Power Progression
The clan has no single power level. These are documented Sharingan advancements and related developments among its members, in chapter order. Techniques used through entrusted eyes are distinguished from personal awakenings. Historical abilities disclosed in later chapters are identified as such rather than treated as new awakenings.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One-Tomoe Sharingan | 2 | Akaseki awakens one tomoe in each eye during an emotional outburst. |
| Two-Tomoe Sharingan | 32 | Akaseki’s left eye advances while his right remains at one tomoe. |
| Two-Tomoe Sharingan | 113 | Akaseki’s Sharingan advances to two tomoe after the mysterious elderly attacker wounds Ranwu, provoking intense emotional turmoil. |
| Mangekyō Sharingan — historical awakenings disclosed | 121 | Jiancheng and Lanyu awakened during the clan’s civil war. Kagami advanced directly from two tomoe after both his parents died. |
| One-Tomoe Sharingan | 207 | Kagami’s son Shengshen awakens one tomoe in each eye after learning of his father’s death; the activation leaves him unconscious and is initially unstable. |
| Sharingan — tomoe count unspecified | 214 219 | Zhenpan’s recent awakening follows the deaths of two clanmate teammates. |
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan | 219 | Akaseki advances one eye after Zhenpan’s death. The clan head treats the advancement as significant, though an unbalanced pair provides only limited gains beyond two tomoe. |
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan | 230 | After Elder Lanyu’s death, Fuyouwen advances both eyes and Caozhen advances one. The clan has gained eight new three-tomoe wielders since entering the war. |
| Balanced Three-Tomoe Sharingan | 261 | Akaseki’s second eye advances, releasing the full increase in his Sharingan power. |
| Initial Susanoo through ordinary Sharingan | 262 266 | Akaseki manifests ribs and an arm without awakening his own Mangekyō. His ordinary ocular power has reached the threshold needed for Susanoo. |
| Entrusted Mangekyō techniques | 277 301 | Chizuru entrusts an eye to Akaseki for repair. He also uses Setsuna’s entrusted Towa eye to foresee the course of battle three seconds ahead; this is not a personal Mangekyō awakening. |
| Restoration of Chizuru’s eyes | 341 | Akaseki repairs and returns both of Chizuru’s eyes, returning her right eye first and later her Kishin eye. |
| First-stage Susanoo through ordinary Sharingan | 345 348 | Akaseki’s Susanoo reaches its first stage while he still has not awakened his own Mangekyō. His ordinary ocular power reaches roughly thirty times a normal three-tomoe user’s upper limit, but prolonged Susanoo combat can still exhaust it. |
| Two-Tomoe Sharingan | 349 | Gongzhi Jiu reports a fallen clansman’s daughter advancing to two tomoe, contrasting her awakened eyes with her father’s advancement to Chūnin without a Sharingan. |
| Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode / Senjutsu-enhanced Sharingan | 374 | Akaseki safely converts about half his chakra into senjutsu chakra. The enhanced Sharingan can perceive chakra pathways in precise detail. Orochimaru’s unstable sage transformation also stabilizes after he invokes the Heavenly Cloud Sword’s power. |
| Swamp Release and Red Lion sage form | 391 | Akaseki reveals his personally developed Swamp Release and displays a Red Lion transformation that he calls “Uchiha Sage Mode.” Neither is established as a general clan inheritance. |
| Second-stage Susanoo | 398 | Akaseki possesses a second-stage Susanoo. Hikari manifests a darker red Susanoo of the same stage, with two arms, a skeletal frame, and defined musculature; her remarks imply that this is not her maximum form. |
| Mangekyō Sharingan and Yachihoko — historical abilities disclosed | 400 | Hikari awakened her Mangekyō after her parents died more than three hundred years earlier. Yachihoko can copy and house other Mangekyō techniques, and the clan leader of her era concentrated the preserved Mangekyō powers in her. |
| Removal of entrusted Mangekyō eyes | 400 | Hikari removes Akaseki’s transplanted Towa and Forked Deity eyes and seals them for safekeeping, claiming they burden his chakra. His weakness nevertheless worsens, and an ongoing chakra drain remains unexplained at that point. |
| Preserved Warring States Mangekyō defense | 425 | Hikari uses an inherited ocular technique whose mist causes penetrating attacks to become “lost” before reaching their protected target. A future Akaseki counters it with a golden arrow that also pierces her Susanoo. |
Background and History
The Uchiha ancestral land lies around the lower Naka River, where Naka Shrine stands. Driven from the Naka Plain roughly three hundred years earlier, the clan spent generations on a northeastern peninsula. Madara and his brother later reclaimed the shrine’s site; peace between the Uchiha and Senju after a major war became the starting point of the ninja-village era 186.
The displacement also interrupted access to Naka Shrine and its stone tablet. According to Chizuru, no Mangekyō Sharingan appeared during that interval until Madara and his brother awakened theirs and reinterpreted the tablet near the end of the Warring States period 270.
