History

Tang Tian’s Arrival

The Spurs select Tang Tian with the 31st overall pick—the first selection of the second round—in the 2011 NBA Draft. The pick previously belonged to the Timberwolves. San Antonio’s need for a three-and-D player makes the selection particularly welcome among its fans. Tang had not considered the Spurs during his tryouts because they originally lacked a second-round pick 126.

Tang signs alongside fellow rookies Kawhi Leonard and Cory Joseph at the AT&T Center. Buford handles negotiations, while Popovich intervenes when discussions with Tang’s agent, Fagan, reach a stalemate. A later FOX Sports report states that Tang insisted on a two-year contract 148 893.

The team retains most of its established roster rather than pursuing extensive free-agent changes. Tang enters a crowded perimeter rotation containing Manu Ginobili, Danny Green, Gary Neal, Richard Jefferson, Leonard, and Joseph 149 150.

First Championship with Tang Tian

Tang earns a rotation place through training and preseason performances, then advances from reserve duty to starting opportunities. By the latter part of the season, the Spurs use Parker, Tang, Leonard, Diop, and Duncan as their starting five 153 158 164 231.

The Spurs finish with the league’s best record and sweep the defending champion Mavericks in the first round. Their playoff campaign also brings renewed confrontations with the Clippers and a difficult series against the Thunder, whose young core ties the series 2–2 235 255 262.

San Antonio reaches the Finals against Miami. Duncan’s 30 points and 15 rebounds, together with Tang’s late three-pointer, help secure a 101–97 victory in Game 1. The Spurs ultimately win the championship, their fifth title as indicated by Popovich’s subsequent goal of adding a sixth trophy 265 282 309.

The 2012–2013 Title Defense

The Spurs preserve their championship roster, adding Nando De Colo and Aron Baynes. With rivals strengthening, the team relies heavily on internal development. Tang improves his passing to better fit a system described as the league’s best passing team 288 309.

San Antonio finishes the regular season 64–18, setting a new franchise record and taking the top seed. Tang becomes its second-leading scorer at 17.8 points per game. The Spurs sweep Houston in the first round and later deploy a faster three-wing lineup against the Lakers 352 358 363.

The Finals again end in a Spurs–Heat confrontation. In Game 7, Duncan tips in the go-ahead basket with 1.5 seconds remaining, and Tang blocks Ray Allen’s potential game-winning three-pointer. The victory gives San Antonio consecutive championships 381.

Tang’s Departure and the Failed Three-Peat

Popovich and Buford meet Tang during the 2013 free-agency period, but he subsequently leaves for New Orleans. His friendships with the Spurs’ players and coaches survive the departure, although San Antonio crowds boo him when he returns as a Pelican 393 407 429.

Without Tang, the Spurs still reach a third consecutive Finals. They overcome a 3–2 deficit against Memphis in the conference finals, but the series exhausts the roster and leaves Diop injured for the remainder of the season 532.

Miami benefits from tactical information supplied by former Spurs Blair and Neal. Baynes provides an important reserve performance to keep San Antonio alive in Game 5, but the Heat win Game 6 and end the Spurs’ three-peat bid 533.

Transition Beyond the GDP Era

The Spurs acquire Gasol and later reinforce their roster by signing LaMarcus Aldridge to a four-year, $84 million contract. Leonard receives a five-year maximum contract, while Duncan renews for two years with a trade-veto provision 543 691.

Duncan retires before the Rio Olympics. By the beginning of the 2016–2017 season, Ginobili’s age and Parker’s declining role have effectively ended the GDP era. Leonard and Aldridge become the principal core, while the Spurs acquire Bogut to help fill the vacancy left by Duncan 853 879.

Leonard’s injuries subsequently undermine the team. In a later season, he has not played since the opener, and San Antonio falls to eighth in the West at 4–3. Popovich discusses Leonard’s situation with Tang after a decisive loss to New Orleans 1054.

Ownership Change and Veteran Departures

Holt is forced to sell the franchise. Finding a replacement proves difficult because the Spurs’ small market, valuation, and annual profits make the team less attractive to buyers despite its championships. The eventual purchaser, ccx, makes San Antonio the first NBA team owned by a Chinese entity 1102.

The Pelicans later sweep the Spurs in the playoffs. During the final game, Popovich starts Parker and Ginobili together, invoking the team’s earlier championship identity. Ginobili retires after the series, and Parker subsequently joins New Orleans after his Spurs renewal negotiations stall 1113 1114 1164.

Leonard-Led Championship Revival

Paul George joins Leonard and Aldridge in the Spurs’ post-GDP core. Their wing defense becomes a major obstacle for Tang, and San Antonio’s playoff strength earns particular attention when it dominates Houston 1181 1229 1383.

In the 2019–2020 Finals, the Spurs defeat the Bucks 4–1. Leonard leads the championship run and outperforms Antetokounmpo. The victory is San Antonio’s seventh title and its first since Tang’s departure, with Popovich remaining head coach through the franchise’s change of owner and core players 1386.

Playing Style & Tactics

Hammer Play

  • Design: Dribble penetration attracts defenders while off-ball screens create open perimeter shots 159.
  • Purpose: Reduces the offensive burden on an aging Duncan and involves role players more directly 160 356.
  • Primary organizers: Parker and Ginobili possess the driving-and-kicking ability needed to run it effectively 167.
  • Early success: Tang scores the Spurs’ first nine points against Detroit through three consecutive Hammer Play three-pointers 159.
  • Limitation: Ginobili’s injury exposes the lack of experienced alternative organizers. Joseph struggles when tested in that role 167.
  • Later limitation: Tang argues that opponents have learned the play after nearly two seasons, making a faster defensive-counterattack approach more attractive against the Lakers 363.

AI Hammer and Other Set Plays

  • AI Hammer: Produces scoring opportunities through coordinated penetration, screening, and movement into the corners. Parker finds Tang for an open three against Minnesota, while another sequence frees Leonard for a driving layup 193 227.
  • Zip play: Ginobili’s penetration draws the defense inward, allowing Tang to use Diop’s screen and receive a no-look pass for a three-pointer against the Clippers 240.
  • TD.step hammer: Used to open the playoff game against Dallas 231.

Three-Wing Defense

  • Perimeter pressure: Tang, Leonard, and Ginobili combine steals, help defense, and shot contests to disrupt the Clippers, contributing to a 12–0 run 219.
  • Transition suppression: The Spurs’ wing defenders deny outlet opportunities and force the Thunder into organized half-court possessions 257.
  • Faster variation: Parker, Tang, Green, Leonard, and Duncan start together against the Lakers. Apart from Duncan, every starter is under 30, allowing San Antonio to exploit the Lakers’ slower lineup 363.
  • Later evolution: Leonard and George force Tang outward with coordinated wing defense. Playing them at the three and four positions increases their help-defense coverage 1181 1184.

Zone and Matchup Defense

  • 2–3 zone: Protects the paint but concedes perimeter opportunities; Popovich uses it to test Miami’s outside shooting 178 179.
  • Against Memphis: The same formation shuts down inconsistent perimeter offense and helps reverse a 3–2 conference-finals deficit 532.
  • Against Miami’s stars: Finals preparations emphasize individual assignments on James and Wade while limiting the Heat’s role players 262.
  • Interior foundation: Duncan anchors the half-court defense, including a block-and-rebound sequence against Westbrook 257.
