Background / History
Yang Chong is an aging martial artist who founded and maintains the Five Animals Academy in Wuxi County's Outer City. Though he did not become exceptionally wealthy, he established the academy's reputation and a stable foothold among the area's smaller martial schools. In his youth, he followed the army; later, old injuries and declining blood-qi began to affect him. 36 39
He has no children and views the academy's succession as a personal concern. His closing disciple, Cao Chuan, had been expected to support him in old age, but Cao Chuan's crippling injuries in the Inner City competition left Yang Chong worried that neither the academy nor his legacy would endure. 34 36
After Li Yuan rapidly reached the Stone Skin Realm, Yang Chong accepted him as his sixth personal disciple. He privately assessed Li Yuan as talented, steady-tempered, loyal to those close to him, and a possible successor worth investing in. 34 35 39 Cao Chuan's eventual recovery restored Yang Chong's hopes and caused him to divide his attention among his disciples again. 46
Appearance
Yang Chong is an elderly yet powerfully built man whose appearance contrasts age with retained martial vigor. 10
- White hair and beard. 10
- Sturdy, robust frame. 10
- Massive palms capable of examining a disciple's skeletal frame and constitution. 11
- His movements remain fast enough to appear blurred in combat despite his age and old injuries. 36
Personality
Yang Chong is stern, practical, and direct about the cost of martial cultivation. When Li Yuan sought instruction at eighteen, Yang Chong openly warned that his muscles and bones had already begun to set, meaning he would need to endure greater hardship and spend more on food and medicine than younger students. 11
Despite his severity, he teaches sincerely and does not withhold the methods he considers necessary. He supervises disciples' fundamentals, explains the risks of failed breakthroughs, corrects their use of blood-qi, and supplies promising personal disciples with cultivation resources. 11 16 35 39
His concern for the academy is deeply personal. Cao Chuan's injury leaves him exhausted and distressed, while the recovery of his disciple's foundation brings him unmistakable joy. 36 46
Abilities & Skills
Five Animals Fist
Yang Chong is the inheritor and instructor of the Five Animals Play lineage, which uses the forms of the tiger, deer, bear, ape, and bird to temper the body and circulate blood-qi. 11 16
- Demonstrates each animal form and explains its intended specialization: Tiger for killing, Deer for speed, Bear for body conditioning, Ape for agility, and Bird for qi cultivation. 11
- Emphasizes that practitioners should specialize rather than divide their limited energy among all five forms. 11 16
- States that even after most of his life practicing, he has not brought all five forms to perfection. 16
- His Tiger Form demonstration includes Tiger Roars in the Mountain Forest, Vicious Tiger Pounces on Prey, Tiger Tail Kick, Black Tiger Digs for Heart, and Angry Tiger Pierces the Forest. 16
Martial Instruction and Cultivation Theory
Yang Chong teaches martial arts as the integration of physical form, blood-qi, intent, and spirit rather than rote movement alone. 16 35 39
- Assesses a student's constitution through direct examination of their shoulders, spine, waist, abdomen, and legs. 11
- Teaches the progression of the Skin Refining Realm: Ox Skin, Stone Skin, and Iron Skin. 16
- Explains that advancement failures damage the body and can reduce the likelihood of future success. 11
- Teaches that Iron Skin requires the integration of three fist techniques cultivated to Great Completion. 35
- Corrects Li Yuan's fixation on mechanical force generation, instructing him to follow the natural circulation of blood-qi and unite form with spirit. 39
Combat Prowess
Yang Chong remains a formidable fighter despite the instability in his blood-qi caused by age and prior injuries. 36
- Defeats Liu Meng—an Iron Skin Realm martial artist—in fewer than three moves. 36
- Uses precise counters, including a wrist strike and a close-range shoulder strike, to neutralize Liu Meng's attacks. 36
- Can disrupt Li Yuan's blood-qi with a quick strike that Li Yuan fails to clearly perceive. 39
- Teaches combat through sparring, stressing that opponents exploit flaws during transitions between techniques. 39 40
Teaching Materials and Resources

- Cao Chuan — Closing disciple and Yang Chong's foremost hope for the academy's future. Cao Chuan's severe injury deeply affects Yang Chong, while his recovery restores Yang Chong's confidence. 33 34 36 46
