Wang De had been admitted to the hospital.
The moment Chen Zhao heard the news, he immediately hired a helicopter and rushed over to see him.
But visitors were actually forbidden.
He could only peer inside from afar through the glass of the special ward.
Wang De lay on the hospital bed wearing nothing but shorts. The skin all over his body had visibly ulcerated, like tofu skin stewed for an hour.
His eyes were swollen like a cartoon frog's.
Chen Zhao frowned and asked the young nurse beside him, "What happened? Did he fall into an acid tank?"
The nurse's eyes brimmed with tears. "Nuclear radiation."
"Nuclear radiation?" Chen Zhao was baffled. "He sits in an office every day. How could he have come into contact with nuclear radiation?"
"A project on controlled nuclear fusion was launched at the experimental base two months ago," the nurse said. "A huge machine malfunctioned. The nuclear core inside became unstable and was about to erupt. Wang De happened to be standing nearby, so he reached in, took out the core, and threw it into the processing pool."
"How could he do something like that?!" Chen Zhao roared, so furious his head spun. He knew how vicious that kind of nuclear core was. Simply getting near it could kill someone, let alone holding it in one's hand.
Wang De was doomed.
The nurse's eyes reddened further. "There were only a few seconds. There wasn't time for any other method. Wang De did it to save the others, and to protect the machine."
Chen Zhao asked, "How much radiation is in his body?"
The nurse gave him a number. "Seven point two roentgens."
Chen Zhao tipped his head back toward the ceiling and let out a heavy sigh. "Good Lord!"
