"Oh, so that one is a young lady. Please forgive my poor eyesight, miss. Why don't you both come up and chat for a while? You don't look like the sort rushing off to handle urgent business."
The scholar smiled, and the latter half of his words seemed to carry a hidden meaning.
Ye Tian glanced at him and was about to turn and leave when one sentence stopped him in his tracks.
"If you leave just like this, I fear you'll be scattered to the winds before you even make it out of the city."
The scholar said this with a smiling face.
"Do you know what those people in black robes are rushing off to do? They're all going to their deaths. Does a single person really think they can survive? Hehehe... How naive."
The man sneered.
"What inside information do you know?"
The scholar froze for a moment, then laughed even louder, as though he had heard some utterly ridiculous joke.
"Oh my, you really are interesting. You dared come running here without knowing anything? I thought you were like them, trying to pick up scraps, but now it seems you're even worse off than they are. When you die, you won't even know why."
Ye Tian's inner heart remained calm, but Hong Ying's expression did not. Unconsciously, she edged a little closer to Ye Tian.
"But since I'm such a kind-hearted person, come up and have a drink with me. I'll tell you the whole story from beginning to end, so at least you can die knowing why."
The scholar smiled as he looked at Ye Tian and Hong Ying.
The two exchanged a glance. Ye Tian said nothing and walked ahead toward the upper floor of the tavern.
Hong Ying followed close behind.