Hikari’s return supplies an older perspective on this displacement. More than three hundred years earlier, the clan made her its “nameless weapon” after she awakened the Mangekyō following her parents’ deaths. Her unique technique, Yachihoko, could copy and house other Mangekyō techniques. The clan leader therefore branded her with a Cursed Seal, deprived her of freedom and emotion, and transferred the powers of the clan’s preserved Mangekyō eyes into her. Other major clans formed a coalition against the Uchiha, and the Uzumaki sealed Hikari. Hikari suspects that concentrating so much power in her caused the clan’s strength to collapse when she was removed; this is her explanation for the subsequent defeat, not an independently confirmed cause 400 403.
Akaseki’s account places the clan’s return to the Naka River region fifty or sixty years before the present, through a commission from the Land of Lightning. Approximately twenty years of fighting and sacrifice followed before the clan recovered its ancestral lands and reopened Naka Shrine. The coalition that had originally defeated it allowed the survivors to withdraw rather than risk the further losses an attempt at extermination could cause 400 428.
The clan helped found Konoha with the Senju. Madara, a former clan head, defected after its founding and later attacked the village, but the Uchiha did not follow him. Early clan opinion criticized his conduct and supported Hashirama; later dissatisfaction with the clan’s position made some members more receptive to his legacy 1 2 124.
The Battle of the Naka River was a particular source of early criticism. Madara abandoned other clansmen on the battlefield to save his younger brother, and his subsequent acquisition of the Eternal Mangekyō raised suspicions about his motives and the origin of his new eyes. Later leaders avoided repeatedly invoking this history, allowing Madara to serve as an inspirational symbol for dissatisfied members. Akaseki states that the clan expelled Madara when he defected 124.
A ten-year ideological conflict began shortly after Tobirama became Second. Some Uchiha opposed him and began venerating Madara. The resulting civil war killed many skilled members, while use of forbidden eye techniques left others blind. Although the fighting ended, grievances about Tobirama and the clan’s status persisted 121 126.
Setsuna Uchiha was a central instigator of the civil war. He became a jōnin at thirteen, reached three tomoe at fourteen, and ignited the conflict at fifteen. Although officially regarded as having been executed at twenty-five, he survived; Chizuru had reformed him using Izanami. Akaseki’s parents also died during the conflict, though he does not know which faction they supported 225.
The clan largely stopped discussing the civil war after its suppression. Many blinded elders retired from ordinary gatherings and appeared only at major festival assemblies; Chizuru was especially respected among them 126 225.
The clan’s historical knowledge is uneven. Its ordinary Sharingan inheritance remains extensive, but centuries without Mangekyō users, the erasure of Mangekyō records, and Madara’s departure leave modern users with little advanced experience to inherit. Hikari regards the contemporary clan as still incompletely recovered from its ancient decline. Akaseki’s explanation to her also contains deliberate bias: he blames Madara’s family branch for earlier abuses while admitting to himself that he does not know whether that branch actually ruled three hundred years earlier 122 400.
The Uchiha claim direct descent from the Sage of Six Paths and recognize Indra as their progenitor. Their broader claim to legitimacy is not universally accepted: outsiders recognize Indra’s connection to the Sharingan without necessarily accepting an “Uchiha” surname for either him or the Sage 240.
During the Warring States period, the Uchiha were among the powerful clans able to claim a connection to Ninshū, alongside the Senju, Hyūga, and Kaguya 64.
Abilities and Clan Practices
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the Uchiha’s inherited eye technique. Awakening and evolution are closely associated with intense emotion, but many ordinary clansmen never awaken it at all 8 9 29.
- Combat and learning — It improves dynamic vision, supports genjutsu, and allows users to copy suitable ninjutsu and movements. Higher tomoe levels permit more demanding techniques 8 9.
- Eye inclinations — The clan distinguishes Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and rarer Enhancement Eyes. Their differences are relatively small at the tomoe stage but become more pronounced at the Mangekyō stage 8 9.
- Mangekyō Sharingan — Kept secret from most clansmen because its awakening is tied to severe emotional harm and its use damages the eyes. It is not treated as routine combat power 9 121 266.
- Collective genjutsu — Three Uchiha using Sharingan genjutsu together suppress Roshi’s connection to the Four-Tails enough to prevent full transformation, but cannot fully control him 323.
- Standardized cultivation — The clan has a mature training process that supplies newly awakened users with suitable ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu within roughly a month. Awakening also rapidly raises insufficient chakra reserves toward Chūnin level, although chakra control and physical conditioning still require practice 8.
- Awakening through cultivation — Strong emotional stimulation is not the only contributing factor. Developing sufficient chakra can promote awakening, and members who independently reach jōnin-level strength generally awaken their eyes 9.
- Paired eyes — Initial awakening affects both eyes, but later evolution can occur in only one. Chizuru associates single-eye advancement with an insufficient foundation overcome by exceptionally strong emotional stimulation. A balanced pair gives the best overall performance 219 271.
- Sealing aptitude — Three-tomoe users can copy some simple sealing techniques, and the Sharingan’s genjutsu has particular effectiveness against Tailed Beasts 222.
- Rinnegan distinction — The Sage of Six Paths explains that the Rinnegan is not a Sharingan advancement. Its emergence depends on the power of the Six Paths obtained through the combination of Indra’s and Ashura’s reincarnated chakra 241.
- Historical Mangekyō classifications — More than ninety percent of the clan’s recorded Mangekyō eyes have curved tomoe, associated with Ninjutsu or Genjutsu Eyes. Straight-tomoe Enhancement Eyes are much rarer; Madara is the most recent example identified in the clan’s early instruction to Akaseki 9.
