Xiao Yan had just stepped out of the main hall when hurried footsteps sounded behind him.
Nalan Yanran chased after him and blocked his path.
"Xiao Yan, stop right there!"
Xiao Yan halted and looked at Nalan Yanran.
"Anything else?"
"Do you think you can just get away with killing the Fourth Elder?" Nalan Yanran said coldly. "The Misty Cloud Sect will not let you go."
Xiao Yan did not speak.
"Your strength is indeed formidable; I admit I underestimated you," Nalan Yanran said. "But so what? You killed an elder of the Misty Cloud Sect. The sect will surely retaliate, and then you will know what regret feels like."
Xiao Yan looked at Nalan Yanran and said indifferently, "Are you done?"
Nalan Yanran was stunned for a moment.
"If you're done, get lost."
Nalan Yanran was furious. "You!"
Slap.
A crisp, clear sound rang out.
Xiao Yan slapped Nalan Yanran across the face.
Nalan Yanran was completely dazed; she clutched her face, looking at Xiao Yan in disbelief.
"You... you hit me?"
"With a mouth that foul, who else would I hit?" Xiao Yan said calmly.
Nalan Yanran trembled with rage. Her face burned with pain, but her heart hurt even more.
Nalan Yanran was the personal disciple of the Misty Cloud Sect leader and a standout among the younger generation of the Jia Ma Empire, yet in front of Xiao Yan, she didn't even have the chance to fight back.
Divorced, slapped, and humiliated by Xiao Yan time and time again.
"Xiao Yan, just you wait," Nalan Yanran gritted her teeth. "The Misty Cloud Sect will not let you off."
Xiao Yan ignored her and turned to leave.
Nalan Yanran stood where she was, watching his retreating back, stamping her feet in anger.
She hated Xiao Yan to the bone, but for now, there was nothing she could do about him.
Nalan Yanran gritted her teeth and turned to walk in the opposite direction.
She had to return to the Misty Cloud Sect. She had to tell her teacher that Xiao Yan had killed the Fourth Elder, and she would make the sect seek justice for her.
Two days later, at the Misty Cloud Sect.
In the main hall, Yun Yun sat upon the sect leader's throne.
Several elders stood on either side, discussing something.
Yun Leng stood at the very front, his expression grim.
"Sect Leader, the Fourth Elder has been at the Xiao Clan for two days now. Why is there still no news?" Yun Leng asked.
Yun Yun frowned slightly. "Wait a little longer."
"Could something have gone wrong?" the Second Elder asked.
"What could possibly go wrong?" the Third Elder said. "The Fourth Elder is a Dou King. What could a tiny Xiao Clan possibly do to him?"
"The Third Elder is right," the Fifth Elder added. "The Xiao Clan is just a small family. Once the Fourth Elder arrived, wouldn't they have handed the person over obediently?"
Yun Leng nodded. "He should be back soon."
Footsteps echoed from outside the hall.
Nalan Yanran walked in. Her face was pale, and she looked visibly exhausted.
Two days of travel had left her looking quite disheveled.
Seeing her, Yun Yun spoke up, "Yanran, you've returned."
Nalan Yanran walked to the center of the hall and knelt on the ground.
"Teacher."
Yun Yun looked at her condition, and her brows furrowed.
"What happened? Where is Xiao Yan? Where is the Fourth Elder?"
Nalan Yanran looked up, her eyes rimmed with red.
"Teacher, the Fourth Elder... he is dead."
The hall fell into an instant, deathly silence.
Yun Yun's expression shifted, and the elders were stunned into stillness.
"What did you say?" Yun Leng was the first to react. "The Fourth Elder is dead?"
"Yes," Nalan Yanran said.
"How did he die?" Yun Leng asked urgently.
"He was killed by Xiao Yan," Nalan Yanran said.
As soon as these words were spoken, the great hall erupted in chaos.
"Impossible," the Second Elder said. "The Fourth Elder is a Dou King expert. How could a piece of trash like Xiao Yan possibly kill him?"
"The Second Elder is right," the Third Elder said. "Yanran, did you see wrong?"
"I did not see wrong," Nalan Yanran said. "The Fourth Elder was indeed killed by Xiao Yan; I saw it with my own eyes."
The expressions of the several elders shifted.
Shock flashed through Yun Leng's eyes.
