Ch. 221Gecko Moria
Plot points and events
- A Marine warship encounters Gecko Moria’s enormous ship, whose deck is crowded with zombies. Major Hake and his subordinate Ryan panic, assume the creatures come from a Devil Fruit power, and order the Marines to fire.
- Moria, a Shichibukai, initially treats the Marines as an inconvenience and tells his aide Absalom to steer around them. Cannon fire hits his ship, however, and Moria orders Absalom and the zombie soldiers to retaliate.
- Below deck on the Marine ship, Noah hears a refugee woman describe how Marines abducted survivors of pirate attacks and planned to sell them into slavery. Enraged, Noah prepares to investigate when the battle begins, telling the captives to stay hidden.
- Moria’s zombies overwhelm the Marines and capture the warship with few casualties. Absalom brings Major Hake to Moria, who mocks the frightened officer and hints at his hatred of fat men.
Character developments
- Moria appears lazy and emotionally damaged by the loss of his former crew, but his return to his West Blue home has begun to ease his grief. His patience vanishes when his ship is attacked.
- Absalom is devoted to Moria and worries about his master’s recovery. As the only living member of the current crew, he handles much of the ship’s practical work and longs for new crewmates.
- Noah responds with anger and compassion to the refugees’ abuse, reinforcing his sense of justice. He leaves the captives concealed while he goes to confront the disturbance.
- Major Hake is exposed as cowardly and complicit in the Marines’ abuse of refugees.
Themes
- Corruption and false justice: Marines who claim to uphold order are shown trafficking vulnerable civilians, making them morally comparable to criminals.
- Trauma and recovery: Moria’s grief remains, though home and Absalom’s loyalty offer some comfort.
- Power and fear: The zombies’ appearance alone terrifies the Marines, and their panic makes them easy to defeat.
Character interactions
- Absalom serves Moria loyally, reporting the Marine ship and carrying out his orders.
- Noah listens to the refugee woman’s account and offers quiet comfort before the battle interrupts them.
- Moria confronts Hake after the zombies seize the warship, ridiculing him as he stands helplessly captured.
