Looking at the three lively, adorable little ones, Lin Jiufeng suppressed the irritation in his heart and said, "If there's anything you don't understand about Cultivation, you can ask me now."
The three little ones each voiced their own confusion in turn.
Lin Jiufeng was an excellent teacher. He guided them step by step, and the three little ones were clever enough to understand as soon as they heard his explanations.
After answering their questions, Lin Jiufeng had them go cultivate on their own.
He, meanwhile, went to read.
The Scripture Pavilion contained every kind of book the Feather Transformation Sect had collected since its founding.
Astronomy and geography, miscellaneous writings and idle talks, principles of Cultivation, cultivation methods and secret manuals, historical biographies...
It had everything.
If Lin Jiufeng wanted to break through to the Sixth Ban within half a year, he needed to keep reading and enrich himself, to see whether he could activate Heaven-Defying Comprehension and gain some different insights.
This was the only way he believed he could break through the Fifth Ban and enter the Sixth Ban within half a year.
And so, Lin Jiufeng began his life of reading.
Other than brief periods of seated meditation and Cultivation each day, he spent all his remaining time reading.
Lin Jiufeng read every book with great care, immersing himself completely in its pages.
But perhaps he had been trying too deliberately. After a month, Lin Jiufeng had read at least several hundred books, yet Heaven-Defying Comprehension had not activated even once.
He had accumulated quite a bit of new knowledge, but it was not enough to help him break through to the Sixth Ban.
One night.
Lin Jiufeng sat quietly in the study.
A bean-sized lamp flame illuminated the book in his hands.
There was no sound in the study except for the soft rustle of Lin Jiufeng turning pages.
Before long, he finished another book.
Lin Jiufeng set it down, rubbed his eyes, and sighed softly. "I was still too eager for quick success, which is why Heaven-Defying Comprehension never activated."
He did not continue reading. He wanted to calm himself down.
Over the past month, he had read like a madman, hoping to activate Heaven-Defying Comprehension and swiftly make a breakthrough.
But looking back on it now, he had simply been far too impatient.
Lin Jiufeng shook his head. He could not keep going like this. He emptied his mind, and his consciousness spread out unconsciously.
Suddenly, Lin Jiufeng sensed a fourth person inside the Scripture Pavilion.
He abruptly sat upright.
There were only Wen Xinyun and the other two in the Scripture Pavilion. Bai Yunfei was still in Secluded Cultivation, so who was this fourth person?
Lin Jiufeng frowned but did not alert the intruder.
Without giving anything away, he concealed his aura and hid in the darkness, sensing the person's appearance.
It was a shifty-eyed man, sneaking around the Scripture Pavilion in silence.
His cultivation was the same as Lin Jiufeng's: a Fifth Ban Nascent Soul Grandmaster.
Yet at the same realm, Lin Jiufeng had discovered him immediately, while the man remained unable to detect Lin Jiufeng.
The gap between their Primordial Spirits was obvious at a glance.
"Now that the Feather Transformation Sect is sealed off by the Supreme Dao Sect, how did this man slip in?" Lin Jiufeng remained expressionless, wanting to learn the man's purpose.
Seeing the vast collection of books in the Scripture Pavilion, the shifty-eyed man's face lit up. He gave a sinister chuckle. "Amitabha, the Bodhisattva has blessed me. I never expected to get in so easily. The Feather Transformation Sect really is finished. There are only five people in the whole sect. That immense aura on the highest peak must be the Feather Transformation Sect's Sect Master."
"I need to be careful and make sure he doesn't discover me. The others are all trash, not worth mentioning."
The shifty-eyed man picked up a Daoist scripture and flipped through it swiftly. When he saw that it was not what he wanted, he put it back and immediately searched for the next one.
As he searched, he muttered to himself.
"Three hundred years ago, Shijia Demon King of the Demonic Sect brought chaos to the Cultivation World. He killed countless experts and beat the Supreme Dao Sect until it trembled in fear. He was incomparably arrogant. In the end, he even attacked the Feather Transformation Sect to seize the Feather Ascension Scripture."
"But no one expected that the Feather Transformation Sect had actually hidden three old Daoists at the Ninth Restriction. The three of them besieged Shijia Demon King, and the battle turned heaven and earth dark. People from the Demonic Sect came attacking one after another, while the Feather Transformation Sect sent all its forces into battle."
"That battle was extraordinarily brutal. Shijia Demon King died in battle, and the Feather Transformation Sect's three Ninth Restriction experts ascended. The remaining disciples suffered catastrophic casualties. Even the Feather Ascension Scripture was shattered into an incomplete state. The Feather Transformation Sect never recovered, while the Supreme Dao Sect reaped the fisherman's profit, rising to power in the chaos and suppressing the Feather Transformation Sect at every turn until it was overwhelmed."
