The sun was rising, and the bright morning light shone over Hogwarts Castle, waking the students who were still sleeping in.

In the Headmaster's Office on the eighth floor, Kyle, who had not slept all night, set down his quill and sorted through the thick stack of parchment before him.

This was an account of his experiences over the past half month, from being forced to accept the task of impersonating Dumbledore at the start of term, to deciding to go to France, traveling to Beauxbatons, meeting Professor Viktor and speaking with him...

At Professor McGonagall's request, Kyle had spent the entire night repeatedly retracing his memories, recording the timing of those events as precisely as possible—to the hour... even the minute.

Naturally, there were bound to be mistakes. He could not possibly have checked the time before doing every single thing, but Kyle did not think that mattered much, so long as the key points lined up.

As he wrote, the former headmasters in the portraits had been watching from behind him. They had watched through the entire night as well... except they did not need sleep, and were in far better spirits than Kyle.

"Wait. Let me see the seventeenth sheet of parchment again."

Just as Kyle set down his quill, he suddenly heard a voice behind him.

It belonged to a witch dressed in a distinctly medieval fashion, someone Kyle did not recognize at all. He was certain he had never seen her before.

That was normal. There were quite a few portraits in the Headmaster's Office—more than thirty in total—but not every former headmaster, like Armando Dippet and Phineas Black, enjoyed spending long periods of time here...

About half of them usually stayed in portraits elsewhere, only coming here when something major happened at Hogwarts.
