The Cheating Monster

"You mentioned that many of the people living here in the sewers have gone missing?" Luo Xia asked.

"Yes, as far as I know, about five people have disappeared," Skye replied.

Daisy added with a sneer, "They were all just scum—robbers, rapists, and drug dealers."

Luo Xia felt a strong urge to retort that a thief like her wasn't exactly much nobler than them. However, he reconsidered; there was no point in bickering with a poor girl living in a sewer and crushing the little self-esteem she had left.

The loud thud-thud-thud grew closer. According to the intel from the camera, the monster seemed to be charging straight toward Luo Xia's position.

Luo Xia drew his pistol from his waist, a movement that startled the two girls.

"Don't be nervous. Stay here and behave; no matter what you hear, do not come out," Luo Xia instructed.

After cautioning the girls, Luo Xia slowly walked out of their den and headed toward the source of the thundering noise. Once he was out of the girls' line of sight, he pulled on his Sensor Gloves and immediately modified the Colt in his hand into a Pulse Pistol.

Facing an unknown monster, he felt much more at ease using the advanced technology of the AllSpark.

The Tactical Goggles provided Luo Xia with perfect night vision and various distance data for the surrounding space, so when the monster appeared before him, Luo Xia was not the least bit surprised.

Because even before the monster emerged from the corner, Luo Xia had already spotted it using his X-ray vision.

It was a monster that looked like a giant lizard, though it was wearing a white coat, making it look rather absurd.

The moment the monster poked its head out, Luo Xia pulled the trigger of his Pulse Pistol without hesitation.

Luo Xia wasn't in the habit of chatting about life with non-human monsters or digging into their inner humanity; that was the job of a professor who played with cheats. After all, that guy could freeze his opponents and use his powers to read their minds.

Luo Xia couldn't learn that, nor did he intend to imitate it. In his previous life, he was best at blowing people's heads off with a gun. Although he was facing a giant lizard this time, its head was even larger and easier to aim at.

The muzzle of the Pulse Pistol spat out a series of pale blue energy bolts, hitting the giant lizard's head perfectly.

However, this time, the lizard monster flicked its legs and actually leaped onto the ceiling of the sewer. Its sharp claws dug directly into the concrete, and its entire body crawled along the top as it charged at Luo Xia.

This was not a wise decision. The fully recharged Pulse Pistol opened fire again, riddling the sewer ceiling with craters.

As a result, the monster grabbed onto the cracked wall, only to pull off a handful of debris, and then plop—it fell right down.

"That's why I never understood what use it is for monsters in movies to climb walls; they aren't even as fast as running on the ground," Luo Xia remarked while continuing to spray fire at the creature.

The dense sound of explosions made the entire sewer hum, and the dust and stone powder filled the nearby space.

After emptying the magazine again, the Tactical Goggles showed that the monster was lying on the ground, seemingly lifeless. But Luo Xia had no intention of stopping; he continued to recharge and fire at the monster's "corpse." Looking at Luo Xia, he didn't plan to stop until he had beaten the monster into a pulp or even vaporized it entirely.

Luo Xia was a transmigrator, after all. Countless predecessors had fallen to the "playing dead and counter-attacking" trick, so how could he possibly make such a mistake?

Besides, this place was all reinforced concrete; it could probably withstand a nuclear bomb, so the explosive effect of the Pulse Pistol wouldn't collapse the place.

Three magazines of pulse energy rounds should have turned even a tank into scrap metal, yet this monster could still run this fast?

Luo Xia was about to give chase when he noticed the two girls had run out to watch the commotion.

"Didn't I tell you not to come out?" Luo Xia said to them.

"We... what was that just now?" Skye changed the subject.

"Nothing, just a rather large gecko," Luo Xia explained.

Skye and Daisy looked at the sewer, which looked like it had been baptized by rocket fire, and thought to themselves that only a fool would believe him.

"Alright, it's not safe here. I suggest you leave as soon as possible," Luo Xia warned, then took off in the direction where the lizard-man had disappeared.

Such a dangerous monster had to be rooted out; otherwise, if he were walking down the street and this thing suddenly jumped out of a manhole cover, he couldn't guarantee he would be able to react in time.

Fortunately, the monster had been severely wounded by Luo Xia's barrage, and its red-and-green blood was splattered everywhere, making it easy for Luo Xia to track.

He followed the trail of blood for two or three hundred meters, making several turns through the complex sewer system, before the surrounding environment changed.

The foul odor of the sewer became even more pungent. If the section where Skye and Daisy lived had been abandoned and unused for a long time, this section was still very much in operation.