- Combined-eye techniques — Chizuru explains that sufficiently deep understanding of Mangekyō techniques can produce a further technique requiring both eyes to work together 271.
- Genjutsu suppression of evolution — The future massacre demonstrates that witnessing bereavement does not guarantee an awakening: a skilled Uchiha genjutsu user can prevent victims from awakening or evolving their eyes even as their loved ones die 428.
Mangekyō power is distinct from ordinary Sharingan ocular power. Activating it consumes a finite reserve that does not recover normally; increasing its limit causes irreversible damage to eyesight. Consequently, users generally retain three-tomoe eyes for routine combat and reserve Mangekyō techniques for emergencies 266.
Konoha initially confirms only Kagami as a Mangekyō user, while Jiancheng and Lanyu remain suspected users who do not deliberately reveal their abilities. By the Sky Ninja operation, Jiancheng’s accumulated eye damage has reduced his static vision below that of an ordinary jōnin, despite the Sharingan’s other advantages 9 279.
During the war, Jiancheng shares Mangekyō information with three-tomoe users such as Gongzhi Jiu. This broader instruction does not make awakening routine: Akaseki remains without a personal Mangekyō even after developing first-stage Susanoo and undergoing repeated emotionally intense Immersion experiences 345.
Inherited Techniques
- Copied ninjutsu — The clan passes down a broad repertoire through successive Sharingan users copying techniques from one another. Techniques that depend on rare elemental talent and three-tomoe users are vulnerable to being lost if their holders die 10 221.
- Uchiha Style Taijutsu — A system built around Sharingan dynamic vision, particularly parrying or dodging before counterattacking. Copying its movements does not replace physical practice 10.
- Fire Style training — Nearly every clan member has Fire Style chakra. Advanced training can use emotionally stimulated Sharingan power to influence chakra transformation, though the method consumes substantial ocular power and is less systematic than basic instruction 8 19.
- Forbidden techniques — The clan preserves Izanagi and Izanami, powerful techniques taught to Akaseki with warnings about their price. Excessive forbidden-technique use contributed to blindness during the civil war 121 221.
- Mirror Clone — Kagami’s modification of the Shadow Clone Technique creates mirrored clones that split when struck. Only a few clansmen can learn it; it allows Kagami to contend with powerful opponents without routinely using his Mangekyō 125 291.
- Emotion-based Fire Style refinements — Clan experience associates anger with higher temperature, sorrow with resistance to extinguishing, happiness with faster spread, and joy with greater range. Repeated emotional agitation can harm the mind, limiting the method’s use 19.
- Imitation Uchiha Gunbai — Hashirama made sixteen sets of Wood Release replicas as compensation for lost clan equipment. Six remained when Akaseki received one. These defensive-counterattack weapons are allocated chiefly to taijutsu users and complement Mirror Clone tactics 129.
- Chakra testing and naming — The clan can sensitively test chakra natures immediately after birth. Some members receive elemental names corresponding to the results 8.
The copied repertoire is substantially larger than the clan’s written scroll collection because many techniques must be transmitted through direct copying rather than reconstructed into instructional scrolls. The collection is not uniformly useful: redundant techniques are discarded, and Orochimaru initially knows useful techniques the clan has not copied. Teaching them to Akaseki adds them to the clan’s accumulated repertoire 10 155.
The most fragile inheritance concerns advanced Water and Earth Style techniques, each of which depends on only two or three suitably talented three-tomoe users. Non-Fire and non-Lightning inheritances have suffered interruptions before. Jiancheng therefore regards Akaseki’s all-attribute chakra and three-tomoe copying ability as an opportunity to preserve the entire library; Akaseki later completes copying the clan’s Water Style and three-tomoe Earth Style techniques 221 230.
The clan also preserves information about techniques that a particular member cannot yet use. Before facing Kirigakure opponents in the Chūnin Exams, Akaseki studies the clan’s ninjutsu records and recognizes obscure Water Style attacks despite lacking the necessary Water Style transformation at that time 143.
Shadow Clones can carry ordinary Sharingan ocular power, but their recovery creates a risk: accumulated visual fatigue returns to the original when the clones disperse and can damage the eyes. The clan therefore normally avoids letting its Shadow Clones recover ocular power. Such clones cannot carry Mangekyō ocular power and consequently cannot use techniques that depend on that reserve 266.
Susanoo
Susanoo was historically regarded as exclusive to Mangekyō users. Akaseki demonstrates that ordinary Sharingan power can activate it when ocular power reaches roughly ten times the maximum of an ordinary three-tomoe user. His initial manifestation consists of ribs and an arm rather than a complete advanced form 262 266.
- Progressive forms — Chizuru explains that advancement depends on ocular power, with successive stages requiring a threefold increase 271.
- Mixed-eye trade-off — A Ninjutsu Eye and a Genjutsu Eye can provide two additional spiritual weapons, but their exclusive Mangekyō techniques tend to coordinate poorly. Before Susanoo’s second stage, mixed eyes are generally inferior to a matching specialization 9 271.
- Enhancement Eyes — These can strengthen Susanoo but do not provide the same exclusive dōjutsu as Ninjutsu or Genjutsu Eyes 271.
