First, two important things.

2. An idea for patching up the protagonist's characterization.

1. Use the Airi incident to introduce Sakayanagi Narimori and have a conversation. He was behind the protagonist's failed attempts to find work, since he had been keeping an eye on him all along.

The protagonist had a certain bottom line, even when he went looking for a chance to shake down some delinquents. (This also echoes the Ichinose theft incident, showing that the protagonist still had some kindness in him.)

After observing—and tormenting—the protagonist for three years, Sakayanagi Narimori sent him an invitation.

2. The protagonist's personality will also get a patch here. Mainly, during the three years after leaving the White House, he had no one to rely on, so he focused on finding a stable life and didn't want to stand out. He also had to work, so his social circle was limited. That's why his personality didn't seem so eccentric. (This explains why the protagonist was a genius but had no money, as well as his personality during his three years of high school.)
