Chapter 10: Inviting a Wolf into the House
"Don't say that yet." Lin Feng stepped forward at that moment, smashing a zombie that had gotten too close to Takagi Saya. "Takagi and Rei, you girls go first. I'll cover the rear." Lin Feng took the initiative to handle the rearguard, letting Takagi board the bus first while he charged toward the others tangled up with the zombies.
Ladies first—a perfectly normal act before the apocalypse.
But now it warmed Takagi Saya's heart. Still, her tsundere mouth said, "What's the point of playing hero at a time like this... When necessary, some people should be abandoned, and you just abandon them..."
A faint smile curled at the corner of Lin Feng's mouth.
After losing Hirano, that simp, Takagi Saya was now more fragile. She couldn't help but latch onto a man she could rely on—and that man clearly wasn't Komuro Takashi, who had made a mess of everything.
Ugh... ugh...
The zombies groaned and roared, chasing them with twisted, deformed gaits.
"Meiling, I'm so scared!"
"Minami, I'm scared too!"
The two girls held hands as they ran toward the parking lot, when a fallen zombie grabbed Minami's arm.
Busujima Saeko saw this, a slight smile flickering on her lips as she raised her wooden sword and charged at the zombie.
Crimson blood stained the ground.
In the blink of an eye, the zombie's head was blown apart by the wooden sword.
And a flush of red appeared on Busujima Saeko's face—the thrill of the kill.
She had practiced kendo since childhood, always needing an imaginary enemy in her mind to make training twice as effective.
Over time, Saeko began to fantasize about what it would feel like to land those moves on a real person. Ever since she beat up that pervert four years ago, Saeko had been hooked on the feeling of using violence, like an addict.
The suppressed addiction of four years erupted today. Four more zombies came at Busujima Saeko from ahead.
Her eyes gleamed with excitement. With a deft flick of her wooden sword, she traced an arc through the air.
In an instant, four zombies were blown apart by the wooden sword!
That had to be the limit of human ability!
Miyamoto Rei watched her senpai go on a killing spree. Gripping her iron rod, she moved toward a zombie whose teacher's badge read "Slanted Board."
"Don't underestimate the spearmanship club!"
Seeing how easily Busujima Saeko killed zombies boosted her confidence. The tip of her iron rod stabbed straight into the Slanted Board zombie's heart.
"I did it!"
It wasn't that hard after all!
Just as Miyamoto Rei was thrilled at killing a zombie herself...
Ugh... ugh...
But the Slanted Board, whose heart she had pierced, was completely unaffected. Its hands suddenly grabbed the rod, as if trying to wrestle it away from Miyamoto Rei!
"No... no way... Its heart, its heart was already pierced!"
The Slanted Board zombie was incredibly strong! In an instant, it turned the tables, using the iron rod to strike Miyamoto Rei in the stomach.
Just as the Slanted Board zombie moved in to bite Miyamoto Rei...
Lin Feng swung his bat and blew apart the Slanted Board zombie beside Miyamoto Rei.
"Rei, to deal with zombies, only a headshot kills them."
Miyamoto Rei winced from the jab of the rod, but still smiled at Lin Feng and said, "Thank you, Lin Feng."
If Lin Feng hadn't taken out the Slanted Board zombie for her, she would definitely have been bitten.
By now, more and more zombies were gathering. Once they swarmed, things would go wrong.
At that moment, every survivor present witnessed Lin Feng's terrifying skill!
He swung his baseball bat with swift, aggressive strides, blowing zombie heads apart with each strike.
Of the dozen or so zombies that came at them, he took out most of them alone.
Facing bloodthirsty zombies, he swung his bat cleanly and decisively, without a trace of fear.
This guy was fierce!
Minami and Meiling were stunned.
Lin Feng put away his baseball bat and said to the two girls, "You okay?"
"Minami!"
"Meiling!"
The two women hugged each other and cried. They had just been on the edge of life and death. But surviving—they owed it to Lin Feng's help.
The group made it to the minibus in the parking lot without further incident.
"This is the brake, this is the gas, and this is the clutch..."
Lin Feng was now in the driver's seat, familiarizing himself with the controls.
Of course, he'd even driven an armored vehicle, let alone a minibus.
Actually, Lin Feng was deliberately dragging his feet, waiting for an important person.
Soon, Komuro Takashi inside the bus spotted a group of students running toward them from outside.
Having been completely upstaged by Lin Feng earlier, Komuro Takashi wanted to show off now. He immediately got off the bus, stood at the door, and waved at the students sprinting for their lives, signaling them to board.
At that moment, Takashi regained his usual composure.
But he never expected that among those dozen or so students lurked a demonic man.
He wore a suit, his frame tall and lean. Though he sported gold-rimmed glasses, he gave off the vibe of a refined scumbag.
"Hurry!"
He was directing the students like a police officer, looking every bit the upright teacher.
This was the man Lin Feng was waiting for—Wisteria Koichi. The culprit behind Miyamoto Rei's grade retention, because Rei's father had been investigating his father Councilor Shido's embezzlement, and Koichi had retaliated by making Rei repeat a year.
Seeing Takashi waving and the school bus ahead, they all ran toward it.
"I can't go on, teacher, I twisted my ankle."
A bespectacled student was running frantically, with several zombies chasing right behind him, closing in fast.
Panicked and unathletic, he tripped and grabbed onto Wisteria's leg.
He was on the verge of tears from fear, the zombies' growls growing louder.
In his eyes, Wisteria Koichi was his hope.
