"Kyle, are you sure about this?"
Once Qiu had left, Cedric, who had been standing by the entire time, leaned in and whispered, "I mean, will the Ravenclaw first-years really pay for a map?"
"Who knows?" Kyle shrugged. "Might as well try; it's not like we have anything better to do."
Despite saying that, Kyle didn't think there would be any issues.
Hogwarts had no road signs, and first-years had to find their own way to every classroom or ask upperclassmen for directions, making getting lost a daily occurrence.
In such moments, a map could save them a great deal of time.
Besides, it was only ten Sickles—less than a single Galleon—which was truly a bargain.
A Muggle-born student, after buying their textbooks and other necessities, usually had about six Galleons of pocket money left. It was hard to imagine many would refuse to part with ten Sickles for a map that marked the shifting patterns of most staircases.
Of course, there were exceptions, such as a certain red-headed first-year who preferred to remain anonymous next year.
"Oh, right, this is for you."
On the way back to the dormitory, Kyle tossed the map in his hand to Cedric. "The supply task is yours from now on."
Cedric looked puzzled. "I have a part in this?"
"Don't be daft. You gave me the original, so of course you get a cut. Qiu takes half, and the remaining half is split between the two of us."
Kyle said it as if it were only natural. "Besides, I'm a new student and my Duplication Charm isn't exactly refined yet. I can't go selling people defective goods; I'd get chewed out for it.
So, you're the best person for this job. After all, you wouldn't want people calling us Hufflepuffs profiteers, would you?"
"Well... alright then." Cedric thought about it, realized the logic held up, and said nothing more.
"Good, it's settled. I'll have Qiu go find you directly. See you in the Great Hall this afternoon." Kyle gave Cedric a meaningful look before turning and walking into his dormitory.
Cedric stood rooted to the spot. He watched Kyle's retreating back, and the more he thought about it, the more something felt off.
Qiu was in charge of promotion, he was in charge of providing the maps... what about Kyle?
Aside from those two things, it seemed there was nothing left to do.
And that comment Kyle made earlier about "not having anything better to do"—he couldn't have been referring to him, could he?
Cedric fell into deep thought...
On the other side, Kyle returned to his dorm and enjoyed a lovely nap, arriving at the door of the Transfiguration Class right on time for the afternoon session.
To protect his own reputation and that of Hufflepuff, and to ensure the scene he'd seen with Qiu didn't repeat itself, he had specifically dragged Ryan along.
Even though the other boy had insisted repeatedly that he wouldn't get lost again now that he had a map.
This Transfiguration Class was shared with Ravenclaw, and since they had arrived early, only a few students were scattered around the room.
Kyle didn't even need to look; he knew with his eyes closed that they certainly weren't Hufflepuffs.
Furthermore, perched on the desk at the very front was a beautiful tabby cat.
Kyle instinctively reached into his robe pocket and felt the bag of dried fish he had prepared well in advance.
Feeding Professor McGonagall dried fish was an achievement he had long wanted to unlock, and he had even prepared the snacks ahead of time for this very purpose.
It was just like moving the trash cans in Diagon Alley; while there was no reward, the feeling was incredibly satisfying, and it gave him an inexplicable sense of accomplishment.
However, trash cans could be moved at any time, but the chance to feed Professor McGonagall only came once.
Professor McGonagall would only reveal her Animagus form during the first Transfiguration lesson for first-years. Only at this moment could Kyle hide behind his status as a clueless newcomer and get away with it later.
After all, he was just an ignorant little wizard; how could he possibly have known that Professor McGonagall could turn into a cat?
As for carrying the dried fish... that was meant for Mrs. Norris, to thank her for helping him find the hospital wing yesterday.
Everything was perfect; he was just waiting for the final piece of the puzzle.
There were still too few people in the classroom, and if he went over now, it would be too obvious and easily spotted by Professor McGonagall. He had to wait a little longer.
To seize this one-time opportunity, Kyle was very patient. He let Ryan go into the classroom first while he found an excuse to linger by the door.
As it happened, Qiu appeared around the corner of the corridor just then and waved at him. "Kyle, I knew you'd be here."
Ryan didn't think much of it and, after telling him he'd save him a seat, headed into the classroom.
"Kyle, you wouldn't believe it, things went even smoother than I imagined." Qiu ran up to Kyle, breathless and happy. "I showed them the map I copied, and in just an hour, twelve first-years explicitly said they wanted to buy one."
Kyle wasn't surprised. He replied calmly, "Not bad. Thanks for your hard work."
"It's no trouble at all." Qiu looked Kyle up and down and continued, "Did you bring the maps? I promised them I'd bring the goods after class."
"Cedric has the maps—the second-year boy who was with me at noon."
Kyle said with a helpless shrug, "He was worried we couldn't guarantee the quality of the maps, so he took it upon himself to handle the duplicating. You can just go find him in the Great Hall after class.
Oh, and he's the top student in his year; he's very skilled with the Duplication Charm."
"Cedric?" Qiu thought for a moment and asked, "I remember you saying he was the one who gave you the map, too."
Kyle nodded. "That's right."
"Then he really is a good person," Qiu remarked. Then, as if something had occurred to her, she suddenly frowned. "In that case, I can't take half. It should be split equally between the three of us."
"If you insist, you can talk to him after class," Kyle said, spreading his hands. "I certainly don't have a problem with it, and I've already told him I wanted to split the remaining half, but Cedric refused to take it, insisting he only helped out a little."
"I can't convince him, anyway. Maybe you can try."
"Okay!" Qiu nodded earnestly.
In her view, as long as someone participated, they were part of the team and had to split the reward equally.
Kyle chuckled, "Then I wish you both the best of luck."
Qiu looked at Kyle's expression and frowned, "Why do I feel like your smile is a bit... strange?"
"Is it? Maybe I'm just looking forward to the upcoming Transfiguration Class," Kyle said, straightening his face. "Let's not talk about this anymore. We should head into the classroom; it would be a shame to be late."
