Background / History
Origins
The Quincy originated from Yhwach, who distributed fragments of his soul through his blood to repair others' deficiencies and grant them power. Those fragments became hereditary, allowing Quincy power to pass down through successive generations and leaving Yhwach able to influence his descendants 190.
Unlike Shinigami and Hollows, Quincy are humans whose bodies are not made of spirit particles. Their power lies in their bloodline and allows them to gather, disperse, and shape external Reishi into weapons 34.
A millennium ago, Yhwach ruled the Quincy Empire of Light in the Western World before leading it in an invasion of the Soul Society. Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni defeated him, while surviving Quincy carried away Yhwach's body and went into hiding 182 216.
Conflict with the Soul Society
A later Quincy population in the Human World hunted Hollows so thoroughly that the Hollows' souls were annihilated rather than sent through reincarnation. Central 46 deemed this a threat to the balance of souls and ordered the Gotei 13 to exterminate the Quincy 34 262.
The campaign became a prolonged conflict rather than a simple purge. Quincy resisted or fled, while the Gotei 13 required time and 12th Division support to locate scattered survivors 35 37. The war eventually ended through the Soul King's intervention; surviving Quincy accepted Soul Society surveillance and agreed to assist against Hollows 39.
The Wandenreich's Survival
Unknown to the Soul Society, surviving Wandenreich Quincy had built a Reishi Space within the shadows of the Seireitei. Haschwalth and Lille Barro led this hidden faction while Yhwach remained dormant, observing the Gotei 13 and researching countermeasures to Shinigami Bankai 159.
The Reishi Space was exposed and destroyed by a combined operation involving the King's Seal, a Kidō Cannon, and the Gotei 13's Space Transfer Kidō 165. Surviving Quincy fled to the Western World, where Haschwalth secured a position in Reverse London and helped rebuild the empire under the name Wandenreich 216.
Bloodlines and Factions
- Pure-Blood Quincy — Possess stronger Quincy power and are capable of advanced techniques such as Blut. Their numbers are limited because Quincy families traditionally preserve bloodlines through intermarriage 34 256.
- Mixed-Blood Quincy — More numerous than Pure-Blood Quincy and still capable of manipulating Reishi, though generally less powerful 34.
- Wandenreich — Yhwach's militant empire, composed of ordinary Quincy and the elite Sternritter. Its members prepared for war in secrecy and seek vengeance against the Soul Society 159 267.
- Ishida Family — A Pure-Blood family distinct from Yhwach's followers. Following the extermination campaign, it voluntarily accepted Soul Society surveillance and participated in cooperative experiments 176 254.
Abilities & Skills
Reishi Gathering
Quincy's core ability is the manipulation of ambient Reishi. They gather spirit particles directly from their environment and shape them into weapons or use them to interfere with opponents' techniques 34 265.
- Can form bows, arrows, firearms, defensive constructs, and other weapon shapes from Reishi 34 254.
- Disrupts Shinigami Shunpo by disturbing the surrounding spirit particles the technique requires 34 35.
- Can interfere with Kidō and other Reishi-dependent attacks 35 124.
- Depends on external Reishi; low-Reishi environments such as the Human World limit Hirenkyaku's speed 35.
- Does not allow ordinary Quincy to directly manipulate the Reishi within a Shinigami's body 37.
Heilig Pfeil
Heilig Pfeil are Reishi projectiles and the Quincy's principal long-range weapon.
- Usually fired from a spirit bow, though some Quincy manifest firearms that discharge Reishi bullets instead 254.
- Can be fired in dense barrages and re-formed from scattered Reishi 36.
- Completely annihilate Hollows and their souls on death, preventing reincarnation or passage into Hell 34 262.
Hirenkyaku
Hirenkyaku is the Quincy high-speed movement technique, performed by manipulating Reishi beneath the user's feet.
- Can exceed Shunpo where Reishi is sufficiently dense 35.
- Is more dependent on ambient spirit particles than Shunpo and is correspondingly limited in the Human World 35.
- Can be disrupted when another power seizes or destabilizes the surrounding Reishi 36.
Blut
Blut is a Pure-Blood Quincy technique that injects Reishi into the circulatory system.
- Blut Arterie enhances strength and attack power 256.
- Blut Vene reinforces defense 256.
- A Quincy must choose between arterial and venous use; Reishi cannot freely circulate through both systems at once 256.
Ransōtengai
Ransōtengai uses Reishi threads to move a damaged body like a puppet.
- Allows critically injured or elderly Quincy to continue fighting despite impaired limbs or bodily damage 36.
- Cannot compensate for fatal damage to vital areas such as the head or heart 37.