- Limited reproducibility — Chizuru does not consider Akaseki’s ordinary-eye method attainable through normal training alone. Earlier Mangekyō users already cultivated their ordinary ocular power without discovering the same result 270.
- Clone application — Akaseki later equips Mirror Clones with Susanoo-enhanced attacks during the Kannabi Bridge assault, overcoming conventional Earth Style defenses and bee-based restraint techniques 323.
Akaseki hoped his discovery would let other clansmen obtain a reusable Susanoo without consuming finite Mangekyō power. Chizuru’s assessment leaves that prospect uncertain rather than establishing a new standard clan training method 270.
Chizuru further specifies that an Enhancement Eye can produce a Susanoo one stage higher for the same ocular power and expenditure, while offering greater resistance to Mangekyō side effects. The first stage is considered the threshold of a mature, broadly usable Susanoo, closing the initial form’s rib gaps and providing both arms 271 291.
Jiancheng sees Akaseki’s reusable Susanoo as a potential replacement for the decisive conventional strength lost with Kagami. Although Jiancheng, Lanyu, and Kagami could compete at roughly similar levels when using their Mangekyō reserves, Kagami’s Mirror Clones made him stronger in ordinary combat. Jiancheng consequently distinguishes Akaseki’s development from Mangekyō power held chiefly as an emergency deterrent 291.
Akaseki reaches the first stage without a personal Mangekyō. Even with ordinary ocular power approximately thirty times a typical three-tomoe user’s upper limit, nearly an hour of fighting Roshi brings his reserve close to exhaustion; renewable power does not eliminate Susanoo’s substantial combat cost. By his encounter with Hikari, his Susanoo has reached the second stage 345 348 398.
Hikari demonstrates a darker red second-stage Susanoo and treats that level as basic. Her comments suggest that she can use a higher form, but the encounter does not establish her maximum stage 398.
Eye Restoration
Akaseki offers to repair Chizuru’s damaged eyes. She accepts on the condition of secrecy and asks him to prioritize her left eye, whose Mangekyō technique, Forked Deity, allows her to see possible future paths and choose one 277.
He also uses Setsuna’s entrusted Towa eye, which predicts the course of battle three seconds ahead. Its predictive assistance makes repeated Substitution Techniques exceptionally effective, but it remains constrained by the eye’s finite Mangekyō reserve 301.
Both of Chizuru’s eyes are eventually repaired and returned. This is a demonstrated individual restoration ability, not a generally available clan technique 341.
After Hikari’s release, Akaseki is again carrying transplanted Towa and Forked Deity eyes. Hikari renders him unconscious, removes them, and seals them for safekeeping, explaining that they burden his chakra. Akaseki discovers that he feels weaker after their removal and that something continues draining his chakra; the episode does not confirm that the transplanted eyes were the sole cause of his condition 400.
Sage Mode
Akaseki obtains permission to undertake a Ryūchi Cave trial with companions and uses the opportunity to enlist Orochimaru’s assistance in strengthening his body. Physical readiness remains a prerequisite even after Akaseki’s bloodline enhancements 291 306.
Tagorihime observes that the Uchiha are unusually well suited to Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode. With his Sharingan and Eight Gates Brain Domain, Akaseki safely converts approximately half his chakra into senjutsu chakra. Senjutsu produces an unusually strong interaction with his eyes, enabling precise perception of chakra pathways beyond the ordinary Sharingan’s vague perception of chakra flow 374.
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode also provides heightened senses, extraordinary regeneration, and access to Senjutsu-Inorganic Reincarnation. Akaseki calls it the clan’s Sage Mode and later announces “Uchiha Sage Mode” while transforming into a Red Lion, but Tagorihime explicitly identifies its source as Ryūchi Cave, and Ranwu questions his presentation of borrowed power as clan inheritance 374 391.
Hikari’s Preserved Mangekyō Techniques
Yachihoko allows Hikari to copy and house other Mangekyō ocular techniques. Her ancient clan leader used this ability to consolidate the clan’s preserved Mangekyō powers in her, making her an unusually extensive repository of abilities that the modern Uchiha have largely lost. This is Hikari’s individual Mangekyō power rather than a standard Sharingan copying ability 400.
One preserved technique originated with a Warring States Uchiha whose clan faced grave danger. Its protective mist makes attacks that enter it become “lost,” preventing them from reaching the protected target. During Hikari’s battle with a future Akaseki, his golden arrow penetrates the mist and her Susanoo, demonstrating that the technique’s description as “absolute defense” does not make it invulnerable to every opposing power 425.
Organization and Village Role
- Military Police Force — Most Uchiha enter the force after reaching Chūnin. Its village-management duties shape clan teaching that protecting the village matters more than completing missions for their own sake 4 21.
- Naka Shrine meetings — Regular meetings introduce young members, report strength breakthroughs, and address political matters. Members generally avoid directly congratulating a Sharingan awakening because it often follows grief or rage 29.
- Clan leadership — Clan Head Jiancheng directs political and military decisions. Elders including Lanyu and Kagami train younger members and advise on clan affairs 8 29 207. Jiancheng, Lanyu, and Kagami are known as the “Three Treasures of Uchiha”; Kagami and Lanyu subsequently die during the war 6 207 230.
