Background / History

Senba Gari's mother, Otonashi Yukine, died in a car accident ten years before he visited her grave with Silver Phantom. Her death, his memories of learning piano with her, and Otonokizaka's connection to her remain central to his attachment to the school. 27 41

During an expedition to temple ruins with his father, Senba Ryo, Gari was trapped among stone-statue monkey monsters. Ryo knocked him unconscious and used a teleportation talisman to send him away, leaving Gari to awaken alone in a forest beside his dead companions. The incident left him burdened by guilt and determined to uncover the ruins' secrets. 22

Months later, while investigating Mlortha activity in Akihabara, Gari protected Arisa Ayase from a lion-type Mlortha despite suffering severe chest wounds. Camus then offered him the power to fight, leading Gari to awaken Garuda and become Kamen Rider Divine. 23 24

Appearance

Gari is a tall, thin young man with messy black hair and deep black eyes. During his early Akihabara investigation, he wore a flaxen baseball cap, a white short-sleeved shirt under a black sleeveless jacket, and dark jeans. 22

  • Often wears a silver-white Bluetooth earpiece for contact with Silver Phantom. 36
  • Carries a long gray cloth bag containing his rune-carved wooden sword and other tools. 22
  • His eyes can shift to scarlet during periods of corruption or possession. 184 203 228
  • A mysterious red smoke temporarily reverted his body to that of a six- or seven-year-old child. 147 148

Personality

Gari is instinctively protective and repeatedly places himself between civilians and monsters, even when injured or unable to transform. He shielded Arisa from the lion Mlortha, defended μ's from hostile knight armors, and confronted Cerberus immediately after enduring the effects of a dangerous healing pill. 23 107 144

His outwardly calm demeanor conceals survivor's guilt, self-doubt, and a fear of failing those around him. Defeats by Muramasa and other enemies leave him questioning his own strength, but he consistently recommits himself to becoming stronger. 38 46 53

As a teacher, Gari can be stern, sarcastic, and black-bellied, particularly when disciplining students or confronting bullies. He nevertheless takes his role seriously, guiding μ's through internal conflicts and intervening when Honoka is mistreated. 74 186 227

He also has a playful side: he teases Eli, joins μ's shopping and barbecue outings, and allows the girls to call him by his given name rather than “Teacher Senba.” 58 116 117

Abilities & Skills

Kamen Rider Divine Transformation

Gari manifests the Beast Soul Driver and inserts Beast Soul cards to materialize Divine's armor. The Driver functions as a “computer processor,” selecting and converting forms based on the inserted card. 24 214

  • Divine Garuda — Fire-red aerial form associated with Garuda. 24
  • Divine Fenrir — Silver-gray wolf-themed combat form. 37
  • Divine Diamond — Orange-yellow ape-themed form used for direct physical power. 40
  • Divine Unicorn — Winged form capable of flight and aerial rescue. 181
  • Transformations consume spiritual power; complete depletion forces his armor to dissipate and can endanger his life. 209
  • Repeated or excessive transformation causes severe backlash, including collapse after defeating Hodenig. 213

Garuda Techniques

In Garuda form, Gari can equip the Flame Feather Blade by scanning its weapon card through the Driver. 32

  • Eagle Eye — Extends his vision to targets up to one kilometer away. 34
  • Uses Silver Phantom's flight form as an aerial mount while transformed. 58
  • The Garuda form was his first awakened Phantom Beast power. 24

Spiritual Energy and Talismans

Before gaining Divine's armor, Gari could channel spiritual energy into weapons and projectiles.

  • Fires deep-blue spirit-energy bullets from his pistol. 23
  • Channels spiritual energy through his wooden sword for melee combat. 23
  • Activates paper talismans to create binding ropes of light; his supply is limited and difficult to replace. 108

Hand-to-Hand Combat and Kendo

Gari is highly capable without armor, combining physical strength, weapon handling, and tactical awareness.

  • Defeated a larger guard with a kick and over-the-shoulder throw during an infiltration. 121
  • Fought reassembling knight armors while unable to transform, using a captured scythe and spiritual energy. 107 108
  • Displays exceptional kendo skill, including stopping an opponent's bamboo sword with one hand and defeating a bully during Otonokizaka's exchange event. 186
  • His father forced him through an intense kendo regimen, causing him to resent the sport despite his talent. 187

Investigation and Analysis

Gari investigates monster incidents alongside Takai Geki and Silver Phantom.

  • Uses Shadow Dog to analyze evidence, including identifying Maki Nishikino's blood from DNA on wood debris. 2
  • Notices small physical clues, such as a bloodstained hole through a landscaped tree. 2
  • Works from Mlortha traces, monster fur, crime scenes, and eyewitness accounts. 31 80

Corruption and Abnormality

Gari is described as an “abnormality” whose suppression is tied to a rainbow-colored gem placed within his heart by Gaia. When its suppression weakens, he experiences soul-level hunger, black aura emission, scarlet eyes, and a monster-like state. 183 184

  • Sin — A manifestation of Gari's sin that can emerge independently and fight through or alongside his body. 183
  • Scarlet-eyed persona — A hostile identity linked to the black Beast Soul Driver and the murders investigated by Takai Geki. 225 228
  • Imagin possession — His unusually high compatibility allows several Imagin to take control of his body, each altering his eyes, hair, behavior, and fighting style. 203 204
  • The black Driver's origin and whether Gari himself committed the scarlet-eyed murders remain unresolved. 228 229

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Beast Soul Driver — Transformation device unsealed from the Stone Belt by Camus and Gaia. 24
  • Beast Soul cards — Cards used for Garuda, Fenrir, Diamond, Unicorn, weapons, and form conversion. 29 214
  • Beast Soul Bracelet — Forbidden amplifier capable of drawing out 100% Beast Soul power for a maximum of three minutes. 143 146
  • Flame Feather Blade — Garuda's card-summoned bladed weapon. 32
  • Wooden sword — Rune-carved weapon used with spiritual energy. 22 23
  • Pistol — Fires spirit-energy bullets. 23
  • Paper talismans — Rare spiritual tools used for binding and escape. 108
  • Motorcycle — Birthday gift from Senba Ryo. 4
  • Black Beast Soul Driver and cards — Corrupted counterparts that appear in his possession during the murder incident. 228
