Cleveland Cavaliers Bench:
"Su, that was really well played."
As soon as Su Yi returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers bench, Coach Mike Brown walked over with a beaming smile, patting Su Yi on the shoulder as he praised him.
"But shouldn't you be a bit less hasty with those three-pointers on the defensive transition?"
Still, Coach Mike Brown offered a slight reminder. In his view, whether it was a defensive fast break or a transition attack, driving into the paint for a layup was always the safest option.
What kind of player just pulls up for a three-pointer right in the defender's face like Su Yi had just done?
Su Yi naturally disagreed with Coach Mike Brown's take, but he nodded anyway.
Silently adding to himself: You say what you say, I'll play my game!
Seeing Su Yi so obedient, Coach Mike Brown felt his sense of achievement swelling.
This was a feeling he hadn't experienced in over a year since joining the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Because the team's core, LeBron James, never listened to his direction.
In truth, Coach Mike Brown was just a puppet.
The real helmsman of the team had always been LeBron James.
Soon, his teammates, including LeBron James, showered Su Yi with praise.
Even LeBron James found himself liking Su Yi more and more with each look. It was as if he saw a super star teammate right in front of him.
He believed that with Su Yi's help, he would go much further this year—maybe even contend for the championship!
The brief timeout ended, and the San Antonio Spurs subbed their starters back in early.
Once the starters returned, the San Antonio Spurs immediately broke their scoring drought and put points on the board.
But with Su Yi standing as an outside artillery piece for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the overall spacing was excellent.
Add to that Su Yi's constant off-ball movement, drawing the San Antonio Spurs' defense toward him like a magnet.
This created plenty of shooting space for his teammates.
The Cleveland Cavaliers' bench players started scoring one after another.
For a while, the San Antonio Spurs' starters and the Cleveland Cavaliers' bench players traded blows evenly.
After half a quarter, the Cleveland Cavaliers still held a double-digit lead.
"Coach, I want to go in!"
(Coach, I want to pad my stats.)
Seeing the team in a commanding position, LeBron James spoke up immediately.
Faced with GM LeBron's request, Coach Mike Brown quickly subbed LeBron James in.
As soon as LeBron James stepped on the court, he seized control of the ball and took shots whenever he had the chance.
Whether it was because the situation was so favorable, most of LeBron James' shots found the net.
The final half of the quarter turned into a one-man show for LeBron James.
LeBron James: I'll pad, I'll pad some more.
"BEEP BEEP."
With the sound of the buzzer, the game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the San Antonio Spurs came to an end.
The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the San Antonio Spurs 102-94, an 8-point victory.
LeBron James had a "god-like" performance, shooting 14-of-30 from the field, 1-of-3 from three-point range, and 6-of-11 from the free-throw line, racking up a game-high 35 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, and 4 turnovers.
After the game, media reporters swarmed around LeBron James for interviews.
Su Yi didn't mind at all and quietly headed toward the tunnel leading out of the arena.
But just as Su Yi took a step, Popovich's voice came from behind: "Su!"
Su Yi: ??
Su Yi looked puzzled as Popovich walked up to him.
Popovich first congratulated and praised Su Yi, then gave him a hug, leaning in to whisper in his ear: "Su, any interest in coming to the Spurs?"
Hearing this, Su Yi froze for a moment. Go to the San Antonio Spurs?
Popovich let go of Su Yi and, seeing him stunned, patted him on the shoulder. "Think it over carefully."
With that, Popovich headed toward the player tunnel.
Once inside the tunnel, Popovich immediately pulled out his phone and called the team's general manager, instructing him to initiate a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
After just one game, Popovich had a very high opinion of Su Yi's potential.
He had only given Su Yi a heads-up just now.
Whether Su Yi agreed or not, he'd trade for him first.
And Su Yi, snapping out of his daze, didn't know whether to be happy or sad!
Either way, staying with the Cleveland Cavaliers or going to the San Antonio Spurs was fine by Su Yi.
Staying in Cleveland meant he could naturally take what belonged to LeBron James.
As for going to San Antonio, he could get far away from LeBron James and even ride along for a championship with the Spurs—why not?
But staying or leaving wasn't his call. He was just a rookie who had played two games.
Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager's Office:
Chris Grant was a bit surprised to receive a call from the San Antonio Spurs' general manager, but what the man said next left him even more stunned.
The San Antonio Spurs were offering Beno Udrih plus a first-round pick in the 2007 draft for Su Yi!
Chris Grant didn't agree right away.
He knew very well that the San Antonio Spurs had a sharp eye for the draft.
The Spurs' current Big Three—Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili—had all been drafted.
According to the LeBron Stans, this was called "rookie collusion."
After hanging up, Chris Grant immediately called a management meeting, even requiring Mike Brown to attend.
Once everyone was gathered, Chris Grant laid out the situation just as it happened.
As soon as he finished, Coach Mike Brown was the first to speak up: "I disagree. Su has too much potential. He might be the final piece we need to contend for a championship!"
Right after Coach Mike Brown spoke, another member of management added, "I've watched both games. Su played a huge role in both. He was the one who led the team to pull ahead."
Then everyone voiced their opinions one by one.
The majority were against it.
So the minority yielded to the majority, and the trade was PASSED.
That meant Su Yi would stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Su Yi didn't know about any of this yet. He just went home and mentioned to Xu Rui that he might be traded to the San Antonio Spurs.
Xu Rui's first reaction was, "Then I'll hurry up and buy a house in San Antonio!"
Su Yi:  ̄□ ̄||
"A Rui, it's just a possibility."
Su Yi quickly explained.
"A possibility means there's a chance. I'll scope it out first. If the trade comes through, we'll buy immediately and move right in!"
Xu Rui liked to plan ahead.
Seeing this, Su Yi didn't argue further. Instead, he asked, "Rui, did you find everyone on the list I gave you last time?"
"Found them all. I followed the script you gave me and talked to each one. Before I could even say anything else, they all agreed right away.
But they said they want to meet you in person. When do you have time to see them?"
Hearing Xu Rui's words, Su Yi's lips curled into a slight smile. "Probably next week. I'm flying to Charlotte soon."
