Background / History

Yhwach was the progenitor and emperor of the Quincy, ruling their ancient Empire of Light when the Shinigami were not yet unified. Rather than coexist with Soul Society, he led the Quincy in a crusade that devastated Soul Society but ended with the Empire of Light’s annihilation and his defeat by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto 182.

Before that conflict, Ichibe Hyosube used the Soul King’s Left Arm to seal part of Yhwach’s power, including his ability to see the future. Yamamoto defeated him, but did not destroy his corpse; surviving Quincy recovered it and carried their ruler away 159 166 182.

Before entering a deep slumber, Yhwach appointed the young Jugram Haschwalth to lead the Wandenreich Sternritter in his absence. The survivors built a hidden Reishi Space within the shadows of the Seireitei, later retreating to the Western World after that sanctuary was destroyed 159 216 259.

Yhwach’s revival followed a prophecy: he would regain his heartbeat after nine hundred years, consciousness after ninety more, power after nine, and conquer the world in nine days. Although the destruction of the Reishi Space accelerated his recovery by returning Quincy souls and power to him, he deliberately followed the future he had foreseen rather than awaken early 216.

Appearance

Yhwach is a middle-aged man with long flowing hair, a thick mustache, and black robes 260.

  • Has an otherwise ordinary appearance, despite the immense pressure emitted by his Reiatsu 264.
  • His post-Soul King form is pitch-black and covered in narrow slits resembling innumerable eyes 291.
  • Wields a Quincy Cross that can become a black longsword 261.

Personality

Yhwach presents himself as an emperor whose commands are absolute. He treats most Quincy as resources rather than people, measuring their worth by whether their souls and powers can benefit him 253 279.

He is immensely arrogant, asserting that those beneath him cannot comprehend his level of existence. His confidence stems from The Almighty and his belief that he is destined to replace the Soul King as ruler of the world 251 273 279.

Despite his ruthlessness, Haschwalth is a notable exception. Yhwach regards him as his “other half,” personally intervenes to reclaim his soul, and resurrects him after his death 260 261 262.

Abilities & Skills

The Almighty

Yhwach’s Schrift, designated “A”, grants him insight into futures and the ability to alter them.

  • Perceives and rewrites future events, allowing him to evade attacks and negate outcomes unfavorable to himself 273 278.
  • Lets him overcome Ichibe Hyosube’s attempts to halve his power, rename him “Black Ant,” and entomb him in a graveyard of darkness 278 279.
  • Can be hindered by futures outside his sight, particularly those involving Natsuki 251 261.
  • Is ultimately suppressed by Ishida Uryu’s Still Silver Arrow 295 296.
  • Haschwalth can temporarily wield The Almighty during Yhwach’s sleep, though he cannot process its vast flow of possible futures as effectively 260 281 294.

Soul Bestowal and Reclamation

Yhwach can distribute fragments of his soul, bloodline, and power to Quincy, then reclaim them along with the recipients’ souls.

  • Quincy powers and Schriften originate from Yhwach’s Soul Blood 240 255.
  • Can reclaim the souls and powers of deceased Quincy, using them to increase his own strength 253 258.
  • Can recreate a physical body for a Quincy if their soul and power return to him 253.
  • Revived Haschwalth by sacrificing Quincy he considered expendable 261 262.
  • Can bestow power upon himself to repair physical losses, including restoring his voice after Ichibe crushed his throat 277.

Auswählen

Auswählen is Yhwach’s large-scale harvesting of Quincy life and power.

  • Previously killed Mixed-Blood Quincy worldwide to reclaim his power; Ishida Uryu was the sole recorded survivor 239 262.
  • Reclaimed the souls of Quincy across the Seireitei during the final Auswählen, killing them before redistributing power to chosen subordinates 279.
  • Cannot reliably seize the souls of individuals whose composition is too complex, such as Ichigo 292 294.
  • Natsuki’s Bankai prevents his premature Auswählen from affecting Quincy outside the Soul King Palace 291.

Reishi Manipulation

Unlike ordinary Quincy, Yhwach possesses Sklaverei from the outset and can perfectly command surrounding Reishi.

  • Forms Heilig Pfeil of varying scale, including massive arrows and a Great Holy Bow 264 270 271.
  • Creates blue flames by igniting highly condensed Reishi, devastating the Seireitei and dividing the battlefield 265 270.
  • Uses Hirenkyaku for high-speed movement and aerial positioning 264 271.
  • Forms weapons, barriers, and a throne through Reishi manipulation 261 291.
  • Can absorb Ichigo’s Quincy power, though not Ichigo’s entire soul 294.

Sankt Altar

Sankt Altar is Yhwach’s powerful offensive and defensive barrier technique.

  • Creates a protective enclosure that also assails anyone trapped inside it with dense Heilig Pfeil barrages 270.
  • Protects Yhwach while he retrieves Haschwalth’s soul from Natsuki’s Hell-forged chains 261.
  • Can be broken by Yamamoto’s combined Zanka no Tachi, North: Kyokujin and West: Zanjitsu Gokui 271.
  • May be used to seize powers that are not inherently Quincy by exploiting Yhwach’s connection to the Soul King and the world 278.

Blut Vene Anhaben

Yhwach employs an externalized Blut Vene defense.

  • Generates a defensive wall around his body capable of breaking binding spells and resisting attacks 277.
  • Its physical contact is described as corrosive 277.
  • Was severed by Ichibe using the Soul King’s Left Arm 278.

