Background / History

Kira was Nara Dan's next-door neighbor in the Soul Society dormitories. He repeatedly observed Dan's sword training out of curiosity until Dan's sword aura nearly struck him; frightened, Kira introduced himself and explained his presence. At the time, his chin-length golden hair concealed half of his face, and he had only recently joined Soul Society. 338

Interested in awakening his Zanpakutō, Kira asked to learn from Dan's sword meditation. Dan examined Kira's Asauchi and found that it already possessed a faint, immature spirit, then advised him to develop it through practical battle. Kira's spirit infusion and connection with the Asauchi subsequently accelerated. 339 344

When Renji Abarai attempted to challenge Dan after Rukia's defeat, Kira intervened first. He fought Renji to defend Dan, awakening his Zanpakutō in the middle of their duel. The awakening increased his Spiritual Pressure enough for him to perform Shunpo, allowing him to defeat and incapacitate Renji with the blunt side of his blade. 345

Over the following years, Kira trained alongside Renji under Dan's influence. Although he was a well-rounded Shinigami with no major weakness in Zankensoki, he initially disliked Wabisuke's weapon-weightening ability and often avoided using it. 347 368 376

After being injured while stalling the Hollowfied Renji, Kira sought a way to avoid falling behind.
