I did not know what had happened. That disgusting evil devil had not let us witness the horrific ritual. He had merely used sorcery to mark out an area in this field, then concealed his desecration with some kind of wicked light.

O hills, it was too terrifying. I could not describe what I had sensed.

Instructor KuiLiGu was an extraordinary man. While that monster was carrying out its blasphemous ritual, he organized everyone to escape. My elder brother TengTouTai had rarely agreed with FuLa, but this time he did. In his view, rather than be tortured to death beneath that horrifying monster, it was better to return and accept execution—at least then we could die within the hills. My mother, too, said she was willing to stay behind and cover for all of us, giving us the chance to leave at our leisure.

I could not describe the instant I left my mother—what emotions, what resolve had driven me to do such a thing? And what emotions had driven Mother to make that decision?

Indescribable.

It was only deeply unfortunate that whenever we reached the edge of the field, some inexplicable force stopped us from going any farther. In that instant, everyone sank into profound despair. We understood then that no matter what resolve we carried, it was all so laughable before that monster.

Simply because we were too powerless.

When we returned to the field, the monster had already dispelled the strange circle concealing its desecration. It was using some glowing thing to treat one piece of its clothing