- Succession — The clan has no fixed main-family and branch-family division; its clan-head line has changed repeatedly 130. It has also abandoned hereditary shared name characters because junior branches repeatedly supplanted the leading branch during the Warring States period 391.
- Other obligations — The clan maintains a long-term private mission guarding the imprisoned Chinoike Clan at Hell Valley, outside Konoha’s mission accounts 186.
- Support for promising members — Ordinary clansmen must still work for their livelihoods, but recognized prospects receive additional resources. The clan allocates three hundred thousand ryō for Akaseki’s ninja tools when he begins Shurikenjutsu Manipulation and later increases his allowance 30 146.
- Family and battlefield placement — Unlike Konoha’s usual separation of close relatives, Uchiha are commonly assigned alongside relatives or intimate partners. This supports cooperation in manageable battles and can turn bereavement into intensified resistance in desperate situations 349.
- Police income — The force raids gambling establishments that admit ninja, returns Tsunade’s borrowed money to its owners, and retains the remaining confiscated proceeds as lawful income 360.
- Medical personnel — The clan has hardly any medical ninja when it assembles the urgent mission team after Sakumo’s failed expedition. Ranwu volunteers to fill this gap 443.
- Orochimaru’s elder standing — By the Sakumo controversy, Orochimaru is described as an influential clan elder. His status gives Obito a more secure place within the clan, although other Uchiha children still mock his position as a married-in husband 440.
The Military Police Force’s institutional separation contributes to the clan’s isolation. Members also resent the loss of earlier police authority to the Anbu and view Root’s creation as another secret organization encroaching on their position 29 341.
Akaseki advocates broader village integration. When discussing a plan for Konoha to subcontract Land of Wind missions to Sunagakure, he warns Jiancheng not to direct all resulting benefits into the Uchiha-controlled police force. He also suggests employing non-Uchiha ninja there, provoking Yangyong’s opposition; Jiancheng ends the immediate dispute without establishing that the reform has been implemented 291.
Formal village rank does not always match the clan’s combat strength. At one point it has more than ten jōnin but, after Kagami’s death, only Jiancheng holds Elite Jōnin rank. Yangyong and other experienced three-tomoe users possess qualifying strength but lack sufficient records, making additional Elite Jōnin appointments politically valuable 330.
After the Senju Clan’s disappearance, the Uchiha are described as Konoha’s strongest clan. This does not make them its largest ninja population: the Hyūga still have more ninja 361.
The clan’s police-centered career path is already established when Akaseki graduates. Hiruzen places him under Jiraiya before the clan can direct his training entirely through its own instructor and internal promotion route. This intervention helps explain why Akaseki’s mission experience differs from that of most contemporary Uchiha 3.
Following Wangjie Chouzhen’s suicide, Hiruzen treats the police force’s conduct as improper execution of oversight duties rather than formally declaring it a malicious clan attack. Jiancheng promises to standardize review procedures further; the context does not yet demonstrate the completed reform 440.
Major Arcs
Tension with Konoha’s leadership
The Uchiha hoped Kagami might eventually become Hokage and reacted angrily when Tobirama instead named Hiruzen Sarutobi as his successor. Despite their initial dissatisfaction, the clan and other major clans ultimately supported Hiruzen, helping preserve Konoha’s unity after the Uzumaki Clan’s destruction 1 42.
Distrust sharpened when Jiancheng’s request for information about Danzō’s secret organization was refused. In a later confrontation involving Root, the clan pressured the Hokage, arrested four Root members, and tortured them to death. Akaseki opposed the outcome but could not change the leadership’s decision; Hiruzen regarded the killings as an attack on fellow Konoha ninja 29 90 91.
The clan refused appeals even from the families of Root operatives who belonged to other ninja clans. The killings created a deterrent but damaged the reputations of both the Uchiha and Root. Danzō subsequently sought to remove Akaseki from Team 7 as part of a policy of isolating the Uchiha, while Ranwu’s defense helped preserve Hiruzen’s distinction between Akaseki and the clan’s leadership 91.
Kagami represents a more cooperative current within the clan, expressing trust in Hiruzen and Danzō despite other members’ hostility. Following another Root controversy, Akaseki proposes transferring selected Root operatives to the Anbu under Kagami’s command; Hiruzen freezes Root’s missions and transfers selected personnel to the Anbu 92 146.
Danzō repeatedly treats Akaseki’s success as evidence of danger, including his popular Chūnin Exam performance, his actions in Kumogakure, and his return from Sunagakure. Hiruzen rejects proposals to surrender him to Kumogakure or place him under Root investigation, instead promoting him to jōnin and publicizing his achievements 143 193 268.
After Akaseki returns from fighting the Third Mizukage, Hiruzen publicly counters the dying Mizukage’s false account that Konoha betrayed him. This further strengthens Akaseki’s reputation and reflects Hiruzen’s recognition of him as a figure with substantial influence rather than merely a promising young ninja 403.
Wartime losses
Following Kagami’s death, Jiancheng ordered eligible Uchiha into three-to-five-person combat squads while keeping members under sixteen off the front line. Police duties were reduced for training. The clan’s casualties later exceeded Konoha’s overall rate proportionally, threatening its pool of experienced Sharingan users and the techniques they preserved 207 219 221.
