After school on Monday afternoon, the Student Council held its regular meeting as scheduled. It would also be Manabu Horikita's last meeting of this kind.
At the meeting, Manabu Horikita assigned the Student Council's upcoming tasks as usual. At the end, though, he thanked the members present for supporting his work all this time.
Though two of them were first-year newcomers.
After the meeting, Manabu Horikita asked Sawahara to stay behind.
"Kiriyama's been coming to me lately, asking me to recommend him for the next Student Council President election." Manabu Horikita looked at his underclassman. "I turned him down."
If he had agreed, Kiriyama would probably have been removed from that position—or even expelled—before long. He'd let his greed cloud his judgment.
"Oh, looks like Kiriyama's got quite a few little schemes up his sleeve." Sawahara raised an eyebrow. "I hope he puts more of that energy into his studies."
To be honest, Sawahara didn't care much about the position of Student Council President. He wouldn't mind putting someone else in the role.
With the Saint President ruling through inaction, Sawahara could reluctantly exercise the new president's authority on his behalf. But trying to bypass him and become president outright was a different matter. The Student Council was supposed to be an open and inclusive place. They couldn't go forming cliques.
Still, Nagumo was probably behind Kiriyama's move, at least in part. Sawahara recalled the president saying that one of the main reasons he'd recruited Kiriyama was to have him compete against Nagumo...
The promising junior opposed his ideas, while the person he'd brought in to compete against Nagumo was sitting on the fence... The president's eye for people really left a lot to be desired.
