Background / History

Class A begins the school year with 1,000 class points, as do the other three first-year classes; its Class A designation is therefore not permanently secure. Class points determine each student’s monthly private-point income, and the class must retain the highest total to graduate as Class A. 7 11

From its first day, the class faces a potential split between Katsuragi Kohei’s and Sakayanagi Arisu’s factions. Yagami Shizuka knows that, without intervention, the conflict would ultimately cost Class A both factions’ key members. 2

Sakayanagi warns the class not to waste its initial 100,000 private points, explaining that future income depends on individual conduct and class performance. Katsuragi supports her warning, but Sakayanagi challenges him to a contest over who can uncover the school’s rules fastest. 4

Yagami later reveals the S System, the consequences of poor conduct, the possibility of expulsions, and the importance of special exams. He presents the information as the result of Sakayanagi’s leadership, allowing her to gain the class’s trust while he establishes strict discipline policies. 11

Sakayanagi and Katsuragi

• Sakayanagi Arisu — A principal leader whose initial strategy is to use her wager with Katsuragi to push his faction into gathering intelligence and integrating the class. 4 6

Seven Star Gathering

Yagami forms the Seven Star Gathering to unify influential Class A students before their internal rivalry can weaken the class. He describes its name through a chess endgame metaphor: a completed seven-star formation is difficult to break. 24

Class Systems and Policies

Discipline Reporting

Yagami institutes mutual supervision under Sakayanagi’s authority. Classroom offenses such as sleeping, whispering, or using a phone cost the class two points per incident; reporting a violation earns the reporter 8,000 private points. 11

Students with repeated violations are to be tracked and prioritized if a future expulsion becomes unavoidable. The policy is accepted without objection and makes Class A unusually serious and proactive in class. 11 12

Point Pooling

Yagami proposes that, after the first month, students pool their private points for emergencies and special exams, with Sakayanagi safeguarding the funds. The stated purpose is to ensure the class can respond to expenses such as the 20 million points needed to prevent an expulsion. 27

Following the first assessment, the class transfers its collected points to Sakayanagi’s account as agreed. 30

R System

The R System is a secondary reward-and-penalty system intended to make class contribution financially worthwhile. It supplements the school’s S System by rewarding effort and discouraging students from relying on the collective without contributing. 28

For the midterm, the system allocates 200,000 private points in rewards: top-ten students receive 10,000 points, while first, second, and third place receive additional rewards of 50,000, 30,000, and 20,000 respectively. Last place loses 1,000 points. 30
