First Appearance Chapter 1

Background

Lin An awakens in an abandoned factory amid corpses and armed killers, with no identification and no memory of how he arrived there. He immediately begins seeing a floating Bullet Screen through which remote viewers comment on events, direct him away from threats, and offer gifts. 1 15

Although he uses the name “Lin An” from the beginning of his time in Queens, he later explains that he chose it himself after losing his memories. His lack of official records becomes a major concern: police searches find no trace of him, while Professor Robert Jero begins helping him pursue a legal student identity. 16 35

Lin An eventually presents Robert with a Chinese passport and receives a scholarship from Columbia University, though his missing memories and prior identity remain unresolved. 37 39

Appearance

Lin An is a Chinese young man of slight build, standing approximately 1.7 meters tall. His gentle features, fair complexion, and composed expression can make him appear harmless despite his conduct. 10 11 23

  • Often wears a dark hoodie, jeans, white sneakers, and black-rimmed glasses to resemble an ordinary college student. 32
  • Uses gloves, hats, masks, sunglasses, and tactical gear to conceal his identity during criminal operations. 6 26
  • Has been described as carrying himself with an imposing “arrogant CEO” aura despite not being physically tall. 10
  • Frequently maintains a polite, student-like smile even in violent situations. 26 37

Personality

Lin An is exceptionally calm under immediate threat. Upon waking in the factory, he assesses weapons, terrain, enemy movement, and his own physical condition before acting; he repeatedly favors stealth, ambushes, and repositioning over direct exchanges of fire. 1 2 27

He is practical and unusually indifferent to material possessions, taking only what he needs from looted goods while treating money, weapons, business ventures, and personal connections as resources to be managed carefully. 8 30 45

His violence is calculated rather than emotional. Lin An kills enemies without visible hesitation and regards gang members as having forfeited their humanity through their actions. However, he distinguishes people by conduct rather than affiliation, agreeing to help Old John because of Old John’s past kindness to Darnell’s family. 19 34 41

Lin An is also socially adaptable. He can intimidate opponents through polished manners and status displays, manipulate a mercenary captain into revealing information, and build goodwill with police officers by solving their financial problems. 7 10 24 42
