Background and History
Early life and the Pact
Zhang Fusheng grew up in the impoverished Seventh District with little natural aptitude for cultivation. Before entering martial arts training, he supported himself by making balloon animals, sometimes deliberately giving children the wrong animal to maximize his earnings. Despite his circumstances, he was determined to become a Martial Artist. 1
His defining advantage is a mysterious Pact that permits the buying and selling of abilities, cultivation, lifespan, memories, identities, and other personal qualities. Fearing that his abrupt growth would attract attention, he purchased the identity of the terminally ill former Martial Artist Zhong Shan and separated his public personas: “ordinary Zhang Fusheng” and the mysterious “True Person” Zhong Shan. 14 15
Martial Arts Academy
At the Martial Arts Academy, Zhang rapidly mastered the Dense White Bone Contemplation, Spring Thunder Method, Lotus Flower Stance, and Tiger Roar Fist. His frightening rate of progress earned him recognition from Chen Yuque and eventually led Hong Tianbao to accept him as a disciple. 9 21 24
He began treating cultivation as both a path to power and a market. He searched for desperate trading partners, acquired cultivation time through transactions, and started constructing the Gaotian Association as a secretive organization whose existence could be inferred without exposing its true structure. 14 17 46
Jiangzhou and Chongyang
After curing victims of the Flesh and Blood Plague while disguised as Zhong Shan, Zhang left Jiangzhou to avoid the investigation that would follow the miraculous recoveries. The subsequent Jiangzhou disaster caused the Federation to classify him as deceased. 38 112
In Chongyang’s Waiting Area, he secured a new identity by protecting Liu Cuihua from bounty hunters. He became a Senior Inspector, later rose through the Public Security Bureau, and leveraged both official authority and personal strength to become acting Director and then Bureau Chief. 113 114 158 212
Divine identities and later journey
As his Spiritual Realm expanded, Zhang accumulated increasingly real mythical identities—Taiqing, the World-Honored One, the Heavenly Venerate of Sin Removal, and the Central Extreme Cult Master. He consciously distinguishes these manifestations from his human self, insisting that “Zhang Fusheng” remains primary. 203 267
He later gains the Human Ancestor status, cultivates the Fuli Dharma Body, refines a universe-scale realm, and moves toward the Capital under the alias Dao Venerate. Even at this level, he considers himself a chess piece within a larger struggle and seeks enough power to leave the board entirely. 268 322 329 342 346
Appearance
Zhang Fusheng is an eighteen-year-old youth whose ordinary appearance is deliberately misleading. He can alter his face, bones, and flesh with ease, allowing him to assume identities such as Zhong Shan and Zhang Boyang. 126 184
- Usually presents as a calm, youthful, unremarkable young man.
- Can reshape himself into a towering Sixteen-Foot True Body with horns and a Vajra-like physique. 177
- Uses the Giant Contemplation to enlarge his body for direct combat. 48 97
- The Fuli Dharma Body manifests at sixty feet tall with three heads and six arms. 250
- The Dead Man’s Bones transformation leaves him between life and death and enables interaction with Soul Spirits. 52 53
Personality
Zhang is calculating, adaptable, and highly transactional. He views identities, cultivation, favors, and organizational ties as resources to be exchanged or cultivated. Rather than trusting rapid strength alone, he repeatedly establishes aliases, political cover, organizations, and contingency plans. 14 39 114 126
He can be ruthless when threatened. He intimidates officials, absorbs enemies’ life force, and is willing to issue lethal warnings to former allies who interfere with his objectives. 53 87 158
Despite this ruthlessness, he is not indifferent to suffering. He risks exposure to cure plague victims, intervenes against human trafficking, worries over his parents and cousin, and is pained by mass civilian casualties. 38 109 161
His greatest internal concern is losing himself to his growing collection of divine identities. He consciously rejects being defined solely by Taiqing, Tathagata, Zhong Shan, or the Central Extreme Cult Master. 203 267
