Background / History
Shrek Academy began as an unaccredited academy in a small village of the Heaven Dou Empire. In its first twenty years, it admitted only forty-two students, maintained more teachers than students, and depended on aid from Dai Mubai and registration fees to remain open. Its original dean, Flender, established the principle that it would accept “monsters, not ordinary people.” 140 143
The academy's status changed after the first generation of Shrek Seven Monsters achieved prominence at the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Spirit Fighting Tournament. Their success attracted exceptional teachers and students, eventually transforming Shrek into the continent's foremost academy. 140 240
In the present era, Shrek is based at Shrek City on the Lima Plain and is regarded as a central institution of Soul Master society. It has accumulated immense martial strength and political influence while remaining formally independent of the major empires. 20 22 187
Organization
Outer Court
The Outer Court divides students by Martial Soul type and specialization:
| Class | Students |
|---|---|
| Class One | Assault-type and control-type battle Soul Masters |
| Class Two | Defense-type and agility-attack-type battle Soul Masters |
| Class Three | Support-type battle Soul Masters |
| Class Four | Food-type, healing-type, special-attribute battle Soul Masters, and tool Soul Masters |
The academy reportedly admits around one thousand new students each year, though only roughly three hundred remain after the freshman assessment and ultimately graduate. Many graduates remain as academy teachers or join Shrek City's patrol squads. 188
Inner Court
The Inner Court has fewer than sixty disciples. Its students undertake inspection missions through the Shrek Supervisory Group and must complete thirty missions in order to graduate. 149 159
The Supervisory Group is presented as an organization for addressing malicious incidents that local authorities cannot or will not handle, while also providing practical trials for Inner Court students. 149 161
Sea God Pavilion
The Sea God Pavilion is Shrek Academy's highest authority. Mu En serves as its master and makes major rulings concerning discipline, student safety, equipment, and institutional policy. 30 161 200
Admissions and Education
Entrance Requirements
New applicants require a city lord's recommendation letter and must pass an entrance examination. The standard examination places candidates against a ten-year soul beast in the Beast Fighting Zone, where three teachers evaluate their performance. 21
Shrek also conducts bone-age testing to enforce its enrollment age restrictions. 29
Assessment Standards
Shrek's founding maxim is:
“Shrek Academy does not train ordinary people. It only trains monsters.” 131
The academy is willing to alter its assessment standards for unusually strong students. When Xia Linyuan's cultivation exceeded the expected range, the Martial Soul and Soul Guidance Departments jointly raised the maximum age of the assessment spirit beast for the first time in academy history. 127
Facilities and Resources
- Beast Fighting Area — A vast facility containing captive soul beasts and dedicated examination arenas. It covers as much land as the Martial Soul Department's teaching buildings, dormitories, and Shrek Plaza combined. 21 127
- Sea God Lake — Occupies more than half of the academy's grounds. 227
- Sea God Pavilion — The academy's senior governing body and the residence of its highest-ranking elders. 30 161
- Treasure Appreciation Fair — A preferential viewing event through which merchants bring valuable goods to Shrek City for academy members to inspect before public auction. 132 133
- Soul Tool research — Shrek maintains a Soul Guidance Department, but its Outer Court department is smaller than the Martial Soul Department and is criticized for lagging behind the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy in Soul Tool development. 176 227
Shrek is stated to have six thousand permanent Spirit Master members, more than a dozen publicly stationed Title Douluo, and teachers whose weakest members possess Soul King-level cultivation. 129
Shrek Seven Monsters
Every five years, Shrek selects a new generation of Shrek Seven Monsters to commemorate the original seven and represent the academy at the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Spirit Fighting Tournament. 143
Following the tournament victory, the academy offered the winning students the lifelong title of Shrek Seven Monsters. Jiang Nannan, Tang Wulin, Wang Dong, and Ning Tian accepted; Xia Linyuan, Gu Yuena, and Huo Yuhao refused, citing the title's lack of practical benefits and restrictions on publicizing it. 203
Tournament Record
Shrek Academy has claimed nearly every Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Spirit Fighting Tournament championship over the past thousand years. Its reputation alone intimidates opponents and shapes audience expectations. 163
During the current tournament, the official team was severely depleted after an inspection mission, forcing the academy to rely primarily on its reserve team. Despite this, Shrek defeated the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy in the final and was declared champion. 161 177 200
| Event | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Spirit Fighting Tournament | Defeated Heavenly Spirit Advanced Soul Master Academy in the opening round 163 |
| Round-robin stage | Defeated Thousand Spirit Advanced Soul Master Academy through Xia Linyuan's Soul Tool tactics 175 |
| Final | Defeated Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy and won the championship 196 200 |
Controversies and Criticism
Zhou Yi Scandal
Evidence emerged that Outer Court teacher Zhou Yi had pressured students beyond their limits, expelled those who resisted her methods, and abused her authority to improve advancement rates. The disclosures triggered testimony from former students, pressure from affected families, and public unrest across Shrek City. 136
Shrek Academy ultimately revoked Zhou Yi's honors, abolished her cultivation, expelled her from Shrek City, and banned her from returning. 168
Student Safety Failures
Xuan Zi's negligence during an inspection mission led to severe Inner Court casualties: two students died, one was left near death, two were severely injured, and one was crippled. The Sea God Pavilion reprimanded him, ordered compensation for the victims' families, and instituted Soul Tool equipment for Inner Court disciples. 161
An Evil Spirit Master later killed five first-year Outer Court students and displayed their bodies outside the academy gates. The incident became a public humiliation after the attacker escaped pursuit by Shrek's high-ranking members. 183 238
Public Reputation
Shrek's influence and conduct have drawn criticism from several directions:
- It is compared to the ancient Spirit Hall because of its concentration of powerful Soul Masters, alliance with the Tang Sect, and cross-border enforcement activity. 22 187
- Xia Linyuan argues that Shrek's Inner Court promotes itself as a guardian of continental peace while contributing no Soul Masters to the Abyss front line. 149
- The academy's bounty for the Black Pharaoh Apostle—three million Gold Soul Coins plus a soul bone for his head—became a source of ridicule after his repeated escapes and attacks against Shrek personnel. 238
- Shrek's independence from imperial authority causes political concern, particularly because it possesses influence comparable to or exceeding that of major national forces. 186 187 188
