If the monsters' past assaults had been like tides, then the offensive before Theus now was a massive tsunami.
Fishmen swarmed forward in dense masses, carpeting the ground. The soldiers did not even need to aim—so long as they fired, they could hit at least one enemy, and often a single shot pierced through several. The number of Fishmen had reached such an absurd level.
The arm monsters, nearly three stories tall, also surged forward rapidly. Like enormous balls, they crushed a path through the Fishmen, utterly unconcerned that those beneath them were their own allies.
The Fishmen had gone completely mad. They did not even try to dodge, desperately flooding toward the fortifications.
Muzzle flashes continuously burst from the long firing slits. Rifled muskets did not fire particularly quickly, but Alexei had developed a new firing procedure.
They worked in groups of four: one person fired, while the three behind him specialized in loading. The shooter only needed to aim and pull the trigger, while the loaders focused on reloading with their heads down, unaffected by the battlefield situation and able to work more skillfully and efficiently.
After firing, the shooter immediately set the weapon aside. Someone specifically collected the rifles and sent them to the rear, while the three loaders handed the loaded weapons directly to the front.
The machine-gun emplacements atop the fortress also roared to life. Several intersecting lines of fire immediately stalled the charging Fishmen, and the dense bullets even pushed the battle line back toward the Fishmen.
Theus shifted his view and spotted Ash near a machine-gun emplacement atop the fortress. He stood there, coldly watching below. Relying only on the Faithguard Army's firepower, he had successfully held the line.
More Banshees would soon be arriving to reinforce them.
