South City's weather was often unpredictable. In late autumn, heavy rain could arrive without warning; only a few minutes might pass between a sparse drizzle and a downpour crashing down in sheets.
The three of them called a car to the fishery, then sat side by side on a leisure bench beneath the awning.
Angelite's long legs rested firmly on the ground, Kraken could barely touch the floor with her tiptoes, and Jiang Han was something else entirely! She swung back and forth in midair like an adorable girl next door.
Watching the endless raindrops strike the hazy surface of Crane Lake, the spreading rain mist rolling and then settling, Jiang Han blankly looked up at the awning, then at Kraken. A moment later, feeling a little chilly, she tossed her hair.
She hugged herself around the chest and, for some reason, felt a burst of warmth. Maybe it was just psychological?
"No, I can't take this. I'm a muggle, an ordinary witch. I'm not like you Sea Sirens—I simply can't experience any happiness or joy from having my body's surface temperature nearly below zero." As Angelite spoke, she drew a twisted symbol in the air with one hand and invoked a spell in an incantation that sounded like Latin spoken backward. "May sunlight ever shine."
Angelite's eyes turned golden. Simply sitting beside her, one could feel a comfortable, sunlike warmth.
Another spell she'd never heard of. Jiang Han curiously examined Angelite, whose body was giving off heat, then turned to look at the rain mist outside. "I want to try it too."
Sea Sirens were merely unafraid of cold and seawater. If it got too cold, they would feel uncomfortable too. Besides, Sea Siren witches were not true Sea Sirens; when one aspect was strengthened, another would be weakened.
