At first, the Nether King's subordinates still harbored some fear toward Yan Chihuo's men. The shadow Yan Chihuo had left behind was simply too great. But when they later saw that these ghost troops could only defend themselves, utterly unable to strike back, and that Yan Chihuo had yet to show himself, their courage swelled and they redoubled their assault. Yan Chihuo's subordinates were thus placed in even greater peril.
Gu Ling's situation was equally precarious. Alone, he held off three mid-Dao Integration Stage ghosts. Had the Heaven's End King not bestowed upon him an ancient shield, he would have long since been slain by them. Even so, he stood on the brink of death. He wanted to flee, but was powerless to do so.
Of these three mid-Dao Integration Stage ghosts, one was a Flying Yaksha, one a yin ghost, and one a Zombie. These three ghostly beings of the mid-Dao Integration Stage seemed to have fought together many times before, their coordination exceptionally practiced. Though they could not immediately kill Gu Ling, they hemmed him into a patch of ground that was not particularly spacious.
Gu Ling grew secretly anxious, knowing that if this continued, the enemy would wear him to death, while who knew when reinforcements would arrive. Having made up his mind, he gave a great shout. The bone shield flew out and transformed into a huge bird, bearing some resemblance to a Double-Eyed Bird. It opened its mouth and spat a beam of black light toward the Zombie.
The Zombie spewed corpse flames from its mouth. The instant they met the black light, they were immediately extinguished. The black light continued unabated and struck the Zombie's body.
