After all, most of the highly-upvoted answers below were clearly stories made up on the fly; the vampires within were either wealthy, handsome scions of noble families or melancholic, soulful long-time wanderers—essentially, nothing more than romance novels.

The few answers that earnestly traced the origins of vampire legends or offered potential medical explanations were buried at the bottom with very few likes, as it was clear that most people didn't feel this question required a serious approach.

The person who originally posted the question had likely only asked it in a mocking tone.
