On the second day of the second month, the current Son of Heaven of Chu summoned the imperial kin and meritorious nobles for a spring hunt in Shanglin Park.
This was Chu Kingdom's most important event of the new year, comparable to the year-end ancestral rites.
The scions of the imperial clan flaunted their martial prowess; the meritorious nobles did not forget their military achievements.
Throughout the martial hunt, the Son of Heaven spoke not a word. Only after the ritual official beat the drums did he ride three circuits at a gallop and shoot down three ghost bears.
Fortune King Xiong Dingfu attended the ruler at his side. As he took stock of the prey, he asked the Son of Heaven whether they would next head west or north. West of Shanglin Park, they hunted ghosts; north of Shanglin Park, Ferocious Beasts. The Son of Heaven hunted springtime evils, drumming the year flat and bringing peace to the four quarters.
The Son of Heaven said, "It is time to return."
And so the spring hunt, which should have lasted seven days, was hastily brought to an end.
At the time, High Grandee Zhang Zheng did not understand the Son of Heaven's intent and asked his friend Li Henghua.
Li Henghua was one of the twelve newly established Pivot Officials of Zhanghua Terrace, renowned for his wisdom and knowledge.
Zhuge Zuo happened to pass by, so Li Henghua asked him to answer.
Twelve-year-old Zhuge Zuo said that Prince Xiong Zidu would return, sometime in the third month.
