Ch. 101Kill Me
Chapter Summary: “Kill Me”
Plot and events
Davidson, hiding underground in a state of Zetsu with all his Aura Nodes sealed by the Restriction of his ability, is confronted by a mysterious visitor. Although completely defenseless, Davidson remains calm because he has already accepted the possibility of death. The visitor introduces himself as Defo, a member of the legendary Qinglin Squad, a Hunter group that disappeared after internal ideological conflicts.
Defo reveals that he previously attended Davidson’s signing event and is carrying a “seed” of the Swamp Man ability. Using his Nen Beast’s power and the seed as a trigger, he located Davidson beneath the swamp. He realizes that Davidson cannot sense or control the people being transformed by Swamp Man, despite having created the ability himself.
Defo praises Davidson’s decision to hold the signing event in Shivadani City, home of the Hunter Association, recognizing it as a deliberate test and an effective way to ensure the ability’s spread. Davidson confirms that he expects Swamp Man to continue transforming the world until everything becomes phantoms.
Defo then summons more than a dozen black-robed followers and torches, illuminating the underground chamber. He tells them, “Kill me.” One of the followers immediately shoots him in the back of the head, apparently killing him and leaving Davidson stunned.
Character developments
- Davidson demonstrates extraordinary composure, showing that he has fully embraced death and remains committed to Swamp Man’s worldwide spread. His conversation also confirms his lack of control over the ability’s transformed victims due to his Restriction.
- Defo is revealed to be a devoted reader and active participant in Swamp Man’s spread. He is intelligent, perceptive, and fascinated by Davidson’s destructive ideology. His apparent willingness to have himself killed suggests that he possesses a larger plan or an unusual relationship with death and Nen.
- The Qinglin Squad is reintroduced as a powerful, historically significant group connected to the Hunter Association, implying that its surviving members may now be involved in the Swamp Man crisis.
Significant themes
- Acceptance of death: Davidson’s lack of fear contrasts with the shocking violence of Defo’s apparent execution.
- Destruction and fanaticism: Davidson seeks not control but total annihilation, while Defo’s admiration suggests the emergence of followers willing to support or exploit that goal.
- Loss of control: Davidson created Swamp Man but cannot sense or manipulate its victims, emphasizing the danger of an ability that has outgrown its creator.
- Hidden identities and manipulation: Defo’s knowledge, his Nen Beast, and the coordinated presence of the robed figures suggest that the meeting is carefully staged.
Character interactions
Davidson and Defo engage in a tense but unusually candid conversation. Defo tests Davidson’s composure and interprets his answers to understand the nature of Swamp Man. Davidson, unable to sense Defo’s aura or determine whether the ability has affected him, can only speculate. Their mutual recognition of Swamp Man’s purpose creates a strange sense of kinship before Defo abruptly orders his own apparent death, ending the encounter on a cliffhanger.
