There was no defensive barrier. No Chakra cloak. Naruto took the full-force impact of that white behemoth square in the chest, his body flying backward like a dead leaf swept up by a gale. His ribs shattered—not one or two, but his entire rib cage crackled and cracked. Blood sprayed from his mouth, tracing a dark red arc beneath the moonlight.
He flew over Kakashi's head, over Guy's head, over Killer B's massive Eight-Tails body. His body tumbled through the air like a bird with broken wings, completely out of control.
Then he struck the ground.
He did not land—he crashed. His back hit first, and the tremendous impact bounced his body off the ground before he continued rolling backward, plowing a trench over ten meters long. Crushed stones, dirt, and broken grass roots were all ground into his wounds. His face, hands, and clothes were covered in blood; it was impossible to tell which came from his wounds and which had been cut open by shattered rocks.
At last, he stopped.
He lay on his back in the trench he had made himself, his limbs sprawled weakly, his half-open eyes staring at the sky overhead, stained in every color by Tailed Beast Chakra. His chest had completely caved in. Every breath came with a wheezing rasp from his throat, like a broken bellows. Blood had flooded his lungs. He coughed twice, and more red spilled from the corners of his mouth.
It hurt.
The pain was not sharp, nor was it burning. It was something more frightening: a numbness slowly robbing his entire body of sensation. It began at his fingertips and spread into his palms, passed through his wrists and forearms, slowly and irreversibly consuming him upward. He knew what
