Background

A native of Xiangyang, Meng Haoran's family had known the local Lu clan for generations. He withdrew to Lumen Mountain, where he became close with the traveling Li Bai; Yuan Danqiu later formed part of their shared circle of friends devoted to seeking the Dao. 3 5 14

He chose not to pursue the imperial examinations. Though Li Bai believed he could excel, Meng regarded the limited positions, need for connections, and prospect of minor officialdom as inferior to his present freedom. 2

Personality

Meng Haoran is carefree and values an unrestrained life, but he is more practical and socially attentive than Li Bai or Yuan Danqiu. At the Lu family matriarch's birthday, he brings gold and silver gifts on Li Bai's behalf and openly laments the decline of the family estate. 2 6

His experience in the Ancient Locust Kingdom reveals an unfulfilled desire for recognition: in the dream, he becomes Right Chancellor and experiences the prestige of official life. Awakening after forty dream-years leaves him contemplative rather than eager to pursue that life in reality. 13 16 19

Meeting Jiang She

Meng Haoran meets Jiang She at a mountain shrine during heavy rain alongside Li Bai and Yuan Danqiu. He notices that Jiang's clothes remain dry and suspects that their new acquaintance is no ordinary man. 1 2

After Li Bai departs with Jiang to seek immortals, Meng Haoran resolves to ask Li Bai about the mysterious traveler when he returns. 2

The Lu Family Incident

At the Lu family's birthday gathering, Meng Haoran brings an additional gift in Li Bai's absence and observes the household's worsening financial state. 6

When the supposed immortal master demands wealth from Scholar Lu, Meng Haoran privately advises Yuan Danqiu to demand proof of the man's abilities. He and Yuan later witness Li Bai and Jiang She reveal themselves after concealing their presence throughout the courtyard. 8 9 10

Ancient Locust Kingdom Dream

Jiang She draws Meng Haoran and the other guests into the Ancient Locust Kingdom. Within the dream, Meng becomes Right Chancellor and lives through forty years of wealth, status, and official life. 13 16 19

After awakening, he asks Jiang She whether the kingdom was real and receives confirmation that it truly exists. He later recounts the experience publicly, declaring that he has personally witnessed the way of immortals. 16 19

Pure Void Temple and Jiang She's Departure

Meng Haoran accompanies Yuan Danqiu and Jiang She to Pure Void Temple, where he witnesses Jiang's extraordinary pill refinement from outside the alchemy chamber. 30 34

He is not informed when Jiang She, Li Bai, Yuan Danqiu, and the Old Deer Mountain God leave Xiangyang. Upon learning afterward that they have departed for Luoyang, he regrets missing the chance to travel with them. 40 46
