Mr. Yao's expression revealed neither joy nor sorrow as he quietly watched the torrential rain outside the window.
He had little talent for cultivation, but his mind was exceptionally sharp, and he had plenty of tricks up his sleeve.
The figure beside him bowed and flattered him. "Mr. Yao, brilliant—this move is truly brilliant. I am in awe. This is Drive the Tiger to Devour the Wolf, using the Wolf Head Mercenary Group to deal with that mysterious youth. But Mr. Yao, it's hard to say whether you want that youth dead or want the Wolf Head Mercenary Group wiped out."
Dressed in white, Mr. Yao said with a smile, "Hahaha, it doesn't matter. Either way, we won't lose out. If that kid can really wipe out the Wolf Head Mercenary Group, then we'll get to enjoy the shade beneath a great tree too. Hahahahaha."
The Magic Beast Mountain Range was vast. Even its outer regions had not been fully explored, much less its depths.
From afar, the mountains were lush and green, thick forests carpeting their slopes. Peaks surrounded one another like city walls, and no one knew what wondrous things and creatures lay hidden within.
No one knew just how vast it truly was. Many Magic Beasts that had never even been heard of in the outside world lived there.
Within the Magic Beast Mountain Range.
Xiao Yi Xian and Gu Fengchen made their way forward through the darkness.
The forest was dim and eerie, its ground blanketed in scattered fallen leaves. Every step sank downward as though they were walking through mud.
It was Gu Fengchen's first time entering the legendary Magic Beast Mountain Range, and everything felt novel to him. Still, he merely observed calmly and did not ask random questions.
He felt that he still had much to learn. At least in certain areas, he needed to learn from Xiao Yi Xian.
Rain fell in curtains from the sky. Xiao Yi Xian vigilantly watched their surroundings while also keeping her guard up around Gu Fengchen.
Although an expert was protecting them this time, she and Gu Fengchen were not particularly familiar with one another. There was no telling whether he might abandon her when danger arose.
Gu Fengchen did not feel much displeasure at Xiao Yi Xian's actions.
Though they had already shared physical intimacy, they had known each other only briefly. While Gu Fengchen understood Xiao Yi Xian very well, she knew very little about him. It was perfectly normal for her to be somewhat guarded.
Gu Fengchen subtly kept Xiao Yi Xian behind him. The long saber on his back was exceedingly sharp and would be a deadly weapon in close combat. The dagger was naturally useful as well; in narrow terrain with no room to maneuver, it was a fang capable of killing an enemy.
Gu Fengchen's gaze continually swept over the dark recesses among the surrounding trees, his hand tightly gripping his dagger as he remained ready for any sudden situation.
It had to be said, climbing mountains was actually quite exhausting.
The rolling hills and steadily rising elevation both drained one's stamina.
In truth, Gu Fengchen did not recognize many of the plants here. Xiao Yi Xian, however, carefully told him which things could be used as medicinal herbs and which were poisonous.
Along the way, Gu Fengchen suddenly spotted a flourishing cluster of fruit trees.
Their fruits were nothing remarkable, but their long, curved stems were rather eye-catching.
Xiao Yi Xian said that these fruit stems were delicious, sweet and sour, and could also be used to make wine.
After they had gone only a short distance, Xiao Yi Xian began to pant slightly.
Gu Fengchen smiled and asked, "How much farther until we arrive?"
"Soon."
The night wind was somewhat chilly. At that moment, Xiao Yi Xian suddenly said, "At night, the outer region of the Magic Beast Mountain Range is home to a creature called the Beast Spider. They rest by day and emerge at night, and they especially love rainy weather. There are countless Tier 1 ones, but Tier 2 Beast Spiders occasionally appear as well."
These Beast Spiders were incredibly fast. Their eight long legs possessed tremendous piercing power and carried potent venom, while their most terrifying weapon was their webs.
Based on Xiao Yi Xian's description, Gu Fengchen thought, This Beast Spider spits webs like it's spitting saliva. Other spiders have to weave a web strand by strand, but this Beast Spider can directly spray out an entire web!
Moreover, the webs spat out by Tier 2 Beast Spiders were not only instantaneous but also enormous. Under normal circumstances, they were difficult to evade, making them extremely troublesome opponents in dense forests.
After hearing this, Gu Fengchen frowned slightly. He had never heard of Beast Spiders in the Original Work, but a Tier 2 Magic Beast was equivalent to a Dou Shi-level Magic Beast. Gu Fengchen had only just advanced to Dou Shi, so he was somewhat wary.
As Gu Fengchen walked, he soon realized something was wrong. One massive spiderweb after another appeared before him.
The webs tangled together, and several of them still held a few cocoons.
Just as Xiao Yi Xian finished speaking, Gu Fengchen's pupils contracted slightly. The stench of death was so intense that he sensed danger.
In the next instant, Gu Fengchen's feet jolted as he twisted aside, narrowly dodging an attack from a dark shadow.
The shadow was incredibly fast, and its immense impact smashed a deep crater into the ground.
Gu Fengchen and Xiao Yi Xian both took half a step back, watching the dark shadow warily.
Within the thick dust, an enormous black silhouette appeared and disappeared.
It was a gigantic spider.
Viewed from above, this giant Beast Spider measured more than three meters across and stood roughly three meters tall. Its eight spear-like legs were over three meters long, and the claws at the ends of its appendages resembled guillotine blades, gleaming with a cold metallic sheen.
Even from far away, Gu Fengchen could sense the sharpness of those blades. Every step the spider took pierced soundlessly into the ground, showing just how sharp they were.
Its grayish-white chitinous shell was covered in dense fur, its entire body encased in gleaming gray-white armor.
Its black eyes resembled dark gemstones. No emotion could be seen within them, yet they sent endless shivers through Gu Fengchen.
The row of compound eyes atop its enormous fangs made anyone who saw them shudder. Its furry long legs were covered in barbs capable of easily tearing flesh apart. In short, as this was Gu Fengchen's first direct encounter with a Magic Beast, he felt somewhat physically uncomfortable.
"It's a Beast Spider, and a Tier 2 Beast Spider at that," Xiao Yi Xian said gravely.
Even without Xiao Yi Xian telling him, Gu Fengchen could identify the creature before them.
The enormous Beast Spider did not attack immediately. Instead, it coldly watched the two humans opposite it.
It was as if that earth-shattering attack just now had been nothing more than a dream of Gu Fengchen's. Yet the crater in the ground and the dust striking his face reminded him of the opponent's power.
What made Gu Fengchen feel somewhat sick was that he had an instinctive aversion to arthropods.
Back on Earth, things like centipedes and spiders were small, yet they still made Gu Fengchen feel disgusted on instinct.
Even crabs and lobsters were sometimes hard for Gu Fengchen to handle.
Unless they were peeled crab roe and shrimp meat, which he could barely accept.
But now was clearly not the time to dwell on such things. He should be thinking about how to deal with the beast before him!
