Nature and Origin

Chakra powers the Ninja World's techniques. It is commonly understood as a combination of physical and spiritual energy. Nara Dan later argues that this account is incomplete: in his view, chakra originates from a God Tree “seed” within the body that draws on those energies. He regards it as distinct from the body's own potential for physical development 116 147.

Dan's observations in the Dragon Vein's void energy sea show chakra nodes spread across the Ninja World. He identifies nine exceptionally large nodes as the Tailed Beasts and the smaller nodes as human chakra users. In that vision, the nodes draw from the planet's Natural Energy 186.

Uses and Limitations

• Techniques — Chakra can be shaped and transformed for ninjutsu. Dan forms intricate objects from materialized chakra and later uses Yin-Yang Release in an attack modeled on a Tailed Beast Bomb 33 129.
• Physical enhancement — Opening the Eight Inner Gates increases chakra flow and physical performance. Dan finds that the resulting torrent becomes harder to control and can damage the body; he identifies the fourth gate as directly burning life force 24 25.
• Sage Art — Natural Energy can be combined with chakra. Dan senses that energy after reaching God-Seeing Indestructibility, though he considers controlling it with his Nara body difficult 44.
• Cultivation cost — Dan contends that extracting and cultivating chakra consumes bodily potential. This concern leads him to develop the Way of the Flesh as a separate path, although he continues to find chakra useful 29 147 204.

Chakra-Related Materials and Research

• Chakra Metal — A rare material used to forge weapons that carry chakra. Dan consumes it to strengthen his Copper Head Iron Bone trait and later forges a blade for Kurenai Yuhi from it 2 3 47.
• Chakra Core — A component of Sasori's Human Puppets. Dan finds one in the Third Kazekage puppet and concludes that Gelel Ore lets it house part of a soul while supplying power 88.
• Chakra Information Entity — Orochimaru's name for an information-bearing substance bound to chakra that he identifies while studying Hashirama Senju's cells. Dan suspects such an entity may be involved in limiting the lifespans of Ashura's reincarnations 182.