He clung desperately to Wisteria's pant leg.
But at that moment, Wisteria Koichi adjusted his glasses and said coldly, "Is that so? Then you, injured, end here!"
As he spoke, he lifted his foot and stomped hard on the boy's face.
Shattered glass shards pierced the boy's eyes. The searing pain made him let go.
"The old world is over. The weak have no right to live!"
The boy's screams echoed behind him, but Wisteria Koichi just straightened his clothes and ran for the bus.
That was Wisteria Koichi—a beast in human clothing.
A sinister smile curled at the corner of Lin Feng's mouth. He felt that this venomous supporting character, Wisteria Koichi, could help him earn plenty of Affection Points.
Miyamoto Rei, seeing Wisteria running over from inside the bus, immediately shouted at Takashi, "Don't save that bastard! Let him die!"
"Rei, how can you say that?" Takashi looked baffled, not understanding why she hated Teacher Wisteria so much.
He didn't see any problem with letting Wisteria Koichi on board—after all, Wisteria was just a kind, warm-hearted teacher.
That was what Takashi thought, because he hadn't noticed Wisteria kicking away the student who begged him for help. He only saw Wisteria directing the students in an orderly escape, with about a dozen survivors making it.
Takagi Saya, already seated in the bus, was also dissatisfied with Takashi's actions. After their harrowing escape, she had some fondness for Takashi, but that fondness was rapidly eroding under the high-pressure survival of the apocalypse.
Her childhood friend was just too stupid.
Not only Rei opposed letting Wisteria on board, but Saya did too.
Though Saya was a second-year student with little connection to third-year Wisteria Koichi, she had looked into why her rival Rei was held back.
Saya discovered that Rei's grade retention was due to Wisteria Koichi's deliberate sabotage. What's more, Wisteria used his teacher status to coerce and seduce female students.
How could such scum among the faculty deserve saving?
But Takashi let him on board—an act tantamount to inviting a wolf into the fold.
Once Wisteria Koichi entered the bus, he roughly surveyed everyone. Learning there was no leader inside, he started scheming.
"To survive in this chaotic world, a leader is essential! A leader who shoulders everything is essential!"
Everyone who boarded had taken a seat, but Wisteria remained standing, like a crane among chickens. He straightened his back, his upright posture almost giving him an air of teacherly sanctity.
"First, we need to confirm our families' safety... but no matter what we do, we need a leader!"
Wisteria Koichi hadn't sat down since entering. He waved his fingers incessantly, his face alight with excitement, like he was delivering some cult sermon.
"And since you're all students, your judgment may be lacking. So we need an adult as our leader now."
With him being the only teacher here, he began brazenly manipulating these high schoolers, preaching the tenets of the Fujiwara Cult.
Most students were swayed by Wisteria Koichi's words.
But Yuki Kumi, having witnessed Lin Feng's strength, found Wisteria's speech utterly ridiculous. What was this about upholding Fujimi Academy's honor?
The world was ending—what did school honor have to do with her?
"So yeah, teachers are pretty damn boring."
Kumiko's gaze had already drifted entirely toward Lin Feng. She was already fantasizing about how good it would feel to wrap her lips around that thick thing.
Up ahead, Saya had stopped listening to whatever Wisteria was saying. Because everything Wisteria Koichi said was pure brainwashing aimed at the students.
"Busujima-senpai, can't you go shut Wisteria up?" She reached out and lightly poked the shoulder of Dokushima Saeko, who was sitting beside her with her eyes closed in quiet repose.
In Takagi Saya's eyes, Dokushima Saeko was the daughter of the prestigious Busujima family, a renowned kendo lineage. Her swordsmanship was extraordinary—she had won the national tournament in her second year of high school. She was also the captain of the kendo club at Fujimi Academy, now in her third year.
With Saeko's skill, she could easily make Wisteria shut his mouth.
But Saeko's father seemed to have deliberately raised his daughter to be a gentle, virtuous Yamato Nadeshiko.
"This is a time for men to take the lead." Busujima Saeko looked toward Lin Feng instead. Though she had only known him a short while, she believed he wouldn't let Wisteria Koichi do as he pleased.
So she shook her head and said, "We women just need to wait for the outcome."
"Huh?..." Saya clearly couldn't follow Saeko-senpai's logic.
In truth, while Dokushima Saeko was fierce with a blade and ruthless against zombies, she had been raised with Yamato Nadeshiko values. She understood the way of a woman well—unless absolutely necessary, she wouldn't steal a man's chance to shine.
Saya looked at Saeko-senpai, who avoided her gaze, and could only shake her head.
That left only Lin Feng to handle things. As for Komuro Takashi—he was the one who opened the door and let those students on the bus, and brought Wisteria and this huge crisis along with them.
Saya had already given up on her idiot childhood friend doing anything useful.
Just as Wisteria Koichi was loudly spouting his twisted rhetoric, Miyamoto Rei suddenly stood up from her seat and pointed the tip of her iron rod at him. Her action instantly drew the attention of everyone on the bus!
"Wisteria... if you want to be the leader, I will never agree!..."
Too many terrible things had happened today—so terrible that Rei was on the verge of tears again. Now, seeing Wisteria Koichi, her unhealed wounds were torn open once more.
"Rei!" Komuro Takashi finally realized something was wrong.
He also stood up from his seat, but instead of confronting Wisteria Koichi, he reached out and grabbed Rei's iron rod. "Rei, everyone's having a hard time. Put the rod down first..."
