Ch. 283Mercy

After the ritual at Black Gully, Richard saw the city’s ordinary people forget what they had witnessed and returned home to his family. In the cleanup, Richard and Mrs. McNeil examined the Echo Society’s Anchor Net artifacts, and she revealed she could invite her teacher to help question Mr. Reeve’s echo.

  • Colonel Aude recorded the ritual’s dead and injured, including Wentworth, and told Richard he would report his actions and prioritize him in the spoils distribution.
  • The city’s ordinary people gradually forgot the horrors beneath The Veil, and Mrs. McNeil told Richard that forgetting protected them from what they had seen.
  • Richard visited Mrs. Wells, then returned home and reunited with Evelyn, Margaret, and Rogers.
  • During the cleanup, Mrs. McNeil explained how the Echo Society had twisted the Anchor Net artifacts to guide, bind, and condemn the dead.
  • Mrs. McNeil identified the clay tablet as the ritual’s core and said it needed to be sent to the Manchester General Directorate.
  • Mrs. McNeil explained that she could not channel Mr. Reeve without an Anchor Seal, but she could invite her teacher to do it.

Ch. 284Silent Lockdown

Richard and Mrs. McNeil watched Mrs. Mary summon Mr. Reeve’s residual spirit to learn the long-range Silent Lockdown spellcraft and uncover its connection to the Echo Society. Mrs. Mary repelled the Eyeless Eye, and the chapter ended with Mr. Reeve’s affair officially concluded while the hunt for the Black Soil River Virtuoso continued.

  • Mrs. McNeil arranged thirteen of Mr. Reeve’s anchor cores in the autopsy room, and Mrs. Mary arrived in the form of a black cat.
  • Mrs. Mary summoned Mr. Reeve’s residual spirit, learned that the Echo Society knew of her, and made it demonstrate the spellcraft used to kill the coroner.
  • Mr. Reeve revealed the Silent Lockdown incantation, and Mrs. Mary traced the spellcraft’s pattern for Mrs. McNeil and Richard to study.
  • Mrs. Mary sent Richard and Mrs. McNeil behind layers of barriers before asking Mr. Reeve a final question, which provoked the Eyeless Eye to appear.
  • Mrs. Mary summoned five virtuoso manifestations to drive the Eyeless Eye back beyond The Veil, then warned Richard and Mrs. McNeil that speaking or asking could summon what they knew.
  • Richard and Mrs. McNeil cleaned up the autopsy room, and Mrs. McNeil declared Mr. Reeve’s affair officially concluded while the Black Soil River Virtuoso remained at large.

Ch. 285The Sacred Paperweight and the Scales

Richard received an assisting-scholar commendation, chose two lightly tainted bronze artifacts from the Echo Society’s recovered items, and advanced his reasoning and breathing techniques. He later read the public account of the North District disaster, while the true death toll and events remained concealed.

  • Lieutenant Aude gave Richard the general directorate’s commendation and warned him that registering as an assisting scholar would put him on the wartime conscription roster.
  • At the spoils meeting, Mrs. McNeil explained the dangers of the recovered artifacts, and Richard chose a sacred ibis paperweight and a small bronze scale.
  • Mr. Hutton explained that the artifacts bore the names of Thoth and Maat, so the Echo Society’s virtuoso had altered them only lightly.
  • Richard received twenty pounds and several aether condensates, then unlocked Inner Awakening and found that tide-shift breathing had begun to work on its own.
  • Richard read a newspaper report blaming the disaster on a gas main and canal breach, while the branch office’s register recorded 103 dead and the public continued to debate conflicting memories of the night.

Ch. 286The Forgotten City

Richard attended the funerals for Briston’s dead and learned that the city would be forgotten and spared from the coming war. Before leaving for the Imperial Capital, he taught Coleman Moon Nail and accepted half his savings and a Wild Bull Horn, while Coleman vowed to join him there.

