Wetware

There were not many people along the way, but quite a few machines capable of moving freely. In Theus's eyes, they had taken on a different meaning.

After the guards at the entrance verified Carter's identity, they let them pass. Carter did not go in with them, however. After bidding Theus and the others farewell, another priest of the [Night Watchers] came to receive them.

"Time is short. The Head of Radiance already understands why you have come, so you may speak with her directly."

"Please lead the way."

To be fair, the Sons of Insomnia's Church was the most spacious of them all. They could walk for ages without seeing a single person.

Yet the number of machines here was no less than in the Mechanical Cathedral. They also lacked the Cathedral's complexity and madness, possessing instead a kind of rational beauty.

But now, seeing these machines filled them with complicated emotions. Every one of them was likely powered by a human brain as its core...

The [Night Watchers] called these human brains [wetware].

The crucial part was that this wetware did not resist in the slightest. On the contrary, every one of them accepted it willingly. It was indescribably bizarre.

That only made Theus want to meet the Head of Radiance even more. What kind of person could have built such a mad world?

Before long, Theus and the others entered a grand hall.

There was only one door behind them. The hall itself was completely empty, with no one else inside. After leading them in, the priest turned and left.

Didn't they say she was waiting for us? Why is this place empty?

Chloe and the others had already begun to stay on guard. Could this be a trap?

Suddenly, a woman's voice came from above them.
