On the last day of August, the outdoor temperature had already reached 38°C by noon.
Zhongshan Hospital in Yangcheng City was as busy as ever, with cars coming and going and crowds flowing through its doors.
However, the hospital's old main medical building was undergoing renovations, and construction was not allowed that day, so there was basically no one around.
Two hospital staff members pushed a cart into the main building and took the elevator directly down to the basement.
Inside the elevator, the taller staff member glanced at the cloth-covered bulge on the cart and asked doubtfully, "Shouldn't bodies normally be sent to the funeral home?"
That was right. There was a corpse on the cart they were pushing.
Although the main building was being renovated, many of its facilities had actually been moved to the new building long ago. Others, which were inconvenient or too costly to replace, had simply been replaced with new ones.
However, some "facilities" did not exist in the new building.

Under current regulations, bodies were generally sent straight to funeral homes, so the new building had not been equipped with a morgue. Only the old main building still had one, and for certain special reasons, it had remained operational even during the renovation.
