Background / History

The Xiao Clan is a major family based in Wutan City, though its cultivation foundation is comparatively weak. Its strongest known cultivation method is only Yellow-tier high-grade, and even second-rank medicinal pills are scarce within the clan. Its reputation initially suffers from both Xiao Yan and Fourth Young Master Xiao Xuan being considered cultivation failures at the third stage of Dou Qi. 1 2 37

The clan's elders seek to redirect Xiao Xuan and Xiao Yan into managing clan businesses so that cultivation resources can be concentrated on more promising disciples such as Xiao Ning and Xiao Mei. Clan Head Xiao Zhan rejects this proposal, while Xiao Xuan accepts a clan competition to determine whether he may remain. 2

During the competition, the Grand Elder changes the usual testing format to direct combat, openly placing Xiao Xuan at a disadvantage. Xiao Xuan defeats Xiao Ning despite the latter's eighth-stage Dou Qi cultivation, and Xiao Zhan confirms Xiao Xuan as the winner after stopping the Grand Elder from attacking him. 7 8 9

The clan's internal attitude changes rapidly once Xiao Xuan's concealed strength, alchemy, and outside influence become apparent. Clan disciples who formerly mocked him begin treating him with awe, while the Grand Elder eventually abandons any intention of taking revenge after witnessing the Nalan Clan's deference to Xiao Xuan. 10 13 19 21

Internal Resource Dispute

The clan's elders regard Xiao Xuan and Xiao Yan as burdens on limited resources and push to remove them from cultivation. Xiao Zhan's refusal and Xiao Xuan's challenge to the Grand Elder bring this conflict into the open. 2

Clan Tournament

The Grand Elder institutes a combat-based tournament aimed at eliminating Xiao Xuan. Instead, Xiao Xuan defeats Xiao Ning with overwhelming ease, exposing the elders' miscalculation and securing his place in the clan. 7 8 9

Conflict with the Jia Lie Clan

Jia Lie'ao insults the Xiao Clan and attacks Xiao Xuan in Wutan City's market, resulting in the deaths of Jia Lie'ao and his attendants. Jia Liebi then brings Jia Lie Clan disciples to besiege and insult the Xiao Clan, but Nalan Su kills him while defending Xiao Xuan; the deaths of both patriarch and heir signal the Jia Lie Clan's end. 17 18 20 21

Rise in External Standing

Nalan Jie and Nalan Su personally visit the Xiao Clan to apologize over both Nalan Yanran's annulment and Nalan Su's offense against Xiao Xuan. Later, the Nalan Clan provides high-value cultivation methods, Dou Techniques, and pills in an effort to repair relations with the Xiao Clan. 19 20 37