Schrift
A Schrift is a unique power unlocked through Yhwach's Soul-Blood Wine.
- Each Schrift is exclusive to its bearer 265.
- Only exceptional Quincy can awaken one, making Sternritter the elite of the race 255.
- Examples include Cang Du's “Iron,” which grants extraordinary physical defense, and Haschwalth's “The Balance,” which redistributes fortune and misfortune 255 259.
Vollständig
Vollständig is the Wandenreich's ultimate transformation, developed after the older Quincy final forms recorded by Soul Society.
- Vastly increases speed, power, and the effectiveness of a Sternritter's Schrift 254 255.
- Repairs injuries by forcing surrounding Reishi into submission and absorbing it into the user 268.
- Can be neutralized if the Reishi sustaining it is removed or seized 256.
Yhwach's Soul Authority
Yhwach's power is the foundation of the Quincy race, but the authority belongs to him rather than to ordinary Quincy.
- Can distribute soul fragments and power to create or empower Quincy 190 269.
- Can reclaim the souls and powers of fallen Quincy, allowing him to resurrect valuable subordinates in new bodies 253.
- Can perform Auswählen to devour Quincy souls and power for his own restoration 204 258.
- This cycle can be obstructed if a fallen Quincy's soul is suppressed or annihilated before it returns to Yhwach 257 258.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Quincy Cross — A small personal item that transforms into the user's spirit weapon when Quincy power is channeled through it 265.
- Spirit Bow / Reishi Firearm — Weapon forms used to fire Heilig Pfeil; weapon shapes vary by individual 254.
- Sanrei Glove — A dangerous glove that temporarily forces a Quincy into a final form and grants overwhelming Reishi control at the cost of their power afterward 36.
- Medallion — A Wandenreich device designed to mimic a Shinigami's Reiatsu Wave and steal Bankai. Its attempts against Byakuya and Renji fail during the Hueco Mundo clash 254 255 257.
Relationships
- Yhwach — Quincy progenitor and emperor; his soul fragments are inherited through Quincy bloodlines, and he reclaims fallen Quincy's souls and power 190 253.
- Haschwalth — Yhwach's advisor and former leader of the Wandenreich Sternritter during Yhwach's slumber; he organized the hidden Reishi Space and later rebuilt the Wandenreich in the West 159 216.
- Sternritter — The Wandenreich's elite Quincy, distinguished by their Schriften and access to Vollständig 255 265.
- Ishida Family — A dissident Pure-Blood Quincy lineage that advocates coexistence with Shinigami and cooperates with Soul Society 176 204.
- Soul Society / Gotei 13 — Historic enemies whose conflicts with the Quincy stem from Yhwach's ancient invasion, the later extermination campaign, and the Wandenreich's revenge 182 265.
- Hollows — Natural enemies whose destruction by Quincy permanently erases their souls, destabilizing the cycle of reincarnation 34 280.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Human World Quincy War — The Gotei 13 acts on Central 46's extermination order after Quincy Hollow-hunting disrupts soul balance. Quincy Reishi manipulation causes heavy Shinigami casualties before the conflict ends under the Soul King's terms 34 39.
- Wandenreich Discovery — Natsuki, Urahara, and Azashiro uncover the Reishi Space concealed in Seireitei's shadows. The Gotei 13 exposes and destroys it with the Kidō Cannon, forcing the surviving Quincy from the East 159 165.
- Eastern Expedition — With Yhwach restored, the Wandenreich advances into Hueco Mundo as preparation for renewed war. Robert Accutrone and Cang Du lead an initial assault against the 6th Division 253 254.
- Prelude to War — The Wandenreich relocates its hidden base to the Dangai, using obliterated souls to refine Reishi and construct a new world where time grants them years of preparation 263.
- Thousand-Year Blood War — Yhwach invades the Seireitei, destroys the Shakonmaku barrier, and sends Quincy forces—including the Sternritter—against the Gotei 13 264 265.
- Royal Palace Invasion — Haschwalth extracts Karakura Town's spirit veins to breach the 72-Layer Barrier, allowing Yhwach and the Schutzstaffel to enter the Soul King Palace 272 273.
- Collapse of the Three Worlds — Yhwach kills the Soul King, causing the Three Worlds to destabilize and begin converging toward destruction 280.
Trivia
- Quincy weaponry is not limited to bows; Robert Accutrone manifests a white handgun that fires Reishi bullets 254.
- The Quincy's permanent destruction of Hollow souls is presented as the fundamental reason their existence conflicts with the Shinigami-maintained cycle of reincarnation 262 280.
- The Wandenreich spent eight hundred years hidden from the Soul Society before the destruction of its Reishi Space exposed its survival 267.
