Chen Wu formally took office as acting young commander of the One Heart Society and used his new authority to study the students whose loyalty had been questioned. He proposed testing everyone at Wude Palace with copies of the People's Daily, then began writing treasonous statements in the young commander's office with You Dongyun and Li Zhixin advising him.

Chen Wu and the One Heart Society planted a rebel essay signed “Wind Sound” around Wude Palace and used students’ reactions to compile a register for the Duke Chu. The Duke Chu praised Chen Wu’s work, summoned him, and greeted him with an accusation of plotting rebellion.

  • Chen Wu wrote a rebel essay about perpetual tenancy in Lu Xun’s style, signed it “Wind Sound,” and helped distribute it throughout Wude Palace.
  • Yang Fang and Davout brought Chen Wu a copy of the essay, revealing that they had bet on whether it was another One Heart Society scheme.
  • Zhang Jiansheng delivered the Duke Chu a register recording students’ reactions, and the Duke Chu was troubled that more than twenty percent had received ratings below grade B.
  • The Duke Chu praised the One Heart Society’s work and asked to meet its acting chairman, Chen Wu.
  • Chen Wu visited the Duke Chu, who looked him over and accused him of daring to plot rebellion.