  • Richard attended the burial of the eighty-seven bodies recovered from Black Gully, where Lizzie’s tombstone gained a smiley face and a message from Marie Victoire appeared.
  • At the public servants’ funeral, Richard saw that Wentworth had officially recorded Old Biggs’s death as occurring in the line of duty while investigating the Echo Society case.
  • Mrs. Mary told Richard through a black cat that Briston had lost its value to the Occult Side and would be forgotten during the coming war.
  • Richard visited Coleman and offered to teach him Moon Nail so he could treat his own damaged Circuit after Richard moved to the Imperial Capital.
  • Coleman gave Richard half his savings and a Wild Bull Horn, then promised to come to the Imperial Capital after recovering and reinstating his military commission.

Ch. 287War Has Come

Richard learned that war had broken out across Haimos Island and prepared to return to the Imperial Capital on a military train as the Empire imposed wartime controls. Before leaving, he received notice of another Theogony Salon gathering and said goodbye to Mr. Hutton, while his family packed food and a winged Professor Rabbit for his journey.

  • Richard received an Imperial University telegram moving the semester start to August 20th, then read that a succession crisis after Selenia’s archbishop died had escalated into war across Haimos Island.
  • The Empire issued wartime controls on railways and armament-related industries, while Rogers assured Margaret and Evelyn that their family and Evelyn’s baking academy would remain unaffected for now.
  • A gray-robed messenger delivered Hecate’s letter scheduling the Theogony Salon’s next gathering for August 15th and announcing a new member named Hercules; Richard suspected Ares might be replaced.
  • Gerald booked Richard a seat in a special carriage on a military train for August 10th, and Evelyn baked almond crisps and made him a winged Professor Rabbit for the trip.
  • Richard visited Mr. Hutton, learned that his Probatio text had received the number cl-1914-0011, and was advised to settle at the Ashford Family before returning to Imperial University.

Ch. 288Spice Islands Cultural Exhibition

Richard left Briston for the Imperial Capital, where he found the Ashford household mostly empty because its members had been sent away for wartime duties. At the Albion Museum, he began guiding visitors through the Spice Islands exhibition, explaining its artifacts and the subcontinent’s rigid social order.

  • Richard said goodbye to Margaret and Evelyn, then boarded a special military train carriage after Rogers showed his telegram at the wartime station.
  • Richard arrived in the Imperial Capital and learned from the butler that the Ashford family members had left for Francia, military service, or training.
  • Richard visited the Albion Museum and agreed to help Curator Weatherby explain the newly opened Spice Islands and Southern Continent Cultural Exhibition.
  • Richard described the many-armed goddess, human-skin drum, and skullcap cups to the visitors, explaining their use in rituals.
  • Richard explained that people outside the subcontinent’s four ranks were denied basic rights and were chosen for sacrifices, leaving the crowd silent and a mother to lead her child away.

Ch. 289Blood and Price

Richard absorbed Aether from the museum storeroom’s Curios while Curator Weatherby described ancient human sacrifices and hinted at why powerful Eastern Occult traditions had failed to protect their lands. Weatherby then explained how Richard could purify two tainted bronze artifacts by restoring them to their original purposes.

  • Richard entered the storeroom with Curator Weatherby and slowly gathered Aether from its sealed Curios while asking about human sacrifices.
  • Curator Weatherby told Richard that people had been sacrificed and eaten across distant lands, and that those regions’ Occult Side had been powerful.
  • Richard compared the sacrifices to the Empire’s exploitation of workers and asked why the Eastern lands had fallen to Western fleets.
  • Curator Weatherby began to explain that the Eastern lands’ strength had contributed to their inability to defend their borders, but stopped and told Richard to investigate the question himself.
  • Richard gathered enough Aether to raise his Available Points to 2.09, then showed Weatherby the Sacred Ibis Bronze Paperweight and Small Bronze Scales.
  • Curator Weatherby advised Richard to purify the artifacts by using the paperweight to keep true accounts and the scales to weigh things, restoring their original functions.

Ch. 290Thoth's Weighing (Patron Bonus 6)

Richard worked to restore the Sacred Ibis and scales’ ability to record and weigh things, then met Gray at a café near her new academy. Their conversation turned from city amusements to her family’s struggling spice business, and Gray showed him a paper folder.

