Background / History
Pursuit of Manabu Horikita
Suzune is Manabu Horikita's younger sister. Growing up under expectations that she should match her highly accomplished brother, she devoted herself to studying, rejected social activities, and focused on earning his recognition. Manabu's continued distance and insistence that she leave the school only intensified her need to prove herself. 35 122
Class D Placement and Leadership
The revelation that Class D had zero Class Points deeply unsettled Suzune, who believed her academic ability made her placement a mistake. She directly challenged Sae Chabashira, who explained that Suzune's excellence was personal and did not benefit the people around her. 75 84 85
Rather than accept the assessment, Suzune resolved to raise Class D to Class A. She became the class's leader, appointing Kiyotaka Ayanokouji as her assistant despite his reluctance; Kei Karuizawa declined involvement from the outset. 85
Midterm Study Groups
As class president, Suzune organized daily study sessions, divided willing students into groups, compiled review materials and incorrect-answer collections, and created worksheets tailored to students' weak points. Her efforts improved Class D's study atmosphere, but Hiro Ikechi, Haruki Yamauchi, and Ken Sudou initially refused to participate. 101 102 110
Her harsh treatment of the struggling students alienated them further. After deciding they would be better expelled than repeatedly tutored, Suzune faced criticism from Kushida and Ayanokouji; she later apologized and resumed tutoring them. 104 105 110
Failed Backup-Exam Plan
After learning that the first-year midterm papers had been leaked, Suzune secretly reported the leak to the Student Council and submitted a replacement examination of her own. She believed the school would adopt her paper, allowing Class D to pass while denying rival classes their expected advantage. 112 121 124
The school did not use her replacement paper. Class D had studied only Suzune's version, lost the expected 100 Class Points, and risked expulsions. Her classmates accused her of deception, and Suzune reacted by accusing Hirata, Karuizawa, and Kushida of leaking her scheme. 128 139
The fallout led to her removal from Class D's leadership, with Karuizawa proposing Hirata as her replacement. Suzune became isolated within both Class D and the wider school, where students blamed her for the grade-wide consequences of the leaked exam. 129 130 137
Conflict with Manabu
Manabu condemned Suzune's exam plan as self-righteous opportunism and argued that she had harmed her class while trying to prove herself. He urged her to stop living in his shadow and stated that he would personally seek her expulsion so she could return to a normal life. Suzune refused, vowing to prove that she was as outstanding as he was. 139
Negotiation with Class A
Though no longer Class D's leader, Suzune later volunteered to negotiate with Class A leader Mazumi Mami over his conditions for assisting Class D. Mami rejected her appeal and increased the demand to five favors per student; Suzune was forcibly escorted out by Chisato Nishikigi. 154 156
Appearance
Suzune has long black hair and dark eyes. She carries herself with a straight posture and keeps her uniform exceptionally neat, including a perfectly tied collar bow. 84 108 154
- Maintains an orderly, immaculate presentation even during late-night study sessions. 108 112
- Has a strong aversion to mess and discarded items; she cleaned up abandoned stockings at the dormitory scrap area despite her disgust. 139
- Her composed expression often conceals frustration, shown through clenched fists, white knuckles, or a tense jaw. 102 115
Personality
Suzune is ambitious, self-assured, and intensely competitive. She considers academic excellence central to personal worth and initially views friendships as distractions unless the other person can help her improve. She openly regards people she considers inferior as unworthy companions. 59 85
Her desire to equal Manabu drives much of her behavior. Rather than seeking to surpass him, Suzune repeatedly frames her goal as proving that she can stand beside him as an equal. 122 139
Suzune is disciplined and willing to work harder than those around her, but her poor interpersonal judgment undermines her leadership. She often treats classmates as problems to be managed, misjudges their emotions, and becomes defensive when challenged. 101 105 112 128
Despite this rigidity, she can recognize errors in her conduct. After driving Sudou and the others away from tutoring, she apologized and returned to personally supporting their preparation. 110
Abilities & Skills
Academic Ability
Suzune is academically exceptional and reportedly solved nearly all questions on the entrance examination. Sae Chabashira acknowledges her individual excellence while criticizing her inability to apply it collaboratively. 84 85
- Compiles review packets, incorrect-answer collections, and targeted worksheets for classmates. 102 110
- Uses diagnostic tests to identify individual weak areas before tutoring. 103
- Maintains a highly demanding personal study routine. 108 112
- Limitation: Her academic skill does not automatically translate into effective teaching; her impatience and insults initially drove students away. 104 105
Organization and Work Ethic
Suzune can rapidly impose structure on an uncooperative group when given authority. Within a week, she established study groups, daily sessions, supervision through the class group chat, and personalized materials. 101 102
- Persists through resistance and public criticism rather than abandoning her plans. 101 114
- Personally accepts tutoring responsibilities when challenged to do so by Karuizawa. 102
- Sets clear schedules and passing-focused workloads for students such as Sudou. 110
Strategic Planning
Suzune is willing to take high-risk measures to secure an advantage for Class D. Her plan to report the leaked exam and submit a replacement paper was intended to deny rival classes the benefits of the leak while earning Class Points for her own class. 112 121 124
- Anticipates competitive incentives and seeks opportunities for major Class Point gains. 85 112
- Prepared a full replacement midterm examination herself. 113 121
- Limitation: She treated the Student Council's acceptance of her submission as a guarantee that it would be used. The miscalculation caused Class D's midterm crisis. 124 128 139