Lanyu deliberately draws out Shengshen’s happy memories of Kagami before revealing the death and urging revenge, provoking the seven-year-old’s Sharingan awakening. The episode illustrates the leadership’s willingness to transform bereavement into clan strength even at considerable psychological cost 207.
Within four months, the clan loses more than a dozen members. Jiancheng attributes the disproportionate losses partly to lack of recent external-war experience and excessive fearlessness. Zhenpan’s death and Akaseki’s ensuing three-tomoe advancement expose the contrast between individual grief and leadership calculations about the clan’s net strength 219 221.
Akaseki visits Zhenpan’s widow, Ruyi, and his mother after the battle, conveys Zhenpan’s wish to name his son Obito, and promises to help teach the child about the Sharingan and shinobi life. Ruyi later insists on volunteering for the battlefield despite having given birth only about a year earlier and despite her mother-in-law’s objections 219 308.
Lanyu’s death in the Yugakure conflict produces further advancements in Fuyouwen and Caozhen, who seek revenge against the Jashin Cult. Akaseki also becomes one of the principal Konoha representatives assisting Yugakure’s establishment 230 232.
The clan’s sacrifices limit support for claims that it is merely profiting from the war. Mitokado Homura acknowledges its exceptional casualties, while Danzō emphasizes its increased numbers of Chūnin and jōnin as a reason for suspicion 247 256.
Sky Ninja countermeasures
The Uchiha volunteer for the Sky Ninja Village mission and request Akaseki’s participation. Hiruzen assigns Anbu Elephant and Root operative Yakushi Nonō to accompany him, combining operational trust with surveillance 277.
The Special Countermeasure Force includes six Uchiha jōnin with three-tomoe eyes. All except Jiancheng can target flying Sky Ninja from extreme distances with genjutsu; Jiancheng’s damaged vision limits this role. Danzō instructs Nonō to monitor Akaseki and the clan head, while Hiruzen’s Anbu presence also restrains Root 279 284.
The clan’s intervention ruins Sunagakure’s prospective partnership with the Sky Ninja. Sunagakure nevertheless obtains glider designs or related information and develops its own adaptations, whose use remains limited without a Sky City to supply launching altitude 399.
Kannabi Bridge assault
Orochimaru assigns Torifu Akimichi three Uchiha jōnin and more than a dozen Chūnin for a coordinated surprise attack on Kannabi Bridge. The Uchiha are intended to suppress Iwagakure’s jinchūriki before full transformation, with Torifu providing direct restraint if necessary. Root also observes the operation to assess whether ordinary Uchiha can influence Tailed Beasts without Kagami’s exceptional abilities 318.
Akaseki wins approval for an underground opening attack by demonstrating Mud-Stealth, a combination of Hidden Fish and Hidden Mist that interferes with underground detection and dōjutsu. Yangyong and Gongzhi Jiu initially object to his personal confrontation with Roshi, showing concern for his safety and future importance 322.
During the assault, Akaseki’s clones engage Roshi’s accompanying jōnin while his real body closes with the jinchūriki. Akaseki, Yangyong, and Gongzhi Jiu jointly use Sharingan genjutsu to block Roshi’s full Four-Tails transformation, though they cannot completely control him 323.
Integration, alliances, and Orochimaru’s affiliation
War service gradually improves the clan’s reputation as more Uchiha fight alongside other Konoha ninja. Their arrogance and interference remain irritating to teammates and commanders, but their refusal to retreat from danger earns recognition. Akaseki sees expanded supervision missions as a means of sustaining these cross-clan contacts after the war and reducing police-related isolation 341.
Concern over wartime losses also encourages Jiancheng to consider recruiting powerful outsiders through marriage. Akaseki uses access to the Ryūchi Cave trial as an incentive for Orochimaru, securing his help with physical preparation while raising the possibility of marriage into the clan. Both understand that such an alliance could strengthen the Uchiha while increasing Hiruzen’s wariness 291 306.
Orochimaru subsequently joins the Uchiha and is addressed as Uchiha Orochimaru. He spends substantial time in the compound and later appears as Obito’s nominal father, with Akaseki anticipating that Obito will benefit from Orochimaru, the clan inheritance, and Minato’s promised instruction 359 361 366 384.
The arrangement becomes public when Orochimaru visits the compound on December 21 and sells his previous home and moves in the following day. Akaseki explains the nominal fatherhood arrangement to Obito’s grandmother beforehand. She accepts it out of concern for Obito’s future but remains wary of Orochimaru’s cold reputation. His effective marriage into the clan alarms the village because he had been considered a possible successor to Hiruzen 359.
As an Uchiha, Orochimaru helps direct Tsunade’s medical-ninja training initiative toward the Yamanaka. Jiancheng exchanges friendly words with Nara and Akimichi representatives after the meeting, prompting Danzō to complain that the Uchiha are building alliances with Ino-Shika-Cho. Hiruzen approves the practical training trial rather than accepting Danzō’s interpretation 361.
Jiancheng and Orochimaru first advocate selecting ninja who already possess combat ability and medical aptitude. Orochimaru’s deliberately ambiguous remarks initially make the Hyūga believe that their members are the intended recruits, exposing tensions over the Caged Bird system before he turns the discussion to the prepared Yamanaka proposal 359 360 361.
