Ma Tianxing had already left to support the other groups of employees fighting the monsters when Guo Qichang swung himself onto the Bovine-type Monster.
After all the directors had successfully broken free from their one-on-one battles, the pressure on the other employee groups eased as well.
Although the employee groups were gradually gaining the upper hand, they still lacked training and experience fighting in coordination. They had managed to weaken the monsters, but their cautious fighting style meant they had little to show for it. They had only managed to protect themselves and hold back the monsters' advance. If they fought for three or four hours, they might be able to wear the monsters down, but that was unlikely.
Once the directors joined in, the employee groups began to make more progress. In just half an hour, they had killed every monster that had entered the compound.
Looking at the final results, everyone felt a wave of relief and thought the crisis was finally over. Although quite a few people had been injured, no one had died. It was an excellent victory.
But in the confusion, everyone had forgotten the wolf howl they had heard earlier.
Just as everyone thought it was all over, a giant wolf with dark red fur charged in through the breach. It pounced on an employee slumped on the ground and sank its teeth into his head.
Like a watermelon bursting open, bright red blood sprayed across the other employees nearby.
Everyone froze at the sight.
But as one wolf after another appeared and lunged at them, panic seized the crowd.
By the time they came to their senses, six wolves had already made it inside, and nearly ten more were waiting by the breach in the wall.
Four people inside the wall had already been killed because they were caught completely off guard. Only two had managed to grab weapons at hand and wedge them into the wolves' mouths, holding them back with all their strength.
More than twenty people in the frightened crowd had also fled in panic.
But how could people outrun wolves? The moment they started running, they inevitably drew the wolves' attention.
As predators, the wolves would never let their prey escape.
Especially when the prey had its back turned, running in a panic, so slowly and so carelessly.
Just as everyone came to their senses and raised their weapons, forming combat units once more to divide the pack and surround it, seven people among the fleeing crowd had already lost their lives.
After noticing the others' movements, the giant wolves stopped chasing the fleeing crowd. They advanced slowly, their eyes constantly studying everyone's reactions as they stayed on guard.
Blood seeped from the wolves' mouths. In the moonlight and the glow of the fire in the distance, they looked especially terrifying.
Their slightly red eyes swept over the people surrounding them, and everyone's heart seemed to tremble with each wolf's gaze.
While the two sides remained at a standoff, the directors, who had already spent most of their strength, recovered a little. They waited for the pack to make its move.
The longer they could drag things out, the greater the advantage for everyone from Xingyan Group.
But the wolves weren't about to let them rest for long.
After nearly ten minutes of stalemate, a wolf somewhat smaller and leaner than the others pounced straight at the person nearest to it. The other wolves moved at the same time.
How could the other members of that combat unit stand by and let the giant wolves attack one of their own? They all raised their weapons and charged at the wolves.
However, after witnessing their colleagues' deaths, many people's fighting spirit had been shaken, and their attacks against the monsters were inevitably weaker. This also caused their combat units to make all sorts of mistakes that would not normally have happened. Casualties were unavoidable.
The directors of Xingyan Group also joined the other combat units. With the directors fighting with all their might, the wolves fell one after another. At last, the battle was over.
Gao Zheng caught his breath, then straightened up at once and shouted, "Everyone, move the cement, bricks, and rebar right away. Patch up the wall as quickly as you can. Directors, come over here first."
No one would ignore the order now. If the monsters in the mountains found the breach again, they would face another deadly battle. The outcome of these two battles had already made one thing clear: Xingyan Group could put up a fight, but they still weren't used to this environment.
Not everyone could face death without batting an eye, and not everyone could stride forward in the face of fear.
To prevent the monsters from attacking them again, reinforcing their defenses was the most urgent task.
Once Gao Zheng saw that the directors who had arrived were all gathered, he looked toward the breach and said, "We're probably the most capable people in the whole group. This breach is the most dangerous spot, and the place the monsters are most likely to find. So for now, we'll have to rely on ourselves to guard it."
Lin Chenxing looked pale. All he could do was pant and force a stiff smile as he said, "I have no objections. What Brother Gao said really is the best option right now. But I saw a few others do pretty well earlier. How about we ask them to join us?"
He Qishun's lips curled up as he said, "We've practiced martial arts for so many years. If we don't step up now, how can we earn people's respect? What will our employees think of us? There's no need to discuss this any further. Let's go."
Ma Tianxing chimed in, "As the saying goes, 'Heaven moves with vigor, and the superior man strives tirelessly to strengthen himself.' I certainly won't back down over such a small difficulty."
Guo Qichang merely nodded slightly and said nothing more.
Seeing that everyone was in agreement, Gao Zheng said, "Then the five of us will go guard the breach from the outside."
Then he turned to Li Yueqi, who had come along, and said, "Go around to the different groups and see if any of the people who performed well are willing to come guard the breach with us."
With that, he and the other directors strode toward the breach.
A few monsters still wandered across the open ground between the forest and the base, keeping their distance.
In the forest, one monster after another still emerged from the shadows now and then.
Even deeper in, if you looked closely, you could make out pairs of red eyes glowing in the darkness. They stayed where they were, perfectly still.
As the people selected from the base came out one after another, stained with monster blood, each of them looked especially fierce, with an overwhelming presence.
The force of their presence merged into one, and even in the monsters' eyes, it was terrifying.
Just then, the sound of horns came from nearby. Numerous vehicles drew closer, their headlights illuminating the open ground.
The calm was broken, and so was the stalemate.
When one monster showed signs of retreating, all the monsters that had left the forest and wandered across the open ground quickly returned to the woods. The red-eyed monsters in the forest gradually abandoned their attempt to surround the base.
The beast horde's assault had finally come to an end.