  • Richard used Aether Condensate to help the Sacred Ibis remember its duty of keeping accounts and began preparing to restore the two Curios’ weighing ability.
  • Richard adapted to Tide-Shift Breathing, studied at the museum, and received Gray’s invitation to meet at a café.
  • Gray described her academy, movies, aviation shows, and other amusements while chatting with Richard over tea and mille-feuille.
  • Gray explained that wartime restrictions had sharply reduced her family’s spice income, though the old southern route still let them import spices from the East.
  • Gray took a stiff paper folder from her handbag and offered to show Richard something.

Ch. 291Divine Seat Frost Bean

Gray gave Richard a box of rare Divine Seat Frost Beans and offered her family’s Eastern Continent shipping channels, while Lillian preserved a kingfisher and reflected on the losses caused by her rapid ascent. The chapter ended with Lillian taking out a token.

  • Gray showed Richard photographs of Haimos Island and explained that her family had begun transporting goods beyond spices.
  • Gray gave Richard a box of Divine Seat Frost Beans and offered to help him obtain goods from the Eastern Continent through her family’s shipping channels.
  • Gray left Richard pastries flavored with her family’s cardamom, and he enjoyed them after she returned to the academy.
  • Lillian preserved a kingfisher that had struck a telegraph wire and recognized her taxidermy as practice in making living things still.
  • Lillian recalled how Ms. Holloway had drawn her into a path of ascent and noted that she had lost her sense of taste and memories of time with Richard.
  • Lillian completed the kingfisher specimen, then took out a token.

Ch. 292Hercules

Richard previewed the Traceless walking trait and considered its value for avoiding pursuit. At the table, Hecate introduced Hercules, who presented several Evil Being artifacts and described their origins and uses.

  • Richard learned that unlocking Traceless required escaping a sustained pursuit by a stronger tracker without help or stealth Curios.
  • Richard entered the temple and saw Hercules seated in Ares's chair, then Hecate welcomed the newcomer and announced that she had prepared Masks for the group.
  • Hercules showed the table a bone-calcified syringe from a Stitch-Faced Monster born in a ruined textile mill and said it could serve as an Aether-conducting medium.
  • Hercules presented a cervical vertebra and Luminous Gut Thread from a Floating Skull brought back on a spice merchant ship, explaining that the material could be used in medicine or as a catalyst.

Ch. 293High Evil Being

Richard watched Hercules and Demeter demonstrate the powers and costs of their Divine Masks before Hecate introduced four masks for the table. Catherine accepted Nemesis's mask, whose power and compulsive drive toward retribution left the others to consider what the masks would demand of them.

  • Hercules's image showed him destroying a Flagbearer and its horde, but Richard noticed the flag had already been neatly torn and recognized signs that Hera's Jealousy was driving Hercules into blood rage.
  • Hecate asked Demeter to demonstrate production, and Demeter displayed plants and materials she could cultivate, including the Silent Fern Richard had sought, while warning that borrowed harvests were hollow.
  • Hecate presented four Divine Masks and explained that each granted power at a price, with the amount borrowed depending on the wearer's own accumulated understanding.
  • Hecate gave Nemesis the silver-white mask and explained that it granted perception of excess and imbalance but compelled its wearer to repay every debt and avenge every wrong.
  • Catherine put on Nemesis's mask, and her presence became utterly unfamiliar to Richard.

Ch. 294Mask Power

The members of Hecate’s table received divine masks and began trading goods. Richard kept the Hermes mask unwearned for further study, while the exchange continued with Prometheus acquiring a High Evil Being’s core and Dionysus obtaining Soul-Calming Poppy.

  • Hecate explained the powers and prices of the Prometheus, Dionysus, and Hermes masks, and Prometheus and Richard put theirs away instead of wearing them.
  • Dionysus put on the Dionysus mask, accepting its risk of intoxication and loss of control.
  • Hercules displayed salvaged goods from the Flagbearer, including a High Evil Being’s core and several tainted odds and ends.
  • Prometheus traded a bottle of pure Aether Condensate to Hercules for the core, which Hercules wanted to stabilize his surging Aether.
  • Demeter offered seeds, spores, and rhizomes for trade, and Dionysus exchanged a copied Imperial Capital library catalogue for her Soul-Calming Poppy.

