Background

Class D was identified early as the school's lowest-performing first-year class. Its students were described as noisy during the entrance ceremony, and Sawahara inferred that the school’s class divisions reflected ability and behavioral problems after overhearing Class D students being called “defective products” 4.

During its first month, Class D spent its Private Points freely, split into small cliques, and had no clear leader beyond Hirata Yosuke’s informal influence. While the other classes had begun controlling spending and consolidating leadership, Class D had failed to recognize the significance of Class Points and fell to zero 8.

The class’s weak academic foundation repeatedly placed members at risk of expulsion. Before the midterms, Ken Sudo and Kikyo Kushida became embroiled in an accusation of stealing old examination papers from a third-year student, while Ryuen later sold the class purported Version B midterm papers under a contract that claimed its Class Points for the semester 15 20.

Midterm Examination

Class D’s students attempted last-minute studying after learning that poor results could lead to expulsion. Ryuen presented revised exam papers and pressured the class into signing a contract for 100,000 Class Points; the class accepted the offer despite the severe cost 19 20.

Uninhabited Island Exam

Class D entered the island exam with 300 Special Exam Points but struggled heavily, with most students returning to the ship before the conclusion. The class ultimately placed fourth with 69 points 26 29.

Although Horikita Suzune had acted as the public leader, Class D changed its leader to Ayanokoji Kiyotaka. This prevented the expected deduction for having its leader identified, though the class still underperformed 29 30.

Cruise-Ship Thinking Exam

Class D held several VIPs, including Kushida in the Dragon Group, Minami in the Horse Group, and Karuizawa Kei in the Rabbit Group. Sawahara identified the VIP-selection pattern and obtained this information, enabling other classes to exploit Class D’s VIPs 38 39.

The class lost 250 Class Points in the exam but received substantial Private Points through individual contracts. This left many students celebrating their earnings despite the class’s worsening overall position 41.

Paper Shuffle

Class D agreed to receive test questions from Class A in exchange for monthly Private Point payments equal to 2,000 times any bonus Class Points it gained. Horikita feared the agreement was a trap, since it obligated Class A only to provide the questions it submitted—not necessarily questions that would allow Class D to succeed 77 78.

The class’s internal distrust intensified as students blamed Horikita for the deal while refusing to assume responsibility themselves. Hirata, Kushida, and Horikita were eventually selected to negotiate with Class A 77.

Forest School Exam

Class D’s lack of unity became a strategic liability when Classes B and C allied against Class A. Class A refused to meaningfully support Class D, forcing it to form groups under unfavorable conditions 99 100.

The class again finished last. Mori was set to be expelled due to its negative Class Points, and Hirata openly confronted Horikita over her role in the girls’ group’s failure 115 116.

Class Voting Exam

The Class Voting Exam required each student to praise three classmates and reject three others. The student with the most rejection votes would be expelled, while the most-praised student would receive a Protection Point 126.

Class D formed temporary voting blocs and discussed removing unpopular students. Horikita and Yamauchi were considered particularly vulnerable because of their damaged reputations within the class 130.

Selection Event Exam

For the Selection Event Exam, Class D rapidly chose Hirata as its Command Tower. He accepted because he possessed a Protection Point and could protect the class from an additional expulsion if it lost 148.