After Dan Katō is forced out of combat, Orochimaru is assigned command of a separate southeastern Land of Wind theater. He becomes the first Uchiha to hold a First-Level Unit Captain post, marking a major increase in the clan’s representation within Konoha’s military command 365.
Hikari’s return
After Hikari’s release, Akaseki recounts the clan’s intervening history and asks her to return with him and help take control of the Uchiha. Hikari does not accept the proposal. Having been treated as a weapon by her own clansmen, she first wants to examine the changed shinobi world and decide what it should become. Her assistance in combat therefore does not establish allegiance to the contemporary clan 398 399 400.
Akaseki later brings her to Chizuru and explains privately that she is the woman sealed by the Uzumaki more than three hundred years earlier. He limits disclosure because her identity could create trouble for both her and the Uchiha. Chizuru believes him and offers Hikari the identity of her honorary granddaughter, allowing her to move around Konoha without demanding clan loyalty. Hikari gives no explicit verbal acceptance or refusal; Akaseki interprets her silence as consent 403.
Accounts of a future massacre
Visitors from the future reveal an account in which the Uchiha have been massacred. Sasuke describes a secluded compound surrounded by sealing techniques before the attack and attributes the slaughter to Uchiha Itachi with an accomplice. This is information about the visitors’ future, not a massacre that has occurred to the present clan 416 417.
Akaseki, Minato, and Ranwu identify serious inconsistencies in the account. The present compound is peripheral but not secluded, the Uchiha normally undertake some outside missions, and their Hell Valley obligation should keep at least some members away. The reported absence of outside intervention and the coincidence of the clan being gathered together lead Akaseki to suspect a traitor within Konoha; this remains his deduction rather than a confirmed identification of the responsible village actors 417.
The later explanation emphasizes that an Uchiha perpetrator skilled in genjutsu could prevent the victims’ grief from producing new Sharingan awakenings or evolutions. A future Akaseki also activates the Eye of the Moon as a precaution against such an awakening, particularly Sasuke developing a Mangekyō 428.
Sakumo controversy and the clan’s counterattack
The Uchiha initially contribute to the public campaign against Hatake Sakumo after he abandons a mission to save his teammates. His failure disrupts negotiations with Sunagakure and the proposed mission-outsourcing strategy, from which the clan expects substantial benefits. Akaseki also suspects that some of the hostility is intended to suppress Sakumo politically 437.
Orochimaru sends Uchiha Jie to Akaseki at Rōran with a scroll. Akaseki interprets the arrangement as an invitation to stop the clan’s agitation. He tells Jie that Danzō is exploiting the scandal and reframes the doctrine of “the mission above all” as an attack on the Uchiha’s police-centered village role. Alarmed by this argument, Jie returns to Konoha to warn the leadership 437.
The clan abruptly changes sides and turns its criticism toward Wangjie Chouzhen, a jōnin who publicly condemned and disowned Sakumo. Wangjie subsequently dies by suicide. Witnesses report police-force members verbally abusing him outside his home beforehand. Jiancheng rejects responsibility for the death and describes their visit as legitimate questioning, while Hiruzen criticizes the force’s handling and demands reflection. Jiancheng accepts the official-duty framing, promises procedural standardization, and redirects the discussion toward the groups still attacking Sakumo 440.
Danzō is frustrated by the reversal because Root had only amplified a controversy the Uchiha themselves helped initiate. Meanwhile, the conflict reaches the Academy: Uchiha children are among those bullying Kakashi over his father, but Obito sides with Kakashi and condemns their contempt for comrades’ bonds. The other children respond by mocking Orochimaru’s married-in status, and Kakashi and Obito begin fighting groups of classmates together 440.
Akaseki visits the despondent Sakumo with his companions and challenges his belief that he alone bears responsibility. Sakumo still intends to stop being a ninja, but Akaseki’s blunt provocation helps interrupt his suicidal thoughts 440.
Uchiha-led urgent mission
After Sakumo’s failed expedition, Hiruzen approves Jiancheng’s request for the Uchiha to lead the urgent mission. The clan treats the operation as an opportunity to demonstrate its competence and reputation. Jiancheng selects six Uchiha, while Hiruzen assigns three additional Konoha personnel to complete the nine-person team 443.
| Member | Role |
|---|---|
| Yangyong Uchiha | Captain; formal leader of the squad 443 |
| Akaseki Uchiha | Vice-captain; expected by both senior leaders to exercise substantial practical influence 443 |
| Gongzhi Jiu Uchiha | Senior Uchiha member 443 |
| Jie Uchiha | Young Uchiha member 443 |
| Yang Uchiha | Young Uchiha member 443 |
| Yuchi Jiong Uchiha | Young Uchiha member 443 |
| Ranwu | Volunteer medical ninja, compensating for the clan’s shortage 443 |
| Yakushi Nonō | Root operative responsible for earlier reconnaissance 443 |
| Kamizuki Kongyun | Jōnin familiar with the route from the previous expedition 443 |
The Uchiha distrust Danzō’s motives for attaching a Root operative. Yangyong challenges Nonō’s report on the sealing specialists Miroku and Yomi, but accepts her assessment after Ranwu supports it. Akaseki acts as an intermediary with Kongyun and discusses the operation with him rather than leaving him entirely outside the clan’s deliberations. The team prepares to depart that night, with Kakashi arriving at the gate carrying a scroll whose contents have not yet been disclosed at the end of the chapter 443.