Soul King Power

After reaching the Soul King Palace, Yhwach kills and devours the Soul King.

  • Becomes a temporary Wedge stabilizing the Three Worlds after their balance begins to collapse 280 281.
  • Seeks to fully assimilate this power, shed the role of Wedge, and create a new world 281 291.
  • Uses Soul King-derived power against Natsuki, though Natsuki’s corresponding power can match it 292.
  • Loses control of stolen power when the Soul King’s will manifests and rejects him 295 296.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Quincy Cross — Transforms into Yhwach’s black longsword 261.
  • Sankt Altar — An altar-like manifestation used for defense, offense, and power seizure 270 278.
  • Great Holy Bow — Used to fire a massive arrow that destroys the Shakone Maku around the Seireitei 264.
  • Medallion — Used during his attempt to activate Sankt Altar against Ichibe 278.

Relationships

  • Jugram Haschwalth — His adjutant, Grandmaster of the Wandenreich Sternritter, and “other half.” Haschwalth’s The Balance helps Yhwach assimilate stolen power; Yhwach resurrects him after Natsuki kills him 260 261 262 281.
  • Soul King — Yhwach’s father. Yhwach seeks to inherit his throne, kills him, and devours his power to become a temporary Wedge 251 280 281.
  • Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto — The only opponent to defeat Yhwach a millennium earlier. Their renewed battle ends with Yamamoto severely wounded, though Yhwach is unable to immediately kill him 159 182 270 271.
  • Ichibe Hyosube — The Royal Guard leader who originally sealed part of Yhwach’s power. Yhwach later defeats and kills him after awakening The Almighty 159 278 279.
  • Ishida Uryu — A Mixed-Blood Quincy Yhwach wishes to recruit because of Antithesis and his survival of Auswählen. Uryu instead opposes him and uses Still Silver to suppress The Almighty 262 293 295.
  • Natsuki — A Shinigami whose actions initially fall outside Yhwach’s future sight. Natsuki identifies Yhwach’s soul as his weakness and repeatedly interferes with The Almighty 261 292 294.
  • Kurosaki Ichigo — A descendant with Quincy blood whom Yhwach attempts to strip of Quincy power. Ichigo ultimately bisects Yhwach after Still Silver and the Soul King’s will create an opening 294 295.
  • Schutzstaffel — His personal guard: Pernida Parnkgjas, Askin Nakk Le Vaar, Gerard Valkyrie, and Lille Barro. Their rank is second only to Haschwalth within the Wandenreich 273.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Return of the Quincy

Yhwach’s possible survival is discovered after the destruction of the Wandenreich’s hidden Reishi Space. His coming return prompts Yamamoto, Natsuki, and Urahara Kisuke to prepare Soul Society for a new Quincy war 182 237 241.

His future sight becomes chaotic as Natsuki’s existence disrupts the timeline Yhwach expected to follow 251 252.

Eastern Expedition

Yhwach resumes the Quincy war after a thousand years, ordering the conquest of Hueco Mundo before the assault on Soul Society. He treats fallen Quincy as recoverable assets but considers their resurrection worthwhile only when they retain value 253.

After Natsuki annihilates the souls of Robert and Cang Du, Yhwach realizes that denying him returned souls can weaken him. He orders Haschwalth to investigate and renews his interest in Ishida Uryu 258 262.

First Appearance in the Human World

Yhwach personally arrives after Haschwalth is killed and his soul is bound by Hell’s chains. He battles Natsuki, retrieves Haschwalth’s soul, and recognizes that Natsuki is beyond The Almighty’s sight 260 261.

He resurrects Haschwalth by sacrificing other Quincy and begins considering Uryu as a possible replacement or additional aide 261 262.

Invasion of Soul Society

Yhwach leads the Wandenreich through a Garganta, destroys the Shakone Maku with the Great Holy Bow, and turns the Seireitei into a battlefield with Reishi-fueled blue flames 264 265.

He duels Yamamoto, surviving Zanka no Tachi and destroying Yamamoto’s right arm, leaving the Head Captain’s Bankai temporarily unusable 270 271.

Assault on the Soul King Palace

Yhwach uses Karakura Town’s spirit veins to breach the 72-Layer Barrier and enter the Soul King Palace with Haschwalth and the Schutzstaffel 272.

There, he reveals the full scope of The Almighty, bypasses Shutara Senjumaru and Tenjirō Kirinji, and defeats Ichibe Hyosube after reclaiming his true power 273 278 279.

Destruction of the Old Order

Yhwach activates the final Auswählen, sacrifices Quincy subordinates to reclaim their strength, and resurrects select Schutzstaffel members 279.

He kills and devours the Soul King, causing the Three Worlds to tremble and begin converging toward destruction. By becoming a temporary Wedge, he stabilizes them long enough to complete his intended transformation 280 281.

Final Battle

After awakening prematurely, Yhwach confronts Natsuki and his allies in the Soul King Palace’s main hall. He counters Yoruichi and Urahara, absorbs Ichigo’s Quincy power, and relies on The Almighty to resist attempts to change his fate 292 294.

Ishida Uryu strikes him with Still Silver, suppressing The Almighty. Natsuki manifests the Soul King’s will, which rejects Yhwach and strips power from his body; Ichigo then bisects him with Bankai 295 296.
