Background / History

Xu Changqing grew up in Little Stockade Village in poverty. Before learning martial arts, he often lacked food and worked for every household in the village; his lack of training made him a target of contempt within the village guard 608. During a mission to rescue a girl affected by a Soul-Binding Demon, he was assigned to the rearguard while the stronger members entered a cave 611.

After awakening outside the cave, Xu discovered that his squad and village companions—including Li Shitou—had been massacred. At this point, Sulu entered his mind, called himself “Old Grandpa,” and offered guidance in exchange for a future favor when Xu became capable of repaying it 611. Xu accepted Sulu’s aid while remaining wary of his new host’s motives.

Sulu revealed that the disaster originated with an injured corpse-liberated immortal using nearby girls as nourishment to recover 612. Xu later learned that this immortal was True Person Shuangxuan, who had been wounded fighting Xiangliu’s Son and had devastated Little Stockade Village while healing himself 630. This knowledge became the foundation of Xu’s pursuit of vengeance.

Appearance

Xu Changqing was a fifteen- or sixteen-year-old youth when he confronted Zhou Quan as a newly advanced Spirit Refinement martial artist 621. He originally wore his hair in a cropped style after Li Shitou cut it short, but later appeared as a black-haired, black-eyed outsider in Yor Barony 615 736.

• His Dharma Eye manifests as a vertical eye on his forehead; unstable use can cause additional eyes to emerge across his body 625 631.

Personality

Xu initially appears timid and self-deprecating, having been treated as expendable by his own squad. Faced with the deaths of his friends and village, however, he develops resolve quickly and repeatedly risks his life rather than abandon Little Stockade Village 611 620.

He is fiercely protective of those he considers his people. He remained in the village, assumed responsibility as guard captain, aided Li Shitou’s transformation into a Ghost Constable, and later made Li Shitou swear to protect their village in every lifetime 615 618 720.

His desire for revenge makes him increasingly pragmatic and ruthless. Xu killed Zhou Quan despite his official status, kept the dangerous jade-green heart for cultivation, and destroyed evidence after killing the chief examiner rather than invite retaliation against his village 621 634 725. After finally defeating Shuangxuan, he felt empty rather than fulfilled, then redirected himself toward cultivation, exploration, and assisting Sulu 732.

Demon Suppression Bureau and Xiangliu

As an eighth-rank deputy officer, Xu investigates supernatural cases around Green Sun City. He helps defeat the corrupted willow cultivator, secretly claims the jade-green heart, and joins the operation against Xiangliu’s Son at Long Sun Mountain 629 633 635. After Linfeng curses his arm in the Xingtian ruins, Xu amputates it and chooses the Feathered Immortal transcendence ritual to pursue his enemies beyond the mortal world 639.
