First Appearance Chapter 1 (historical reference to the Demon King's subjugation) 1

History

The Demon Race waged a thousand-year racial war against humanity under the Demon King. Sixty years before the Hero's death, the Demon King Army had pushed human society to the brink of annihilation under Schlacht's command. Though Schlacht foresaw the Demon King's death, the Demon King regarded his own demise as the foundation of the race's eventual glory and ordered the war to continue. 8

Before the extermination of the elves, the Demon King targeted the dwarves. After the dwarves rejected his attempt to recruit them, demon spies infiltrated their largest tribe and fomented internal conflict. The resulting division enabled the Demon Race to destroy the dwarven Steel Civilization within less than a century, leaving Ironforge buried beneath the Neck Mountains. 38 41

During Ironforge's fall, the Dwarf King released the sealed Dark Dragon against the invading demons. The dragon annihilated many demonic beasts and demons, though the Demon Race's mist-shrouded leader fought it directly while the young Rivalei attempted to protect him. 48

Nearly seventy years before the present era, the Demon King was subjugated by Himmel's party. Demons nevertheless remain active, including powerful survivors such as Solitar, Rivalei, and Grausam. 1 31 44

Characteristics

  • Demons can disguise themselves as humans, making infiltration of populated areas a serious security risk. Gostan City's City Hall employs magic specifically capable of identifying them. 31
  • They consume humans; attacks on merchant caravans in the Neck Mountains left blood-covered carriages but no bodies or stolen cargo. 42 43
  • Their speech can be manipulative rather than trustworthy. Shane explicitly treats Solitar's conversation as a tactic intended to deceive or exploit opponents. 32
  • Frieren considers demons incapable of being tamed, taught, or accepted as companions. 49
  • Demon physical forms vary considerably. Solitar appears as a young girl, while Rivalei is a horned, heavily built warrior. 32 43

Abilities & Traits

Flight Magic

Flight Magic was originally unique to the Demon Race before humans learned to use it. A demon who chooses to flee is exceptionally difficult for human mages to pursue through flight alone. 32 33

  • Solitar uses Flight Magic to escape Gostan City after her operation is interrupted. 33
  • The Demon Race was historically capable of reaching the back of the Sky Vein Dragon before humans mastered Flight Magic. 40

Mana Concealment

Demons generally display their mana proudly, making deliberate concealment unusual and suspicious. 43

  • Rivalei's mana could not be detected by Frieren despite his presence near the Dwarf Steel Ruins. 43
  • The lack of a detectable demonic aura helped Frieren rule out the entity controlling Lamir's townspeople as a demon. 11

Demonic Magic and Combat

Individual demons possess highly specialized magic and combat styles.

  • Solitar — Creates magical greatswords, evades or deflects Frieren's spells, and manipulates opponents into damaging barriers for her. 32 33
  • Schlacht — Wields Future Prediction magic and foresaw several pivotal futures involving the Demon King, the Hero of the South, and Shane. 8 44
  • Qual — Created Piercing Magic; its analysis later contributed to the development of modern Basic Attack Magic. 33
  • Rivalei — A demon general and the race's strongest warrior, whose combat strength is comparable to Ize's. 43

Notable Members

  • Demon King — Ruler of the Demon King Army; accepted his foretold death as the price of the Demon Race's future. 8
  • Schlacht the Omniscient — Demon strategist with Future Prediction magic; led the Seven Sages of Destruction against humanity. 8
  • Aura the Guillotine — One of the Seven Sages of Destruction; uses the Scales of Obedience to turn defeated opponents into puppets. 11
  • Qual, the Corrupt Sage — A premier demon mage and creator of Piercing Magic; sealed by the Hero Party more than seventy years ago. 33 35
  • Solitar — A cunning Great Demon who raided Gostan City to access the Inverted Land and obtain something connected to Qual. 32 33
  • Rivalei, the Bloody War God — A demon general and warrior who sought the Dwarf Steel Ruins; defeated by Shane and Frieren. 43 45
  • Grausam — A hooded, silent demon working with Solitar and Rivalei to intercept a valuable object foreseen by Schlacht. 44
  • Dark Dragon — A demonic dragon imprisoned beneath Ironforge by the dwarves; destroyed by Frieren after Shane and Frieren escaped its lair. 48 49

Major Incidents

Raid on Gostan City

Demons infiltrated Gostan City in human disguise and caused explosions across three districts to scatter the guards. Their actual target was the sealed Inverted Land in the northeast, where Solitar attempted to use Frieren's attacks to break the barrier. 31 32

Solitar escaped after Frieren struck her with Demon-Slaying Magic, but her actions revealed that something connected to Qual within the labyrinth was important to the Demon Race. 33

Search for the Dwarf Steel Ruins

Solitar, Rivalei, and Grausam later divided their search between ruins in Gostan City and the Neck Mountains. Their mission was to seize an item whose acquisition had been foreseen by Schlacht as a source of future conflict among demons. 44

Rivalei pursued the Neck Mountains site, ambushed Shane and Frieren at Blackstone Mountain, and was killed after Shane afflicted him with weakening gray traits while Frieren restrained and defended against him. His death triggered the opening of Ironforge. 43 45 46
