Dumbledore had appeared behind Kyle at some point. He said gently, "I'm very pleased that you were able to resist its temptation. Many adult wizards cannot do the same.
"People often waste away their days before it, becoming obsessed with what they see, even being driven mad by it."
"I just didn't want to create unnecessary worries for myself, Headmaster." Kyle turned around with a smile. "I'm quite satisfied with my life as it is."

Dumbledore walked past Kyle and came to the mirror, lightly stroking its golden frame. "I must admit that, in this regard, you have already surpassed this old man. Even I cannot help but come look at it from time to time."
"And what did you see when you looked into it?" Kyle asked at the right moment. "The true essence of magic? Or some even more profound theory?"
"You're flattering me enough to make me blush, Kyle."
"I may not be as great as you think. What I see is myself holding a pair of thick woolen socks."
"You can never have enough socks." Dumbledore winked. "Christmas comes and goes, yet I have never received a single pair. People insist on giving me books instead."