"A piece of trash with only three stages of Dou Disciple energy killed the Fourth Elder?" Yun Leng said. "That is impossible."
"Great Elder, Xiao Yan is not trash," Nalan Yanran said. "Xiao Yan's strength is very formidable."
"How formidable?" Yun Leng asked.
"I do not know," Nalan Yanran said. "I only know that the Fourth Elder did not even have a chance to fight back before Xiao Yan. One move—the Fourth Elder could not even withstand a single move."
The great hall fell silent once again.
The elders looked at one another, their eyes filled with shock.
The Fourth Elder was a Dou King expert. To defeat him in one move at the Dou King level would require at least a Dou Emperor level of strength. A fifteen-year-old Dou Emperor? How could this be possible?
"Yanran, are you certain you didn't see wrong?" Yun Yun spoke up.
"Teacher, this disciple is certain," Nalan Yanran said. "This disciple saw it with her own eyes. The Fourth Elder struck first and was sent flying by a single palm from Xiao Yan. Unconvinced, the Fourth Elder launched a sneak attack from behind, only to be killed on the spot by Xiao Yan's backhanded strike."
Yun Yun fell silent.
A stormy sea surged within Yun Yun's heart. A fifteen-year-old youth capable of killing a Dou King expert—such talent could not be found anywhere else on the entire Dou Qi Continent.
"Sect Leader, this matter cannot be left as it is," Yun Leng said angrily. "The Fourth Elder has been killed; our Misty Cloud Sect must demand an explanation."
"The Great Elder is right," the Second Elder said. "Xiao Yan killed the Fourth Elder, which means he does not hold our Misty Cloud Sect in his eyes."
"Wipe out the Xiao Clan," the Third Elder said. "Avenge the Fourth Elder."
"Correct, wipe out the Xiao Clan," the Fifth Elder added. "A mere tiny Xiao Clan dares to touch someone from our Misty Cloud Sect?"
The elders clamored one after another, demanding revenge and the destruction of the Xiao Clan.
Yun Yun raised her hand, signaling for the elders to be quiet.
"Enough."
The elders quieted down, looking toward Yun Yun.
"Sect Leader, you don't intend to let the Xiao Clan off, do you?" Yun Leng asked.
"I did not say I would let the Xiao Clan off," Yun Yun said. "But this matter cannot be acted upon rashly."
"Why?" Yun Leng said with dissatisfaction. "The Fourth Elder has been killed, and we are still expected to endure it?"
"Great Elder, calm yourself," Yun Yun said. "That Xiao Yan was able to kill the Fourth Elder, which suggests his strength is very likely at the late Dou King or even Dou Emperor level. Do you know what a fifteen-year-old Dou Emperor signifies?"
The elders fell silent.
"It signifies that Xiao Yan must have a major power behind him providing training," Yun Yun said. "We cannot easily offend such a person."
"Sect Leader, aren't you overthinking this?" Yun Leng said. "The Xiao Clan is merely a small family; what kind of major power could they possibly have?"
"The Xiao Clan may not, but that does not mean Xiao Yan does not," Yun Yun said. "How could Xiao Yan reach the Dou Emperor level at fifteen without a power backing him?"
Yun Leng opened his mouth, but he could not find the words to respond.
"Investigate this matter thoroughly first," Yun Yun said. "Until it is clarified, no one is to act rashly."
Although the elders were dissatisfied in their hearts, the Sect Leader had spoken, and they dared not disobey.
Yun Leng gritted his teeth, but he remained silent.
Nalan Yanran knelt on the ground, her heart filled with resentment.
Nalan Yanran had expected that upon returning to the Misty Cloud Sect, her teacher would immediately stand up for her and send people to wipe out the Xiao Clan, yet her teacher had actually said not to act rashly.
"Teacher," Nalan Yanran spoke up.
"Is there something else?" Yun Yun asked.
"Is the Fourth Elder to have died in vain?" Nalan Yanran said.
"I did not say he died in vain," Yun Yun said. "But this matter cannot be rushed."
Nalan Yanran was unhappy, but she dared not say anything more.
"You may all withdraw," Yun Yun said.
The elders exchanged glances before turning to leave.
Nalan Yanran stood up and followed them out.
As she walked out of the great hall, Nalan Yanran looked back, her heart filled with unwillingness.
Xiao Yan, just you wait. One day, I will make you pay the price.