Ch. 295The Veil Modernizes

Richard traded for Cursed Objects, a banner fragment, and Silent Fern at the gathering, then heard reports of supernatural disturbances spreading across the Empire. The chapter ended as he prepared to explain which things had become restless since the war began.

  • Richard identified the Cursed Objects and accepted Hercules's pile of contaminated items.
  • Richard traded Moon Nail; Reflection for a piece of Hercules's banner material and exchanged Divine Seat Frost Beans with Demeter for Silent Fern.
  • Dionysus reported that a phonograph recording played a changing woman's voice that had not been present at a séance.
  • Nemesis described abandoned villages and unguarded Weak Points, while Prometheus reported that one prosperous colony's inhabitants all looked the same.
  • Demeter reported hollow grain that drained its consumers and left them vulnerable to Soul-Calling, and Hercules described Evil Beings escorting a living person through the Ash Belt.
  • Richard began reporting that things within the Empire had grown restless since the war began.

Ch. 296Another Salon (Alliance Leader Bonus Chapter 8)

At the Salon, Hecate warned that stolen artifacts were leaking, rival gatherings were consuming one another, and Returning Sleep Rituals were failing. Richard left as the next gathering was set for October, while Lillian awoke at the Hall of False Oaths, where candidates could claim a seat only by killing.

  • Richard reported that seals on artifacts taken from colonies were leaking, and Hecate revealed that rival Salons hunted and absorbed one another.
  • Hecate warned that Returning Sleep Rituals were failing as the dead resisted the Verdict Formula and new technologies could transmit entities from beyond The Veil.
  • Hecate said Ares had left to receive a prosthetic limb, dismissed the Salon, and scheduled its next gathering for mid-October.
  • Lillian awakened at the Hall of False Oaths and saw Loki, Hela, Balder, Fenrir, Tyr, and Freyja occupying its six seats.
  • Lillian remained among the candidates at the edge of the hall and learned that they could claim the seventh seat only by killing.

Ch. 297Bitter Winter

Lillian challenged Balder in the Hall of False Oaths and killed him with her Signature Curio, inheriting the power he had accumulated. Her Divine Name was revealed as Skadi, and she took Balder’s seat, though she could no longer feel warmth.

  • Lillian chose to challenge Balder, intending to exploit the mistletoe weakness in his oath-protected body.
  • Balder attacked Lillian with a beam of light, while Freyja’s witchcraft made him even less inclined to defend himself.
  • Lillian dodged the beam and pierced Balder’s invisible armor with her needle, freezing him in place and killing him.
  • Balder’s head rose into the darkness, and his accumulated power flowed into Lillian, repairing the damage to her foundation.
  • Lillian’s Divine Name appeared as Skadi, goddess of winter and the hunt, and Loki invited her to take Balder’s seat.
  • Lillian sat in the bright seat, unable to feel the cold or warmth, as the seventh phantom chair stood empty again.

Ch. 298Weighing

Richard examined and purified the items he had acquired, but the Hermes mask proved too dangerous to wear, reverse, or study through his shadow. He ended the night with a possible future path toward giving his shadow a core, while setting aside the flag fragment and clay figurine for his aunt and Clara to examine.

  • Richard used Tarot Cards to assess the banner cloth, found trapped thoughts and possible hidden dangers within it, and reinforced its seal.
  • Richard studied the Hermes mask’s powers and costs, but learned he could not reverse it without mastering it and that wearing it weakened him.
  • Richard tested the mask on his shadow, quickly removed it when the shadow began to come apart, and concluded the shadow lacked a core to support the Divine Name.
  • Richard used Runic Stones to learn that having someone else dismantle the mask would bring a horrifying death, then drew Tarot Cards suggesting a shadow core might become possible after future progress.
  • Richard purified the Sacred Ibis Bronze Paperweight and Small Bronze Scales by putting them to work, then weighed Coleman’s Wild Bull Horn and learned it held a single-use Aether Burst.
  • Richard purified Hercules’s bronze bell and broken saber, judged the cracked clay figurine to be unusable, and planned to ask his aunt and Clara about the figurine and flag fragment.

