Ch. 21Li Family Village
Chapter summary
- Shen Hui meets Senior Sister Jingming at the mountain gate and tells her he plans to investigate the Wolf Demon’s attacks, then use himself as bait to draw it out. Jingming questions the danger but agrees to help, revealing that she can use an aura-sighting art to track the demon.
- They arrive at snowbound Li Family Village, where fear of the beast has emptied the streets and left homes shut up tight. A damaged house and a gathering crowd show that life in the village has been badly disrupted.
- The villagers recognize the pair as Daoists from Clear Wind Temple and eagerly plead for help. The elder recounts several deaths and describes the social and financial fallout: the demon’s notoriety has led another village to cancel his grandson’s marriage and keep the betrothal gifts.
- The elder’s dramatic lament turns into a comic public quarrel with Lai Zitou, who mocks his grandson as an idiot and accuses him of various gross misdeeds. Shen Hui struggles to restore order, while Jingming stays detached and leaves him to manage the crowd.
- Once the villagers quiet down, Shen Hui asks about the demon. No one present has seen it clearly; witnesses say it is taller than a man when standing and can shove rocks aside with its forepaws. It is said to occupy a ridge trail where travelers meet disaster.
Character developments and interactions
- Shen Hui shows practical courage in proposing himself as bait, but he also relies on Jingming’s expertise to make the plan safer. His patience and humor are tested by the villagers’ disorder; he steps between the elder and Lai Zitou and redirects them toward the danger.
- Jingming remains reserved and composed. She challenges Shen Hui’s plan, then offers useful tracking skills, but makes clear that handling the villagers is his responsibility.
- The village elder and Lai Zitou provide comic relief through their escalating insults. Their feud exposes village gossip and bitterness beneath the community’s shared fear.
Significant themes
- Courage balanced by cooperation: Shen Hui is willing to take risks, while Jingming’s skill makes his approach more deliberate.
- Fear’s wider consequences: The demon threatens not only lives but also livelihoods, marriage prospects, and the village’s reputation.
- Comedy amid hardship: The villagers’ quarrels and absurd accusations contrast with the serious danger they face.