"But what the world does not know is that after Shijia Demon King died in that battle, the Ten Palaces Yama cultivation method he specialized in concealed itself, and so it was treated as an ordinary secret manual and stored in the Feather Transformation Sect's Scripture Pavilion."
"If I had not found the notes Shijia Demon King left behind, this supreme and unyielding Demonic Sect art would probably have remained a pearl buried in dust forever."
The more the shifty-eyed man spoke, the more excited he became. It was as though he could see himself cultivating the Ten Palaces Yama, advancing to the Ninth Restriction, unifying the Demonic Sect, and looking down upon the world.
So excited that he blurted out, "To restore the glory of the Demonic Sect is a duty none of us can refuse!"
Listening from the darkness, Lin Jiufeng fell into thought.
"So he came for the cultivation method of that great demon from three hundred years ago."
"Still, although the Feather Transformation Sect killed Shijia Demon King back then, the price it paid was too terrible. Its upper ranks were practically wiped out, and the New Generation disciples had no choice but to shoulder the burden. With so many matters to handle, the Ten Palaces Yama cultivation method really could have been lost in the Scripture Pavilion."
Lin Jiufeng did not disturb him. He let the shifty-eyed man find it for him.
The shifty-eyed man worked very hard. No one knew how many books the Feather Transformation Sect had collected through the generations. They filled several floors and countless bookshelves. Finding a single secret manual among them was truly like looking for a needle in the sea.
Especially since Lin Jiufeng did not know what the Ten Palaces Yama cultivation method looked like. Since it could conceal itself, it was very likely disguised as an ordinary Daoist scripture.
The shifty-eyed man kept searching tirelessly, refusing to give up.
But even by dawn, he had not found it.
He did not lose heart. Instead, he found a corner to hide in and remained utterly motionless. He neither ate nor drank, lowering his breathing to its faintest trace. If Lin Jiufeng had not been observing him with his consciousness, he would never have noticed that someone was hiding there.
"Perhaps that was how he slipped past the Supreme Dao Sect's blockade and entered the Feather Transformation Sect," Lin Jiufeng murmured.
He pretended not to know and quietly went about his own business.
When night came, Lin Jiufeng and the three children were all cultivating, and the shifty-eyed man set out again.
He continued searching from where he had stopped the previous night.
He worked extremely hard.
One day.
Two days.
Three days.
Until the tenth day.
The shifty-eyed man had turned over more than half of the Scripture Pavilion when, finally, that night, he found the self-concealing Ten Palaces Yama.
Holding the Ten Palaces Yama in his hands, the shifty-eyed man was so excited that tears fell from his eyes. Trembling, he said, "You really made me search long and hard for you."
Lin Jiufeng spoke at that moment. "Thank you for helping me find this secret manual."
The shifty-eyed man swiftly hid the manual behind his back, turned around, and glared furiously at Lin Jiufeng. "When did you discover me?"
"From the very first step you took into the Scripture Pavilion," Lin Jiufeng answered truthfully.
"So while I was working so hard to search all these days, you were hiding behind me and watching?" The shifty-eyed man was beside himself with rage.
"Yes. To thank you for your hard work, I can spare your life," Lin Jiufeng said seriously.
"I won't spare yours!" Rage surged through the shifty-eyed man, impossible to suppress. He charged directly at Lin Jiufeng.
Golden light burst from his palm, carrying a dense aura of metal and iron. It was like a golden saber chopping down at Lin Jiufeng.
The shifty-eyed man was a Fifth Ban expert, so naturally he had his own ultimate technique.
This Golden Saber Palm Technique was the ultimate art he had cultivated painstakingly for half his life.
He was enraged beyond measure. The moment he attacked, he used his ultimate technique. Thinking of how he had been searching so painstakingly these past days while Lin Jiufeng watched from the side made him feel ready to explode.
His eyes were vicious, determined to kill Lin Jiufeng.
Facing this palm strike, Lin Jiufeng did not yield in the slightest. He also struck out with one palm.
Yet his palm bore no light at all. His skin was simply like jade, his fingers long and slender.
The two palms collided.
The Golden Saber Palm Technique surged forward without restraint, carrying an overpowering momentum.
But it met Lin Jiufeng's strength of thirty dragons and thirty elephants.
BOOM!!!
In an instant, the shifty-eyed man's body shuddered as though he had been crushed beneath a mountain. Crack, crack! The tendons and bones throughout his body snapped, his organs shattered, blood filled his features, and his whole body turned into a little red man. He stared at Lin Jiufeng in disbelief.
Lin Jiufeng sighed. "I actually wanted to spare your life."
