Background / History

Yuan Danqiu studies the Dao alongside Li Bai and Meng Haoran around Lumen Mountain. The three gather herbs, attempt ascetic practices, and live freely at the mountain’s foot; their attempt to “eat wind and drink dew” once merely left them seriously ill 14 25.

During a rainstorm at a mountain shrine, he meets Jiang She with Li Bai and Meng Haoran. Noticing that Jiang’s clothes remain dry, Yuan suspects he possesses divine arts and may be a Daoist master, but tactfully redirects Li Bai’s intrusive questioning 2.

At the Lu family’s birthday gathering, Yuan and Meng Haoran attend in Li Bai’s absence. Yuan becomes disgusted when Scholar Lu’s supposed immortal master is revealed to have drained the family’s wealth, publicly challenging the man and producing his Supreme Purity Dharma Register 6 7. Although the swindler’s flame trick briefly astonishes him, Yuan continues to doubt that any true immortal would behave as the man does 9.

Yuan is among the nineteen people drawn into the Ancient Locust Kingdom dream. Within it, he becomes Minister of Agriculture, longs to abandon officialdom, and ultimately dies defending an isolated city during an invasion. After awakening from the seven-day dream, he is shaken by the remembered death and declares that he will never become an official again 14 16.

He is fiercely opposed to Daoist charlatans. The exploitation of the Lu family angers him enough to confront the false immortal master in public, though he is willing to ask for proof rather than condemn claims without examining them 7 8.

His curiosity about cultivation remains intense. He eagerly pursues alchemical formulas, invites Jiang She to Pure Void Temple, and is deeply fascinated by the animated paper donkey, even while too embarrassed to ask Jiang directly how the art works 30 42. Ancient Locust Kingdom Dream

Yuan becomes one of the dreamers who experience decades of life in the ant kingdom. His dream career as Minister of Agriculture ends with his death in war, leaving him profoundly disillusioned with official life after he awakens 14 16.

Pure Void Temple and Alchemy

Driven by his interest in alchemy, Yuan acquires ingredients and brings Jiang She to Pure Void Temple’s ritual assembly. He and Meng Haoran later witness Jiang’s successful pill refinement, which overwhelms the temple’s Daoists and confirms the gulf between Yuan’s own experiments and Jiang’s methods 30 34 35.

Journey from Xiangyang

Yuan joins Jiang She, Li Bai, and the Old Deer Mountain God on their northwestern journey toward Luoyang. He drives a carriage, shares rooms with Li Bai at the haunted post station, and remains present during the confrontation with Zhou Ling at the Fourth Young Master Temple 40 43 49 50.
