The island nation had a concept of hell, too. Otherwise, how would the temples that sold burial plots make a living? Didn't they rely on chanting sutras to guide the dead to the afterlife and Buddhahood? Then it wasn't hard to understand what the so-called Underworld was: the place souls went after death.