Ch. 299The start of term (bonus chapter for alliance leader 9)

Richard began the new term at Imperial University as war reshaped the city and the Classics Department, where staff debated crash courses and rumors spread of early graduation for wartime scholars. As he studied with Catherine, Montague, and Edith, Edith told him that Lillian seemed changed since their last meeting.

  • Richard arrived at Imperial University and saw wartime notices, recruitment posters, and lecturers arguing over whether to suspend courses for the front.
  • Pendleton told Richard that the Classics Department was considering a simplified crash course for teaching students to build emergency seals, but the plan had not begun.
  • Richard attended the preparatory class's old curriculum, including inscription studies, ritual language, and veil dynamics, while lecturers noted that wartime weak points were worsening.
  • Montague told Richard that two of his hunter relatives had died and warned that rumors of early graduation for wartime scholars suggested the university would soon send out less-prepared students.
  • Richard watched Catherine in class and noticed no change in her behavior, then worked on group assignments with Edith.
  • Edith told Richard that Lillian had seemed polite but looked at her like a specimen when they met again, and Richard said he did not know what had happened to her.

Ch. 300More Than Just Tea?

Richard perfected his Silent Fern Vacuum casting, then discussed the potential of Phillips's Signature teapot before Phillips's fiancée took him home. Richard called his sister Evelyn, listened to news from home, and ended the chapter still troubled by the coming war.

  • Richard used Silent Fern and Tide-Shift Breathing to cast Vacuum without disrupting his aether.
  • Phillips showed Richard his Signature teapot, which could produce any tea he imagined, and Richard suggested it might someday create valuable alchemical liquids.
  • Phillips and Richard agreed that Phillips would give Richard the first bottle if the teapot ever produced an enhancing liquid.
  • Phillips told Richard that Wilkinson had enlisted and expected to return before Christmas, while Richard privately feared the fighting would last much longer.
  • Phillips's Hunter fiancée arrived and dragged him home, leaving Richard to finish his Honey Pomelo Tea alone.
  • Richard called his sister Evelyn, heard her talk about their family and everyday life, and promised to look forward to her pastry.

Ch. 301Angel of Mons

Richard advanced his Silencing Spellcraft practice while helping professors and students compile a Field Quick-Start Seal Manual. Associate Professor Grier showed him a battlefield report describing the Angel of Mons, a mysterious apparition that confused pursuers and helped Albion's retreating troops escape.

  • Richard practiced controlling Silencing Spellcraft and considered how its effects might work under [Shadow Reversal].
  • Associate Professor Croft gathered Richard, Montague, Catherine, Fisher, and other students to help compile a Field Quick-Start Seal Manual led by Professor Wyndham.
  • Richard used his Academy Script knowledge, [Reasoning], and [Erudition] to classify seal diagrams quickly, impressing Hollis with his memory.
  • Richard asked Associate Professor Grier about battlefield requisitions, and Grier explained that newspapers omitted much of the real information.
  • Grier showed Richard a battlefield report about the Battle of Mons and recounted how a strange figure or light confused the pursuers during Albion's retreat, earning the name Angel of Mons.

Ch. 302I Came to Repay a Debt

Richard reviewed reports about battlefield activity awakening buried dead and weakening the Veil, while noticing Catherine’s uncanny talent for spotting imbalance. After he finished her assigned work for her, Catherine brought him a meat pie as repayment, leaving Richard unsure whether the small gesture settled her debt.

  • Grier and Croft explained how battles, siege mortars, telephone lines, and searchlights had activated weak points and prompted new seal requests.
  • Richard recognized that the reports showed how military infrastructure and combat were stirring up supernatural threats across the front.
  • Richard observed that Catherine’s ability to detect redundant strokes and imbalances had grown far beyond her classmates’ abilities, likely because of the Nemesis Mask.
  • When Professor McPhee summoned Catherine, Richard divided her stack of seal drafts with her and quickly finished his share.
  • The next day, Catherine placed a meat pie on Richard’s tray as thanks for helping with her work, and Richard wondered whether it repaid her debt.
