These witches were not elite witches who had taken part in the Witch Conflict. Like the sorceresses, they had entered to conduct terrain development and surveys, earning commendations through their exceptional talent for discovering resources—and receiving medals as a result.
As witches unskilled in spellcraft, they naturally found it difficult to deal with the attacks of large numbers of biomimetic golems. Spellcaster units did not have much area-of-effect damage early on; low-magic witches were, at most, versatile generalists. Dealing with these golems, which possessed basic magic resistance, was indeed rather difficult.