Relationships
- Senju Clan — Former battlefield opponents and fellow founders of Konoha; Tobirama’s leadership remained a source of Uchiha grievance 1 186. Hashirama also supplied imitation gunbai as compensation for lost clan equipment 129.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Initially a disputed successor, later supported by the clan during a period of village instability; subsequent conflicts over Root renewed tensions 29 42 91. He repeatedly defends Akaseki against Danzō’s accusations and later permits initiatives that improve the clan’s village connections 193 219 268 361. He counters the Third Mizukage’s accusations against Akaseki, reprimands the police force after Wangjie’s death, and approves the later Uchiha-led mission 403 440 443.
- Shimura Danzō and Root — Objects of deep clan suspicion. Root’s secrecy and confrontations with Uchiha members escalated into the deaths of four Root operatives 29 91. Danzō later uses mission observers to investigate the clan’s intentions and Tailed Beast suppression abilities, and objects to its improving relations with other clans 284 318 361. The Sakumo controversy becomes another contest over public blame, and the Uchiha remain suspicious of Nonō’s assignment to their urgent mission 437 440 443.
- Madara Uchiha — Former clan head and Konoha co-founder who defected. The clan’s view of him shifted from condemnation toward a more favorable memory among some dissatisfied members 1 124. His survival is a concern precisely because sympathetic clan members might misjudge him; Akaseki instead treats him as an external enemy and later fights him directly 122 124 301.
- Akaseki Uchiha — A young Sharingan user trained through clan inheritance despite serving on Jiraiya’s team rather than following the usual police route 3 10 29. His broad chakra aptitude makes him important to preserving the technique library, while his advice promotes institutional integration and recruitment of outside talent 221 291 306. He unsuccessfully solicits Hikari’s help in taking control of the clan, redirects its position in the Sakumo controversy, and becomes vice-captain of its urgent mission team 400 437 443.
- Orochimaru — Initially an outside instructor and collaborator, later an Uchiha member and Obito’s nominal father. His affiliation strengthens the clan’s political and military standing, culminating in its first First-Level Unit Captain appointment 306 359 361 365 384. By the Sakumo controversy he is an influential clan elder, and Akaseki interprets his dispatch of Jie as an indirect request to curb the clan’s agitation 437 440.
- Hyūga Clan — A rival dōjutsu clan whose fixed main-branch hierarchy contrasts with the Uchiha’s changing leadership. The Hyūga use Uchiha infighting to justify the Caged Bird system, while the Uchiha hold that system in contempt. Uchiha prominence also undermines Jisuke’s efforts to establish Hyūga superiority 360 361.
- Yamanaka, Nara, and Akimichi Clans — Increasingly cooperative partners. Torifu leads the Uchiha-Akimichi assault force, while Orochimaru’s involvement in Yamanaka medical training creates further opportunities for cross-clan goodwill 318 323 361.
- Uzumaki Clan — Former allies of Konoha whose destruction helped persuade the Uchiha to support Hiruzen and preserve village unity. Akaseki initiates a visit to honor their ruined homeland 42. The Uzumaki also sealed Hikari more than three hundred years earlier; her later return does not establish a present clan conflict with them 403.
- Chizuru Uchiha — Respected retired elder who reformed Setsuna with Izanami, advises Akaseki on Susanoo, and entrusts him with repairing her eyes 126 225 270 277 341. She offers Hikari an honorary-granddaughter identity without requiring allegiance to the clan 403.
- Hikari Uchiha — Ancient Mangekyō user exploited and controlled by the clan as its “nameless weapon,” then sealed for over three hundred years. She retains knowledge and techniques largely lost to the modern Uchiha, but refuses to commit to Akaseki’s proposed clan takeover and remains wary of belonging to it. Chizuru offers her practical protection and an identity in Konoha 398 400 403.
- Hatake Sakumo — Initially targeted by clan criticism after a mission failure disrupted its economic and political interests. The leadership later reverses its position, while Akaseki personally challenges Sakumo’s despair 437 440.
- Obito Uchiha and Kakashi Hatake — Obito is Zhenpan’s son and later gains Orochimaru as a nominal father. He sides with Kakashi against classmates mocking Sakumo, including other Uchiha children, and the two defend one another in repeated fights 219 359 440.
- Yakushi Nonō — Root operative previously assigned to accompany and observe the Uchiha during the Sky Ninja operation. She later supplies reconnaissance for the Uchiha-led urgent mission, facing Yangyong’s hostility while receiving Ranwu’s support 277 284 443.
- Black Zetsu — Akaseki grants him the Uchiha name after accepting his fabricated claim to be Indra’s will. This personal recognition does not establish formal clan acceptance; Black Zetsu is actually Kaguya’s will and later cooperates with Madara against Akaseki 298 301.
- Ryūchi Cave — Source of Akaseki’s sage training opportunity and later training for both him and Orochimaru. Tagorihime recognizes the Uchiha’s unusual compatibility with its Sage Mode but corrects Akaseki’s attempts to label it an exclusively Uchiha power 291 374.
