Following Her Brother

Suzune grows up admiring Manabu and measuring her accomplishments against his approval. As a child, she rushes to show him award certificates; even while standing on a winners’ podium, she worries that he might not recognize her as the recipient. She eventually follows him to Advanced Nurturing, intending to catch up with him 20 363.

Her entrance examination places her fourth among the first-years, and her interview also goes well. She therefore considers her Class D placement a mistake. Chabashira Sae challenges that assumption by explaining that academic and athletic excellence alone do not justify placement in Class A 35.

Manabu initially urges her to withdraw, claiming that her placement disgraces him. He strikes her during their confrontation, which Kai records before intervening. Privately, Manabu hopes she will leave the school’s harsh environment and stop pursuing his shadow. He subsequently asks Kai to guide and protect her 20 21.

After hearing Manabu’s recorded request, Suzune accepts Kai as the person entrusted with her welfare. She nevertheless rejects his overly familiar nickname and insists that she will act according to her own judgment 22.

Learning to Help Class D

When Class D refuses to purchase information from Class B, Suzune approaches Kai independently. Rather than pay with personal points, she signs a confidentiality agreement and promises to prepare his lunches for three months. She resents discovering that the information exposes an impending defeat she can no longer prevent, but resolves to honor their agreement 31 32.

Her original ambition is to lead Class D to Class A and prove herself to Manabu. Kai points out that this requires classmates willing to listen and cooperate—not merely strong individual results. During the Uninhabited Island Exam, Suzune argues for adequate sanitation while discouraging unnecessary comfort purchases. She also investigates rival classes’ leaders with Kushida Kikyo and Ayanokoji Kiyotaka 105 113.

Her own leader identity is exposed after Ibuki takes her card. Following their confrontation, Kai carries the feverish Suzune out of the rain and arranges with Ayanokoji for her medical withdrawal and a replacement leader, limiting the damage caused by the exposed identity 118 119.

After repeated experiences of Class D’s infighting and shortsighted decisions, Suzune reassesses her goal. She tells Kai that reaching Class A is no longer her only means of proving herself and resolves to do what she can while accepting what she cannot control 136.

Romance and Reconciliation

Suzune’s lunch arrangement with Kai expands to six months in exchange for midterm advice. Their growing closeness develops into a romantic relationship, though she initially describes them to Kushida as “just friends” 52 61 149.

At the Sports Festival, she challenges Manabu’s criticism of her decision to run the relay’s final leg. Rather than becoming angry, he acknowledges her reasoning and recognizes that she has gained trusted companions. Suzune openly identifies Kai as her most important companion 197.

When Kai formally tells Manabu that they are dating, Suzune confirms that she knows about his other girlfriends and does not object. Manabu reluctantly accepts her choice. Suzune continues organizing Class D’s examination preparations. She proposes pairing academically strong and weak students to reduce expulsion risks, then notices capable students apparently struggling with easy quizzes. As her relationships develop, Suzune becomes more tactful, affectionate, and willing to cooperate without losing her competitive edge. Miki finds her harsh but straightforward and sincere.
